Fantasy Football

  • So how many of you guys that play fantasy football buy the magazines or do you do most of your research online? I usually buy the sports illustrated one/

  • If I need reading material for a vacation I might buy one. Otherwise, I use a bunch of different sites on the web that are free.

    Spartanram

  • I usually buy one or two mags and do some online research.

The problem with the magazines is they are written and printed in may every years (most of them) and a LOT can change between then draft time in August.

For an auction draft it is best to check what the players are going for at the very end before the draft.

  • I do almost all of my research online. My group drafts in person, though, so I still buy a magazine just to cross off players as they're picked and to have a tangible, ordered list right in front of me to make decisions and speed things along.

Since I don't have a working laptop I think of the magazine as bringing notes to a test. It's good to research everything first but it's still nice to have something there with you in the moment.

  • Never bought a magazine. The NFL is an injuries league, and players get cut all the time. Cannot be the guy who drafts TJ Houshmanzadeh the day after he get cut.

I go strictly online because of this. Most magazines have been out for weeks and wont take into account injuries and position battles.

For the most part, I read ESPN's fantasy football section and listen to their daily Fantasy Focus podcast (which is free on iTunes).

  • Are there any websites you can suggest in particular and like spartanram I'm getting a magazine or 2 because I'll be on vacation for a couple days and figured I'd pick one up.

  • I'll give you guys my hint. Check out Fantasy Football today at fftoday.com.

Once you make a free account, you can enter your league's scoring system and their stat projections will be used to create a draft board for you based on your league. I've used them the last 4 years and never finished worse than 3rd in my league (a relatively competitive $200 league with people who know what they're doing). I've won 2 of the last 3 years and it's often based on guys I've gotten in later rounds by strictly sticking to their ratings (while watching other people in front of me draft players way down my draft board).

  • The best site I've seen is RotoWorld.com. It has a nominal fee, but you get extensive research, and it's updated constantly. My league had unique scoring and roster rules, and their model allows for editing the scoring system more than others, so it gave a better prediction (specifically when choosing between 2 players who play different positions).

It's nice to find sleepers late in the draft, but everyone needs to draft someone in each of the early rounds too. If you draft early, you better get one of the stud QBs. If you're one of the last to draft, you're probably better off getting the best WR, RB or TE, taking them a round earlier than others might. (My league valued QBs more than the typical league)

FWIW, Rotoworld lets you customize the rankings anyway you want, create a pdf, then print it off, which is nice for draft day. Or, you can just use the software to show when someone is drafted, and it'll list the available players, and how they rank overall.

There's something to be said for using your gut and your own instinct when drafting, but there's also something to be said for using projections and rankings from guys who get paid to do so. I've won my league in the past not based on picks in the first few rounds (we all know what those guys are going to do). It's by having your fourth or fifth WR turn into a star (Jordy Nelson). It's by having my 3rd or 4th RB turn into an every week starter (Fred Jackson, Darren Sproles, etc). The better your picks for your bench guys, the better your team.

I don't look at any rankings until I get to my reserve players. I agree picking bench players can be tough without notes.

Nice comprehensive list of a ton of different rankings, and when they were last updated.

I figure if I'm printing out sheets to keep track of who has and hasn't been drafted, there's no reason not to peak at it in the early rounds as well. That being said, if you're trying to pick between the 7th or 8th running back on your list, nothing wrong with going with gut instinct. There are always guys rated too high in my opinion and I let others draft them early while I pick up who I really want later on in the draft.
