Nevermind was not even their best, IMO. And I disagree.

  • I think that there are tons of better bands. Dream Theater comes to mind for me. They are good though, I'll give you that.

  • (In response to the "Nirvana is overrated" posts):

A band's importance is always at least a little bit overinflated when a talented young musician dies young (i.e. The Doors), and this was also the case with Nirvana. I think they were and still are a great band, but it's true that their importance has been blown a little out of proportion (due largely to overzealous music journalists).

Nirvana never had a chance to completely stretch their musical muscles (though 99% of bands would kill to have an album as excellent as Nevermind), they never had a chance to grow up as a band--Kurt Cobain's suicide prevented that. However, Bleach is a solid debut album, Nevermind is still a GREAT album, and In Utero holds up as a fairly uncompromising follow-up.

It would have been interesting to see what Nirvana could have done if Cobain had gotten his physical/psychological problems together and if Grohl had eventually gotten involved in the songwriting process. They may have continued to create some really interesting (and great) music.

They never would have made it. Grohl has turned out to be one of this generation's truly great musicians. I really don't think he would have given up that much to be "just a drummer". Cobain's anger and sarcasm would have either been tamed by his sobriety, or by simply getting older and richer. Some bands/frontmen have it in them to evolve and change their music. Can you imagine Cobain singing "everlong", "monkeywrench", or softening his writing? I don't think he was that kind of artist. I really think that, along with the smack, was why he killed himself. He was already in incredible pain, mentally and physically. Having to deal with being just another band was something he couldn't do.

Their importance never got compromised because Nirvana never made "We built this city on Rock and Roll". They never had a bad record, they never ran out of material, Cobain never stopped being a cynical, angry messed up writer, and the band never had to resolve any inner conflicts or creative differences (to my knowledge anyway). They released an handful of albums that will stand the test of time and defined a generation. That is why they are so revered.

  • Anyone get their tix delivered for the Palace show in a couple of weeks yet? Still haven't gotten mine and starting to get concerned.

I can't seem to find a confirmation email from when I bought them either. Anyone have an email address for whomever the Foo used to sell tickets on this tour? I got them on the pre-sale using the LIMO password

  • I was always a big fan of them, but after seeing them at Lollapolloza I am going to have to agree. I have not been to a lot of concerts but I have been to some good ones and their Lollapollaza performance was absolutely amazing!

FF can suck a fat one. F them, F Dave Grohl. I wish they would just go away and stop putting out terrible music.

Their new stuff isn't terrible; it's just not as good as their old stuff. That's a fact. I don't really listen to the new album at all, I'd rather listen to Colour and the Shape or Nothing Left to Lose.

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...

  • Do you younger guys like/listen to the Foo Fighters? I'm their age, and I'm trying to think of a band I would listen to that's 10, 20, 30 years older than me. I can't think of one.

  • So you are...early/mid 30s? And you wouldn't listen to Metallica, Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, Hendrix, The Clash, Ramones...etc? Damn, that would suck.

Honestly, no. I used to listen to that stuff, but I'm tired of it. 38, and I like the newer bands. But, bands that I grew up with, including RHCP, Beastie Boys, etc, are putting out some pretty good stuff. Just wondering if the younger gen likes them too.

  • Plenty of better bands than the Foo Fighters with more talent and just as strong or stronger ability to draw in their audience. I enjoy them from time to time, but they are too formulaic to be considered the "greatest" of anything.
