We can afford it they just don't know it yet. You couldn't for any reason convince me one of the largest universities in the country with a stadium that has never fallen out of the top 20 for attendance can't put together a few million to invest I the program. It's retarded to think otherwise and it's the attitude holding B1G athletics.

Say what you will about our relative compensation for coaches, but we've always retained our assistants. You can't fault Treadwell or Enos for going after head coaching jobs, but we haven't lost anybody solely because of money. We anted up to keep Narduzzi and gave across-the-board raises to everybody else, even Roushar.

I don't disagee in that MSU has done a great job retaining their coaches and even recognized it in my earlier ramble.
I do think that Narduzzi is close to being underpaid relative to his value and the gap between the salaries in the SEC and some Big 12, ACC and PAC 10 as well as non-tOSU and UM BIG schools is increasing.
Charlie Baggett's name comes up and we would need $400k to match his last salary just as a position coach.
Tennessee's second lowest paid coach is paid comparably to our old OC.
I suspect Kirby Smart is paid more than Coach D, peak at the salaries on Gus Malzahn's staff and throughout the SEC.
My concern is two-fold:
Will our OC search be limited because of $$? While Coach Salem and Warner are said to be great candidates, I have to believe our search is somewhat limited.
A day is coming when we won't be able to retain our top coaches as the salary gap is to substantial.
I believe the OC search / hire will be critical in determining our floor and ceiling. Today I think we lack the coaching "wow" factor that Narduzzi, Barnett even Tressell bring to the defense.

Aren't we investing in upgrading the stadium concourse and just finished installing one of the biggest scoreboard/tv setups in the country? Didn't we just give our HC and assistants raises? Would you prefer that MSU just stop educating students and dump everything into athletics?
BTW, I don't necessarily want Baggett or an "elephant hunter". We just hired a DL coach who it sounds like is an upgrade on the recruiting end. I would rather have a solid playcaller, and if MD decides that it is Salem or Warner, I am fine with that.
