Favorite guitarists?

  • I noticed there have been a lot of music-related threads here lately, and as a guitar player and major guitar enthusiast in general, I'm wondering what are some of your favorite guitarists? I'm going to list the guys who I personally enjoy their style the most, not just the most impressive technical players:

Jimi Hendrix (not a creative choice but you've got to admit...guy was good)
    Eric Clapton
    Jimmy Page
James Taylor (love his creativity and just creating a cool, unique sound)
    David Gilmour
    Stevie Ray Vaughn
    Chuck Berry
    Jeff Beck
Mick Taylor, Keith Richards (Richards is NOT a great technical player but makes the most awesome-sounding riffs)
    Ry Cooder
    All the Allman Brothers guitarists
    Neil Young (simple but effective)
    Richard Thompson
    Mark Knopfler
    Buddy Guy

I listed a ton but I feel like I left out so many. As you can tell I kind of lean towards the bluesy-players but I like a lot of styles.

  • I'll throw Lindsey Buckingham, Billy Gibbons, The Edge, and Prince into the mix. People might laugh off Prince, but catch him on the right night and he's absolutely off the charts.

Lindsey Buckingham is hugely underrated. "Never Going Back Again" is one of my favorite songs from a guitar-playing standpoint ever. I think a lot of people know about Prince's ability since the Super Bowl performance.

  • Randy Rhoads as a purely amazing guitar player.
David Gilmour had the cleanest sound during some of his solos, and he gets bonus points for being in my favorite band.

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads top my list for the combination of amazing ability and letting their guitar work serve the song. As for tone and style, I like Angus Young, David Gilmour, Mike Campbell, Waddy Wachtel, Buddy Guy, and Warren Haynes.

    Pervis Muldoon

  • Trey Anastasio

  • Of the new school:

    Oli Herbert- All That Remains
    Synyster Gates- Avenged Sevenfold

    Lawre167

  • Gossard and McCready (awesome duo)
    Slash (amazing phrasing and tone)
Billy Corgan (hugely underrated, best all-around guitarist of the 90s)
    Hendrix (duh)
John Frusciante (he's just on fire on the Stadium Arcadium album, especially on "Strip My Mind," "Wet Sand," and "Readymade")
Alex Rosamilia (nothing spectacular, but his leads are perfect for his band)

Nice Mike Campbell call. Criminally underrated player.

I don't know if anyone was more talented than SRV. Just a phenomenal player.

  • Though I am a huge fan of the technical, virtuoso players, one of my favorite guitarists is Miika Tenkula (RIP), the former guitarist of Sentenced. He plays some of the best, most catchy solos in metal. Of the top of my head, one of my favorite solos in from Neverlasting. It begins around 2:05 in the embedded video.

Of course, since I am a Dream Theater fan, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the awesome John Petrucci.

    Sentenced - Neverlasting

Another song from the Sentenced's album The Cold White Light(2002) Lyrics: Carpe diem... Seize the day before your life fades away Reach for the skies - for the distant sun And keep on hiding from the gun No! You need to sell your soul for it's great to lose control Can't you feel that growing desire Go down with the blazing fire You need to burn and reach the point of no return refrain: - Waste no time dreaming in vain! You and I aren't built to last - Go astray - the only way! You and I will make it fast - Burn the candle at both ends! Let's take the ride before we fall - Leave no room for happy endings! And make it right for once and for all Something's twisted in your head for you live as you were dead So therefore you must play with the gun and be sure to have your fun Take my hand and I'll lead you astray for it's the only way Let's give in to the growing desire and go down with the blazing fire We need to burn and reach the point of no return refrain (2x) Yes, I know. It would be more exciting with more pictures and editing. LEGAL DISCLAIMER: I do not own this piece of music, lyrics nor the album cover. All rights belongs to the band and their record company. • Lots of greats named already. I'll add Pete Townsend and Jack White.

Even though he was mentioned a few times already, Hendrix was in a class by himself. Clapton, Beck and Page have all gone on record saying they couldn't touch him.

  • The OP ran down a good portion of my "favorites" list, so I won't repeat those. Here are a few more for your consideration.

I have always loved the guitar work of Lowell George formerly of Little Feat. I would add from my favorites list Paul Kossoff, Mike Bloomfield, Ronnie Wood, Skunk Baxter (for that matter all of the Steely Dan guitarists), Don Felder, Robin Trower, Johnny Winter, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines, to name a few.

  • Hendrix (obviously)
Lindsey Buckingham (the Eddie Van Halen of the acoustic guitar)
Noel Gallagher (hard to separate the songwriting from the guitar playing for me sometimes, but I love his solos)
    Brian May
    George Harrison

  • Pretty good list. I'd throw Chad Kroeger in there somewhere too.

  • Harvey "The Snake" Mandel is one of the most under appreciated guitarist ever. His albums Righteous and Christo Redemptor are as good as anything from the early 70's. He played with Charlie Musselwhite and Canned Heat. That's him on the Rolling Stones "Hot Stuff" and on Wilbert Harrison's "Let's Work Together," If he's new to you and you love rock and roll guitar he is a whole new rock and roll guitar universe to discover.
