Ever get a hankering to move to Milwaukee?

  • As a displaced midwesterner stuck in the oppressive Texas heat, I often think that Milwaukee would be a great place to throw down some roots. Four distinct seasons, Big Ten country, taverns you can drink at called "Wolski's," and a good arts and sports scene. Not to mention it's a couple hours from Chicago and only 3.5 more to get to Lansing.

Any thoughts on Milwaukee? Any residents?

I like Milwaukee. It's the smallest "big city" where I have ever really spent any time. It's fairly nice.

  • Absolutely--MKE is my first-choice relocation spot for a host of reasons.

Medium-sized city in B10 country; on Lake Michigan; excellent property value and schools in the "first ring suburbs"; four seasons; and close enough to visit relatives via car but not so close they can just drop by whenever they like.

That's what I want to hear, and it sounds like we have nearly identical criteria for what makes a place livable.

  • Visit? Yes, great summers. Live? Hell no! Heard about this thing called winter? Theirs are brutal!

My family still lives there...mom, dad and a little sister. My buddies still hang out at the local diner; they're very close to the owners. When I was living there, we were friends with a renegade who had a heart of gold. Kind of a rough exterior but deep down he cared for his friends. Kind of a weird dude - always wore blue jeans and a leather jacket. He was the Evil Knievel of Milwaukee and once almost got eaten by a bunch of sharks while waterskiing. My older brother got kidnapped out of nowhere. One day he was there and by the next seas- ...day he was gone. Miss ya, Chuck.

Texas has great cities, but I don't care for the heat.

Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines are all very nice places to live.

    No need to hate, now.

Milwaukee gets like 5 inches less snow than Lansing.

  • You should move to North Korea.

  • I had an old friend who lived in Milwaukee, but he became something of a drifter. He grew into an alcoholic and got interested in cannibalism. Apparently they found body parts in his refrigerator and a corpse in a huge vat of acid. The crimes were so brutal the city even tore down his apartment building on 25th street. A few years later he was bludgeoned to death in jail.

    lol

Not the snow that's the issue in Milwaukee. It gets bitterly cold there, more so than Lansing.

    Lansing: Average High = 58, Average Low = 39
    Milwaukee: Average High = 56, Average Low = 40

  • Wrong side of the lake, in Bucky Badger country. Try Grand Rapids for a larger city that has what you are looking for. Beer City USA. MSU is only 1 hour away. great arts scene and so close to E. Lansing for sports, 3.5 hrs. to Chicago. Great sandy beaches you don't find on the Wisconsin side of the lake are 1/2 hr. away and tall, good looking, blonde Dutch girls. What more is there? No, really?

Agreed. Always enjoyed my time there. Seemed like a nice 3/8 scale Chicago to me.

I'm a a fan of Milwaukee, but above are some of the drawbacks. And one you didn't mention is that GR is on the western edge of the Eastern time zone, which means it stays light until 10 pm in the summer.

  • I've never wanted to live there, but I've always wanted to visit. I'll be there for a couple days next month for a Brewers game so it looks like I'll get my chance.

  • Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?

Alice Cooper: Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers were coming here as early as the late 1600s to trade with the Native Americans.

Pete: In fact, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?

Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.

Really? Bland Rapids has a great arts scene? If being cheap and boring is an art form then yes the scene is vibrant.
