Favorite song: Beatles, Stones, Radiohead.

  • Beatles - Within You Without You (my all time favorite song by anybody)
    Stones - Heaven
Radiohead - Everything In It's Right Place

    LogicalBuck

  • Beatles - Dig a Pony
Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knockin'
Radiohead - I don't know any Radiohead stuff well enough to cull out a favorite. I don't have a problem with them, just haven't really spent time investigating their catalogue.

I got negged twice for saying mostly the same thing

Which is hardly surprising. Radiohead fans tend to go into massive butthurt mode with even the slightest insinuation that Radiohead might -not- be the greatest and most profound cultural achievement in the history of modern western culture.

And then -that- post gets negged.

It's one thing to get downvoted, but to get downvoted by a passive-aggressive Emo dork with a Radiohead obsession who's taking out his anger about being too broke to score Lolla tickets...seriously.

I like a fair amount of Radioheads stuff but what you say is very true. I mean sorry if I feel RATM, The Roots and TV on The Radio all make better music. You say that to some Radiohead stans and the automatically assume you know nothing about music.

Stones are definitely one of the great rock bands, but I don't feel like their music really evolved and pushed the envelope in the same respect as tBeatles and Radiohead.

Lol. I'm not the biggest radiohead fan, but in your analogy, they would be the talented artist with the nice gallery. For my third pick, I wanted to put in a popular band that has performed in the past 20 years. Most of U2s stuff has sucked for the past 20 years. There have been better bands than radiohead, but they have been the most influential/popular.

hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.

  • It's interesting to see how polarizing Radiohead has become over the past 5 years specifically. 14 years ago, when they released OK Computer, they went from being an underrated brit pop band (Pablo Honey and Bends were GREAT brit pop albums, but they sounded more like they were copying from the Stone Roses/Charlatans) to the "IT" band and really started coming into the Radiohead sound we know today. That was all well and good until they released In Rainbows (AKA, the "free" album) and then it suddenly became the "hipster douche" band to like.

Putting them in the same breath as the Beatles & Stones may not be fair, although, the Beatles were only active for about 10 years... about the same length of time that Radiohead has been a stadium act, so longevity is not the question, although societal impact may be.

If you were going add a third to that list, with the caveat being that the third band had to be a relatively contemporary rock act, who would it be? It's been mentioned before, but U2 would probably have to be the closest... maybe Pearl Jam?

I have to be the only 30-35 year old white guy that likes rock music, and loves live music, and PJ/Radiohead/Phish do NOTHING for me.

You young whippersnappers can be forgiven for not understanding the impact and influence of the Beatles/Stones/Who/Led Zepplin/Doors/Pink Floyd etc... We are never going to see these super groups again, the conditions no longer exist to allow anyone to display musical originality, get it recorded and get it played. You are correct though, U2 by far has come closest to what these groups accomplished.

Follow up question... were the bands you listed actually more talented than today's bands or were their just fewer choices in the 50's, 60's and 70's, therefore these bands got more airplay and were thrust to the foreforont and their social/cultural impact is therefore skewed due to a lack of competition.
I don't like the Doors at all... but at the time if you were given the choice between playing 96 Tears by ? and the Mysterious or the latest Doors record, which do you choose?
