other than cold weather the reporter didn't list one single positive about State

surprised he didn't find a way to work in a plug for scum

No joke. They may as well write a headline that says "michigan state can't get kids out of the midwest and here's why"...I'd feel better about that.

  • I think there is a very good chance Benenoch ends up being the best O-lineman signed by either MSU or UM for 2013 class, and that presents problems for the Freep. Add to that Riley Norman if/when he commits, and Detroit papers will be in full damage control mode.

THIS. George Sipple is a proven scUM slappy. He must be on major anti-psychotic meds knowing State is getting Benenoch. Once Norman commits, expect a meltdown for the ages.

  • What a trash article.

I have never seen an article written from this perspective. I am all for creative writing, but when is the last time you saw an article about a U-M recruit written this way?

Instead of praise MSU (a local success story of late) for securing a commit from an unlikely out-of-region talent, they choose to drive down the same path they've driven the past 40 years- Deflection Avenue.

Kind of funny that even in the Damion Terry article (which was very positive), in the middle it mentions Shane Morris. I'm trying to recollect an article about a UM recruit where it dumps in a gratuitous mention of a Spartan recruit.

News/Freep believe their readership is mostly UM fans, so not surprising the articles are written this way.

  • It went from MSU is getting a 3 star who cares to now that he's blowing up there is no way they can keep his commitment now! changing their tunes now that the big boys are calling. AHHH jealousy.

Being called a sunshine blower is not insulting to me and I'm proud to be one.

This is curious to me also. When will the Freep realize a large contingent of their reading base is MSU fans? Will we ever be pandered to? When will we get to read countless fluff articles about MSU's football lore and elevated status?

I want honest journalism. I don't enjoy the sensationalism or overcoverage that ESPN provides, but it has proven to sell. This is the direction the Freep has taken.

  • Caleb, if you see this, it's what we call the Walverine "Blue Wall". Basically, the Detroit press agencies display blatant homerism (for UofM) time and again (some of this is understood due to geographic proximity). They would like nothing else but to put more pressure on you to change your commitment vs. having to compete against you. It has everything to due with getting it handed to them for 4 years in a row.

Good luck in your season and your decisions, and follow your heart wherever it takes you.

  • Exhibit A for why the 24-hour news cycle sucks. Slow news day? Publish an article that says "BREAKING: HS KIDS WANT THEIR FRIENDS TO STAY CLOSE". What a ridiculous non-story.

Edit: What's worse is that it's supported by tweets. Reporting on what some kid posts on twitter? Really?

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    SpartanRocky

  • This would never, repeat, NEVER be written about an out of state UM recruit.

  • My biggest beef is with the headline. Immediately puts MSU in a negative spin and is REALLY non-neutral.

The article however is fairly unbiased as far as I can tell. Like it or not, there is a strong push from family for Caleb to stay in Texas -- hope that MSU will overcome the odds. And it ends with some positive notes:

Benenoch said he can't wait to visit MSU, in part to show his parents why he feels so strongly about going there.

"They know that I like it a lot," Benenoch said. "They trust me."

"Tonight, we show the world what this program is made of!" -- Brian Ellerbe on Mar 4, 2000, the night of scUM's 51-point loss to MSU.

Yeah, this article should have been titled something like "Top Texas recruit can't wait to show family why he loves MSU"
