Epic Comeback about to happen

  • 2006: MSU vs Northwestern on BTN now.
    Northwestern is winning 38-3.

Hide yo quarterbackz, hide yo kidz, the MSU defense is here

  • I still don't know how this was done.

38-10 with 3 mins left to go in the 3rd. Pure heart from Drew.

  • This game delayed John L's firing for a couple months

I truly believe he was gone the next day if we didn't come back to win

  • Such a weird season, 2006 was. I was @ Ryan Field that fateful day, I can tell you when we cut it to 38-17, it felt like we were within a field goal. It never seemed like we were that far off once we got in the end zone. The same can be said with the Notre Dame debacle. After the 3rd when we were up 19 or whatever it was, I was just hoping to hang on. Sigh........the John L era.

Oh, and thank f'ing God for Dantonio. The man is a saint.

  • This game shows what a warrior #5 was. I had forgotten that he injured his left shoulder in this game, was knocked out of the game but came back in to lead MSU to victory. Stanton just ran the ball in to pull MSU within 7 pts! Go Green!!

Wasn't he fired after the next game, but still finished the season?

Imagine Stanton playing with a talented team like MSU has now instead of a bunch of scrubs

  • This game also foreshadowed two players who each played their best season as a MSU Spartan in Coach D's 1st year...Jonal St. Dic and Devin Thomas. I don't think either of those guys had major roles on the 2006 team.

Was Thomas even on the 06 team?

I thought his only year was 07

Yep Thomas was on that team. He played special teams and blocked the punt that lead to a TD score during the epic comeback at Northwestern.

  • Im guessing this is still the record for ncaa? dumb question I know but im just wondering....I remember this day it was great because I finally had something to cheer about

Actually it only delayed John L's firing by one week.

Everyone was hoping that this game would "turn the season around". MSU was 4-4 with all winnable games left so they could still finish with 7 or 8 wins. However, we got blown out the next week by a bad Indiana team. JLS was fired on following Tuesday.

I remember after the game thinking how terrible the ESPN crew was for not knowing DURING the game what the record is for biggest comeback.

They kept saying "This must be one of the biggest comebacks in MSU history!" Uh..no. It was THE biggest comeback in college football history. You think that would've got mentioned during the game at least but no one found out til after.

    Was a douche.

    Dantonio moved him to CB.

    Got kicked off the team.

(Is that right? Or am I thinking of someone else?)

Here's an article that I found, doesn't say the end result, but still telling of his character.

Two Michigan State starters, one reserve face felony robbery charge - College Football - ESPN

Michigan State football players SirDarean Adams, T.J. Williams and Jeremy Ware have been charged with unarmed robbery at a store.

Moved to CB, got kicked off team, transferred to Valdosta State. Actually received an invite from the Jets to their rookie camp.

  • btw, how bad was the 2006 season? It took the biggest comeback in college football history to avoid going 0-8 in conference pukeface

  • I was tailgating for game one of the World Series that day. I just remember a drunk guy running down the street screaming "SPARTY WONNNNNN!!!!".

It was probably one of you guys on here haha

  • I was out doing a lit drop on the north side of East Lansing. I was listening on the radio completely disgusted as we were down 38-3. I completed my lit drop route, headed back to the campaign office in Delta Township, and went to work on something else at my desk (didn't even turn the game on) when someone said that MSU had made it 38-17, so we turned on the projector and put it on the big screen in the office. What a crazy game.

I was there too. A surprising number of Spartan fans stayed for the second half, despite all signs pointing to obvious doom.

I remember sarcastically yelling to Spartan fans in my section that "WE'VE GOT THEM RIGHT WHERE WE WANT THEM!" when we were way down. Then suddenly we started playing, they basically stopped playing and the comeback really started to seem possible. Ryan Field was rocking with Spartans during that 4th quarter.

The post game celebration was epic. I've got some great photos of celebrating with players in front of our section, and photos with Sparty from that day.

Especially because the biggest comeback at the time was Frank Reich and Maryland v. Miami...when Reich was on the Lions at the end of his career, that game and his record NFL comeback with the Bills over the Oilers was all we ever heard about...

  • I was at that game, sitting in the NU student section. I was with two of my MSU friends, my brother (NU alum), and his friends. When it was 38-3, one of my friends asked me and the other MSU guy if we should just leave. We stayed only because we didn't have anything better to do since my brother and his friends were staying.

As someone else said, as soon as we made it 38 - 17 it just felt like MSU was gonna come back. The same guy who wanted to leave even said "we're going to win." We ended up celebrating in front of a bunch of nerds, and almost picked up a couple of fights.

Great day, but what a fucking awful season.
