Fellow men: Why do you care so much about your lawn?

  • This is something I have never, ever understood and never will. Maybe one of you can successfully explain it to me. It seems lots of guys care about their lawns to the point of pure obsession. It's a major point of pride for many to have the best lawn in the neighborhood. Having the best lawn in the neighborhood is a pretty serious investment of time and money too. And what is there to gain? Having a neighbor drive by and say "wow that's a nice lawn!" and pretty much forget about it and instantly turn their attention to important matters? I don't think even the nicest lawn in the world is that damn impressive. Greenskeepers obsessively work to make grass look nice but they get paid for it, and golf courses are a business that makes money. You pay money to keep your own lawn looking nice, and people don't pay you for your lawn. In the grand scheme, does anyone really care?

My father and grandfather are like this. My dad keeps saying he has the best lawn in the neighborhood, and he and my grandfather work on their lawns in some capacity every single day. I didn't inherit that gene I guess. Nice lawns won't get you bitches either. Bitches don't give two craps about lawns. Nice cars will at least impress some girls, so I can kind of understand those men who obsessively work on their cars to some extent. This I don't get and if you can convince me that it's worthwhile, I may be impressed for 2 seconds before turning my attention to more important matters, kind of like your nice lawn.

  • Nice lawns can get you compliments and sometimes respect from your neighbors. Isn't that enough?

Also, by keeping a good lawn or landscaping, you set example for others and hope for them to do the same. Would you want to look at someone's crappy front yard every time you drive down the street?

Your lawn is a point of personal pride. It's also one of the first things people see when they look at your house.

  • Why do you shave your face?
Why wash your car it just gets dirty?
Why bother planting bushes or flowers, most of them just die in the winter?
    Why shine your shoes?

  • It doesn't take THAT much more work to have a nice lawn. It is a matter of personal pride. It is a reflection of the Man, plain and simple..

I like my lawn to look nice for me, not for anyone else. Of coure my Ego is in play here, but I enjoy the work, it is great exercise, and it is a good time to reflect and do some thinking. I mow about 5 acres and some of my best decision making and creative thinking comes during those hours of mowing. Spraying weed killer and doing trimming and raking is also brainless work, but satisfying work. It is enjoyable to see results. It is also relaxing..

For me it is a matter of personal pride to come up my long driveway and see a job well done.

And my kids see it too. So do friends. It says "I care, and I pay attention, and I know what the Hell I'm doing". It shows the kids what a good work ethic is. Not too much more important in life than that.. ;)

Applies to the kids, too. I escape many-a-run-in by saying "I'll be out mowing the lawn!" surrender

  • Right now I don't give a crap about my lawn. Damn drought has it burnt up and looking like shyt. I would water it if it was just a dry spell between rainy days, but there's no point at wasting my well and life of my pump. It will bounce back in the fall just in time to play some catch and recreate mousetrap a few times.

This is the only answer. I was going to respond to the OP with "You must not have a wife and kids".

  • For me, my lawn and garden, both Veggie and Flower are hobbies. I work on them (water, pick weeds, etc..) when I get home from work. It calms me down after a stressful day. Plus yes the compliments are nice, the fresh veggies are nice, and the flowers are pretty.

  • The whole lawn thing is kind of stupid ... definite 50's fetish. Hey, I like a well-manicured lawn as much as the next guy. Unlike many of the next guys, though, I realize it is often not particularly environmentally friendly. Having said that, many people manage to have nice lawns without being one person plagues.

"According to the Environmental Protection Agency, home lawns produce a significant amount of run-off water contaminated with pesticides and fertilizers, which can be toxic to humans and aquatic life. And the typical gas-powered lawnmower produces six times more pollution per hour than a car."

  • I was born a poor black child, and our lawn was nothing but weeds and sand. I told myself that someday, when I was grow'd up, I'd have me a plush, green lawn. And that's all I'd need--a plush, green lawn.

That is why you keep the lawn a bit longer. It keeps water better. Trust me right now my lawn is as brown as everyone else. We are in a huge drought. The only thing I water is my veggie garden and I water that sometimes twice a day.

  • Our neighbor is a piece of shit who put in irrigation systems and blasts the shit out of his entire property with fertilizer and who knows what else all the time. Everyone else on the street just waters with sprinklers.

  • You don't have to be a lawn fanatic to keep it looking nice. A good homeowner will take some pride in keeping the property looking decent. Even the few lawn boys in my sub are having a tough time in this drought.

My lawn looks like shit in summer because the Bermuda requires a lot of water.

  • The enjoyment doesn't come out of appearance, or trying to out do your neighbor. It can be quite the opposite. At it's best Lawn care is a very Zen pursuit, a simple activity that you can become totally absorbed in without expectation of outcome. A welcome change from a stressful, competitive job.

Ok now this makes a lot of sense. I'm not married so maybe that's why I don't yet understand, haha.

I actually do understand some of your replies I guess it makes sense it is something to focus on that takes your mind off more stressful matters. Thank you gentlemen for enlightening me. The RCMB is a wonderful place for learning about the world.
