Fantasy Football Draft Question/Strategy

  • Outside of Aaron Rodgers, would you take a QB in the 1st round? We are doing a 12 team PPR and this year QB passing TD's count for 6 points vs. the traditional 4. Picking at 7 good chance Brees or Brady is there. In the past I wait on taking a QB but last year it killed me with Cassel and Cutler as my QB's and then the waiver wire when they both got hurt. Would taking a QB in round 1 make sense now with the 6 points?

  • I would absolutely do it under those circumstances. The top QB's are much more consistent than a RB at the same spot. Brady should be gone by then, though. Unless you're really in love with Jamaal Charles, Matt Forte, or Chris Johnson; you're probably taking a QB or WR.

  • I'd take either for sure

  • TD's worth 6? Then hell yes. If you can get Rodgers, Brady, or Brees (who could be playing from behind a lot this season), you've almost got a guaranteed 300 yard performance every week. That's something you don't get out of Romo, Rivers, Cutler, etc. Just make sure you go RB in rounds 2 and 3 or else you might not get good starters. Wait on WRs.

Yeah I hate this argument that I have to draft WR's early as well (not that I love the RB class this year). I have brought this up before and it's only now becoming realized. WR is a dependent position. How else can anyone explain Steve Smith magically finding form with Cam Newton versus the Jake Delhomme era? When I draft any receiver, I try to make sure I trust the guy throwing the ball to him. It's why Jordy Nelson can have a big year and it's why I'm bullish on Brandon Lloyd.

  • Are any of your leagues using 6 points vs. 4 for QB's?

ours is going from 6 to 5 this year - not happy about it

picking 11/12 this year so a qb is likely in round one

Agree with this post. The picks in the first couple rounds are all about differentiating your team at a position. My league does 6 pts per TD, and 25 yards per point, here's the top 5 in points for the year:
    1. Rodgers - 487.42
    2. Brees - 484.64
    3. Brady - 446.30
    4. Stafford - 426.32
    5. Newton - 413.34

There's a clear split between Rodgers and Brees, and everybody else, but there's also a HUGE split between those top 5, and the #6 guy. Eli Manning was number 6 at 342.82.

Tight end is another spot where there is a HUGE drop after the first 2. Last year Gronkowski had 240.9 and Jimmy Graham had 196.00, while nobody else had more than 136. I'm not saying to take those guys in the first round, but they are absolutely worth of a high pick if you think they'll come close to their numbers from last year.

At WR, Calvin Johnson had 48 more points than the next receiver (Jordy Nelson).

You can see the same thing at RB where Rice, Mccoy, MJD and Foster were well above everybody else. Personally, I'm staying away from MJD this year as the history of guys that sit out the pre-season isn't great.

I think I would definitely look to take a QB in the first round at 7 with those rules. Rodgers, Brady and Brees are the top echelon, but even Stafford wouldn't be a bad pick there. The dude threw for 5k+ yards and 41 td's last year.

Eli isn't a bad pick in the second round if the OP was able to get a good RB at 7 (ex. McCoy, Rice, Foster).

    Cam Newton.

Not really.. 6 points for passing TDs actually devalues running QBs. In this format I would want Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Stafford in that order.

Depends on what you expect out of Eli this year. If you expect him to be about the same as last year, then the 2nd round is probably too early because he was well behind the top 5 and was pretty much identical last year to Matt Ryan and Romo. Vick was a little way back in total points, but he only started 13 games, so you have to include him in there as well. That's already 9 quarterbacks, and very few people will start drafting backup QB in the first half of the draft.

IMO if you can't get one of those top 5 guys, you can get better value in the first 2 rounds at a different position, and then you get get a 2nd tier guy in rounds 4-6

    go ahead and take brady

we can talk at the end of the year

brees is playing without his coach as well - in case you missed that

and stafford plays for the lions

My draft is tonight and it's the same exact format as yours. We've used this format the past 3 years. I pick 12th this year and fully expect Brees and Brady to be gone (Rodgers will be gone within the first 4 picks). If they are there, I will take one of them.

I would definitely take one of them at 7 if they are still available (which I would expect at least one of them to be).

That's particularly the case this year. Everyone and their grandma is throwing for 4000-5000 yards. And some of the WRs widely considered elite for 2011 (Andre Johnson, Victor Cruz) I'm not that thrilled with. In my two 10-team leagues i didn't go WR until Round 4 and Round 5, and I'm fine with that.

If one of those three is still there at 7 in a PPR league, then there are some questionable picks before that.

I can almost guarantee that the first five picks in my draft tonight (same format as his) will be Foster, Rice, McCoy, Calvin, and Rodgers. Maybe one of those five falls to 6, but I wouldn't expect any of them to be there at 7.

12 PPR with 6pt passing TDs means you'll have to take a good QB sooner than later. after the drop of the big 3 (AR, TB, DB) you might be better served getting a good catching RB or top Receiver with your first 2 picks. then start crunching for a QB because you don't want to be left with someone no good. also check your interception penalty for the QB. one of my leagues is -2 instead of -1. that could be huge for a QB who throws lots of INTs,

    CmdrNebula19863

  • I don't have much experience in PPR leagues, but my draft order is the 3 RBs (rice, foster, mccoy), the 3 QBs (rodgers, brady, brees), and then CJ. I'm not overly high on Newton, especially at 6 points/TD, but Stafford might not be too big a reach in the 1st.

Agreed. To me it's a matter of grabbing WR's with upside that play with a good QB rather than a great WR with a terrible QB (aka the Larry Fitzgerald rule).

    sprtnbrn

  • The only Qb I'd consider taking at 7 is Rodgers and he is likely not going to be there.

    bulldogg

  • You can wait really long on wide receiver this year, but I think it helps to have one of the top three QBs. I heard this stat that only 40% of the running backs and wide receivers taken in the last few years have had top 10 seasons while that number for QBs is like 70%.

Get one of the three QBs at 7, take a back like Matt Forte if he's available with your next pick, and wait until the 4th or 5th to take a WR.

I'm in an auction (so it's bit different), but in a 12-team PPR I got Brandon Marshall and Antonio Brown as my starting WRs for a total of $12 ($100 budget). There are bargains to be had at WR, not so much with QB and RB.

Right - if the other guys in the league are smart, none of those three would be around at seven. I was saying I would think about passing on a top QB in that spot IF they were there.

Eli in the 2nd? No thanks. In a 12 teamer, 3rd/4th round.
