Explain a subtle Arrested Development joke

  • Arrested Development is full of subtle jokes that go over the heads of even the most dedicated fans. Find one, and explain it in detail. I'm sure somebody didn't get it originally.

    -When Tobias likens Michael to his gym buddy by saying "same size, same curly hair." But Michael has straight hair. Tobias was referring to penis size and pubic hair.

    -When Michael is dating Rita, he becomes under the impression that British people refer to doctors as "boubamens." But that's only because Rita, who is mentally challenged, refers to the doctor as the "boo-boo-man."

    -When Lupe is caught in bed with Buster... Lindsay asks Lupe to come over and dustbuster. Lupe responds "I no does-Buster any more" (that she no longer has sex with Buster). Lindsay responds that she will personally dustbuster, which Lupe understands as "does-Buster," implying incest.

  • Buster goes to "Mexico" but runs to Lupe's house instead. When inside, he sees the hand chair that used to be his, and says "I used to have one just like that. Boy, I never thought I would miss a hand so much..."

    Foreshadowing him losing his hand a few episodes later. I think its the only show that I know of that foreshadows jokes. Love it!!!

  • In the pilot episode, Gob is talking to George Michael at the Banana Stand. Gob is being his usual Gob self. As he scoutes away on his Segue, George Michael mutters, "he reminds me of Steve Holt".

    Referring to the fact that Gob is Steve Holt's father, and that they are both equally as annoying and obnoxious (but hilarious all the same).

  • Michael and Gob are talking in Michael's office, and Lucille walks in and overhears Michael telling Gob to "get rid of the Seaward" referring to the boat Gob had just purchased. Lucille thinks they are talking about her and referring to her as the "c-word" and says "I'll leave when I'm good and ready." Everyone stares at each other with a confused look on their faces.

    But then later, Tobias says "No, I will NOT let this make me eat again." So if his eating disorder was OVEREATING, that means that the reason he was on his knees in front of the toilet was to give blowjobs. whoa

    The detail of the show is really what makes it special, and probably a reason why so few people got it when it was originally aired, but love it now that its on DVD.

  • One of the benches in Wee Britain has "Wee Britain" painted on it. Rita sits on it in in such a way that it seems like it reads "Wee Brain".

    When Buster has the hand chair taken out of his room, he says "I never knew I'd miss a hand so much." He then later loses his hand.
