France At Guard, FS Battle & More

And yeah, Barnett was a huge loss, yet funny, because his loss has not been huge. Solid recruiting is a real luxury, indeed. The guy goes from savior of our dreams, alonfg with, it should be noted, Klatt, and now neither is there, and the beat goes on.

I don't know about you, but I was sure feeling Barrent's absence during the ND game last year.

That looks like the scouting report against France last year. He's strong protecting on blitzes from the inside, but struggles against speed rushers that attack from the outside. Those that ignore history are bound to repeat it.

Haha! Yeah I hear you, but if you look at their recruiting and see the guys they have on board and then look at when those guys typically start it certainly works. (haven't heard about any of them being tossed from the NFL for performance drugs yet)

They go after guys who are naturally big and then throw them all in the weight program until their 4-5 year to start. Alvarez coached at Nebraska under Osborne and he borrowed that same philosophy.

I personally think that is what will work for us as well. Get these big kids and build the depth so you don't have to see them until they are a 4th or 5th year player. Then seemingly come out of nowhere and earn national honors. With the way MD is building depth and had we not had a rash of injuries with the 2008-2009 guys things would look a lot different on the OL. We would probably have our starters backed up by 2nd and 3rd stringers that could compete well.

You are correct. The average weight of WI's starting 5 OL is 330 lbs. The same 5 players averaged 301 lbs. when they signed.

The average weight of MSU's starting 5 is 299 lbs. They averaged 273 lbs. when they signed.

I don't recall hearing about MSU coaching staff's recruiting philosphy regarding OL. Do they intentionally pick lighter more agile OL or is it a matter of not being able to sign the elephantine OL WI does every year?

CBD - Any thoughts on this?

Bigger is not better most of the time. If Wiscy's OL went through Ken Mannie's workouts I doubt they would avg. 330. I still maintain that Wiscy just has the OL coach that is best at teaching guys to hold without getting caught.

Not exactly. I would understand that if they were amazing at pass protection being 330lb, but they are well coached in run blocking. They do have trouble with speed rushers (Denicos had big games against them twice).

That's not a byproduct of size either. UGA's line was huge but got 0 push against us. On the other hand, Kevin Zeitler 1v1 manhandled Worthy at times as well as getting outmatched by 99 at times.
