Fans under fire for "USA" chant

.......Because if they are genuine Americans, it shouldn't offend them.

That is exactly the reason it SHOULD offend them. If they are genuine Americans, they should take offense to the fact that other people don't feel that they are genuine Americans.

    +1.

If it were not a team and school made up of hispanic students would the students have changed "USA, USA?" Hell no. There was a reason for choosing that particular chant.

  • I'm pretty sure my white high school chanted that against other white high schools. Everybody loves a good USA chant. But this was probably racist.

And if it wasn't obvious to everyone in there that the chant was a comment on the opposing team's race, the Alamo Heights coach wouldn't have immediately told his own fans to stop. I love how people on here who weren't at the game and aren't from that community say there was no problem with this, despite the fact that the people who were actually involved with the incident have recognized that it was wrong. Oh, and they recognized that it was wrong before the media got a hold of this story, so this isn't a matter of a PR move.

Well it was said to insult who we were and where we were from. I know there's a line tha can be crossed but if my fans can get under the other team's skin without crossing it, that's awesome.

I guess the USA chant could be considered insensitive but seriously though, if something like that greatly hurts you, life is gonna be real tough. I used to think America's favorite pastime was transferring blame but now I think it's trying to find a way to be agrieved by nearly anything. Me personally; life's too short for me to care what people, who's opinion I don't value, say or think. Don't get me started on people who apologize for shit that they meant & believe.

For you, life may be too short to find the rare personal insult ("farmer" or otherwise) thrown at you as being demeaning. For those Hispanic fans, this incident may have been just another in a lifetime of insults.

Let's assume you have a 9 inch penis. If someone comes up to you and says, "Ha Ha, you have a 3 inch penis!" would you actually get offended?

Let's assume that you and some other guys live in a very predominantly female community.

There is a history of men being treated poorly in that community. There has been public debate about the problem of men moving into the community. It's a nice place and sometimes men take up residence there in ways that violate the law. Sometimes women on the street will look at you men in unfriendly ways or make derogatory comments that you overhear. It's been suggested that --at the least-- you guys should start acting like women to, you know, fit in.

You and some guy friends take part in a competition and the all-women's team beats you and their female fans start an excited chant:

"Woman Power! Woman Power! Woman Power!"

Maybe--just maybe-- you might guess that there is a bit more to the chant than simple female excitement.

edit : or how about this-- some women in the community have suggested that you men aren't really human. And the chant goes" "Humans! Humans! Humans!" You feel that you are human too, but maybe this chant has some mysterious underlying message....

Yet I still wouldn't be offended, or even feel like I have the right to be offended in that situation.....

First, your analogy doesn't work, because men by their nature, are not women. So that chant doesn't work. In the case at hand the other basketball team is (presumably) composed of US citizens.

Second, let's make this analogy a little more apropos. Let's say the men in your theoretical have a history of violence and murder in their community next door. As a result their criminal element continue to attempt to run their crimes through your neighborhood...resulting in much tension and stress, and the need for many resources to combat it. At the same time there are many men who are in the women's community now who are not involved in that hubbub, but those are difficult to differentiate from the ones who are there illegally. It's not hard to see how those women might be inclined to comments or concern that the negative elements of the men's community might follow.

Lastly, it's a completely foolish analogy because a women's team would never beat a mens team biggrin

first - see the "Humans!" chant edit that was part of what you quoted

second- Okay, Yet it's not hard to see how the law-abiding men might resent the comments and concerns directed at them by sexist women who cannot distinguish between men.....But then all men look alike, right?
