Ex Tenn player and RB coach Jay Graham

  • Former player and Tennessee Coach Jay Graham leaves alma mater to take tbd position at Florida State. While that in itself is no bid deal, except to Tenn as he appears to be a great recruiter and coach.

Here's the rub and thus my concern regarding our to be named OC.

"RB coach Graham was slated to make $260,000 this year. With how much Graham loved his alma mater and working with UT players, chances are that he'll see a significant raise and get more responsibility at Florida State".

Coach Graham would have been the second lowest paid asst coach at Tennessee.

The administration rightfully spent to keep Coach Narduzzi last summer. I know the number that was attached to Roushar's salary, which would have only been slightly higher than Tenn's second lowest paid coach.

How will MSU attract and retain top coaching talent? I have great confidence in our administration but hope the Spartans don't settle for a less proven OC because we weren't willing to pay. I hear Salem and Warner are great candidates but are they the best? If we were willing / able to pay SEC money would Coach Salem and / or Warner be on the radar?

How big of an issue will this be moving forward? Why are MSU coaches on the lower side of compensation compared to other top 25 programs?

It says a lot about Coach D's ability to keep his staff largely in place when it appears the staff could be vulnerable because of compensation.

  • We can afford it they just don't know it yet. You couldn't for any reason convince me one of the largest universities in the country with a stadium that has never fallen out of the top 20 for attendance can't put together a few million to invest I the program. It's retarded to think otherwise and it's the attitude holding B1G athletics.

Not to mention we're getting an extra $17 million in TV money that we weren't getting 10 years ago.

  • wouldn't the board of trustees have to approve increasing our coaches salary's? If yes we should start a letter writing campaign and if that don't work we bring our own candidate to challenge that status quo in 2014

  • This is an interesting question. With all the money everyone claims to be seeing from the BTN, I'm wondering why none of it is being reflected in the football programs - you know, the ones that are actually generating that money.

  • Say what you will about our relative compensation for coaches, but we've always retained our assistants. You can't fault Treadwell or Enos for going after head coaching jobs, but we haven't lost anybody solely because of money. We anted up to keep Narduzzi and gave across-the-board raises to everybody else, even Roushar.

I don't disagee in that MSU has done a great job retaining their coaches and even recognized it in my earlier ramble.

I do think that Narduzzi is close to being underpaid relative to his value and the gap between the salaries in the SEC and some Big 12, ACC and PAC 10 as well as
non-tOSU and UM BIG schools is increasing.

Charlie Baggett's name comes up and we would need $400k to match his last salary just as a position coach.

Tennessee's second lowest paid coach is paid comparably to our old OC.

I suspect Kirby Smart is paid more than Coach D, peak at the salaries on Gus Malzahn's staff and throughout the SEC.

    My concern is two-fold:

Will our OC search be limited because of $$? While Coach Salem and Warner are said to be great candidates, I have to believe our search is somewhat limited.

A day is coming when we won't be able to retain our top coaches as the salary gap is to substantial.

I believe the OC search / hire will be critical in determining our floor and ceiling. Today I think we lack the coaching "wow" factor that Narduzzi, Barnett even Tressell bring to the defense.

  • Our coaches should definitely be paying more. However, Hollis doesn't strike me as a guy who would just horde money in the AD and not compensate his coaches appropriately. Gotta think we invested quite a bit of money when Coach D first got here for Skandalaris and upgrading the facilities. Spent some time paying that back along with the guaranteed money for JLS and staff. Now money has been approved for major upgrades to the north side of the stadium.

Not saying that's the only reason why salaries haven't gone up, but its definitely something to consider.

    Royal

  • Mostly agree with the above. We have to remember that it has taken a year+ fundraising effort and constant discussions, updates, and pleas to the MSU fanbase to try and raise money for the north end expansion. That was what, in the neighborhood of $15 million? When I see that happening, I understand the lack of major salary upgrades because clearly the department doesn't have everything they want to have covered in their current budget.

Having said all that, I would love to see them spend more and get a solid, reputable OC. We'll just have to see what gets worked out.

Fair enough. But let's not compare ourselves to the big spenders in the SEC. They're on a whole 'nother level. I do think we should pay our guys more... but our coaching positions have a lot to offer: stability, rapidly improving facilities, etc. I don't think we're gonna try to make a "splash" hire, nor that we really need one. We need a solid guy who can call a good game and recruit well. We don't need somebody whose hiring is gonna make headlines on ESPN.

Aren't we investing in upgrading the stadium concourse and just finished installing one of the biggest scoreboard/tv setups in the country? Didn't we just give our HC and assistants raises? Would you prefer that MSU just stop educating students and dump everything into athletics?

BTW, I don't necessarily want Baggett or an "elephant hunter". We just hired a DL coach who it sounds like is an upgrade on the recruiting end. I would rather have a solid playcaller, and if MD decides that it is Salem or Warner, I am fine with that.

LISTEN, THERE IS ZERO CHANCE BAGGETT WOULD BE THE COACH, ZERO! Whoever wrote that pulled that name right out of their rear without doing any homework.

Why can't we have a great recruiter and a solid play caller with one guy? Who is our stud recruiter on the offensive side of the ball since Enos left?

The raises get the assistants close to the better programs in the conference, it was catch-up mode. MSU has to stay competitive to stay competitive.

Warner, Salem and Staten do a very good job recruiting

Yeah, who IS our stud recruiter on the O side of the ball? Not sure there is one.

I'm fine w/it too, if he has it right this time. The DR case has me nervous though. If MSU hires someone heavy duty both as a recruiter and an O guru, you know the coach/admin has finally been convinced that it will pay for itself w/ results. Not holding my breath though.

  • Funny you should all bring this up, as it is the basis for part 3 of Hondo's year end football review. Say what you will about Hondo, if you don't like him, don't go to his page. But if you actually want to be informed about the football budget - not just saying "why don't we have B1G Network money" - then Hondo gets into it. The problem lies with the university, not the athletics department. The university is free to raid all of the money that the athletics department makes.
