Favorite Detroit lunch spot...

  • Only thing I would add is
    Sweetwater-Chicken Wings(Best I've ever had)
Joe Muer(best sushi,Burger) but really pricey
    Plaka Cafe(gyro)
    Pizza Papalis(deep dish pizza)
if you goto Loco(only go on tuesday for $1 tacos)
Forans(Grand Trunk), Bucharest grill, Greenwich tavern(quick simple burger)

I think everybody got the rest of the places.

  • In addition to a lot of good suggestions already in the thread, I'd check out Woodbridge Pub and Z's if you're looking for spots near midtown. I don't think either of those have been brought up yet. Z's is a good spot to go to when the weather is nice because there's outdoor seating. Oh, and if you're into Chinese, you should stop by Shangri-La for some dim sum.

  • Orchid Thai all day. I also love Sweetwater wings and BBQ from Redsmoke.

People looking for a good burger downtown need to check out Checker Bar just north of Jefferson. It's kind of a dive but the burgers are the better than Detroiter, imo.

  • Vendetti's Spanky House (near detroit sort of)

  • On a related note. I will be spending the night downtown next Friday for a 30th birthday party for one of my wife's friends. Late night drunk food is very important and I would love some recommendations for places that are within stumbling distance from the Hilton Garden Inn on Gratiot.

Layefette Coney is the only answer.
    But here are other suggestions,
Plaka Cafe if in greektown(coneys, gyros), If around Town Pump area-Buracreast grill(chicken shawarma).

Plaka's is 24 hours. They sell pretty much everything; coneys, gyros, burgers, etc. In Greektown across from the casino and near the bakery if memory serves me.

Definitely try Shangri-La. Great Chinese food.

Also, I like Niki's in Greektown. They have good greek-style pizza.

What about Midtown area? Just got a new job at Henry Ford. I'll be on days for a while and actually be eating lunch when restaurants are open! Pretty excited about that.

Did you get a fancy enough new job that you don't have to park off site? I very rarely go out to lunch from work because it's such a hassle to take the shuttle to my car and back.

Having said that, if you can get away, Woodbridge Pub, Union Street, and Slows to Go are all good choices.

I'm interested to hear that City Wings might actually be good, that'd definitely be walkable for lunch.

Shangri-La is awesome. They use much better cuts of meat than any other Chinese place I've been to.

Agreed. I had been to their midtown restaurant numerous times before I found out about their other locations. I was visiting my buddy in W Bloomfield and he suggested Shangri-La at 1 am. Great late-night drunk food.

  • I haven't seen it mentioned (so maybe that is my answer), but how are the pizzas at Motor City Brewing Works? I have had their beer and I am down with it, but was thinking about going by for a meal. I know they do brick oven pizzas. Are they any good?

I've only tried the pizza once, and it was a couple years ago, but I remember being impressed. I'm not sure if it's changed after they've had some time to tweak the recipes, but I think it's worth a visit. Are they allowed to use the parking lot they sit in anymore, or has traffic jam completely claimed control of it?

Oh god, how could I have forgotten them? Their BBQ chicken pizza is SO. FUCKING. GOOD. Absolutely a must for midtown dining.

They have around half a dozen or so parking spots, but Traffic Jam is still holding them hostage. They're just butthurt because MCB is better in every possible way.

Thanks (and @ Fishrose - if only technology on the interwebs developed to the point where a person could quote more than one individual at a time. They could call it "multi-quote" or something like that. But, alas, I digress)! I may give them a try tomorrow.
