Andy McKey. Never heard him of him, right? You definitely have if you're into fingerstyle guitar, or you happen to know who own the TOP 2 videos of all time on youtube.

I'll bet Andy is a fan of Michael Hedges.

This song is extracted from the Space Ship Live DVD of Paul Gilbert, played by Paul Gilbert, Marco Minnemann (Ilegal Aliens, Necrophagist, etc) and Linus of Hollywood (Size 14, Pintsize, etc)

  • I'll throw Andy Summers from The Police in there. Limited catalog due to the band's relatively short creative life, but a style all his own.

Shuggie Otis has to be mentioned - bio says he started playing guitar at age 2.

Shuggie is pretty solid, too bad he never really broke through. Definitely ahead of his time.

  • As you could probably guess from my screen name and avatar, Hendrix is my number one all time.

Obviously, most of the other great rock guitarists have been name-checked at some point in this thread. I'm particularly a fan of Neil Young (I like how his solos tend to meander and make you guess where they're headed -- it's a bit more of a slow burn) and Santana.

From my perspective, guys like Stevie Vai, Joe Satriani, Roy Buchanan, etc. don't do anything for me. Great chops, but it doesn't move me emotionally.

I don't think I've seen Tom Morello name-checked so far in this thread yet. I like his use of effects to create a lot of different textures in Rage's songs.

Hendrix is probably the best ever.

Always thought the Meat Puppets had some amazing guitar playing on their albums.

Just saw Alice Cooper play last night in Newark with Maiden. Alice has been a long time favorite, esp. Love it to Death and Killer. \m/

I second Anastasio and Metheny. Kind of shocked no one has mentioned John McLaughlin. He, along with Zappa, just owned the instrument, and went waaaaay outside the boundries of what was thought possible back then. Those four are the absolute tops for me in terms of making a guitar into virtually anything they wanted.

Alex Lifeson got me hooked on the guitar in '77 and I've been playing ever since. He is so creative and unorthodox the way he either paints behind the scenes, or his method of soloing.

Gilmour is an obvious choice for creating solos you can sing. A true album-rock god. Best pure soloist of all time, in my opinion. But does more than solo (listen to the entire Animals album, and all the stripped down background work he does).

And give it up for U2's the Edge. Not my style at all, but he was doing his odd-tuning rhythm thing during the height of garbage glam metal / speed soloing. Completely against the grain, and really made songs bigger than they were -- turning a guitar into a percussion instrument. Hat tip to the Edge for being unique and relevant.

    Nice post.

I really agree with the first paragraph specifically.

Somebody else in this mentioned that jam band guitarists can be boring, and I don't really disagree wholeheartedly. The part I disagree with is the "no offense Phish fans" part. Trey is as exciting a guitarist as you'll find. I don't know if a single person named in this thread could move 30K, 40K, 50K, 60K people emotionally the way Trey has at various times over the years.

  • Many great guitarists in this thread. No one had mentioned Sonny Landreth yet. His best work is with John Hiatt ... always in service to the song.

And for those of you that think Riding With the King is a BB King/Eric Clapton song; John Hiatt wrote the song.

  • Honestly, most of the people mentioned in this thread are athletes, not musicians. They play fast, sure. But it's just muscle training. Their level of skill is not in short supply. Hang out in the amp room of any Guitar Center in America. You'll meet a dozen 16 year old kids in every city who have the solo from Eruption down cold.

My favorite guitar players tend also to be my favorite song writers. I'm a big fan of Jason Noble (Rodan, Shipping News), Tom Reno (Mercury Program), and Michael Nace (Drill for Absentee).

Did you read the thread before you commented on the other choices? Barely anyone was naming speed players. The other difference is that those kids at GC didn't WRITE Eruption.

Sorry, but it just doesn't do it for me. There's not a single lick in that two minute video that I found memorable or made me want to grab one of my guitars off the wall and figure it out. But obviously some people love Anastasio, and more power to them.

    Well, that's just not true.

I even said I don't think this Noel Gallagher belongs in a "best guitarist" conversation, but he has moved 30K, 40K, 50K, 60K, and hell, 150K (Knebworth Park) plenty of times. Tell me this crowd of 90K isn't moved:
