Freep article on Benenoch

  • I have a hard time believing there is open, obvious warfare against MSU in the individual texts of stories I'm reading...

... What I do believe, however, is that UM beat writers are given more "status" at the papers. There's no other reason why the Freep would have replaced Shelton with George Sippel (clearly an unskilled goon) and Detroit News would have given us a year or two of Eric Lacy (buffoon at best).

They clearly don't value their MSU reporting and it shows in the stories. (Also, the headline writing, story placement and editing is clearly done with a UM bias.)

We're lucky enough to have Rexrode covering MSU in the LSJ, because he is truly one of the most skilled, hardworking, objective college beat writers working today and I'm shocked he hasn't been elevated to "national" writer status yet. Probably doesn't want it. If it comes down to it, I'll consider subscribing to his blog... but only if they drastically cut their prices.

"Tonight, we show the world what this program is made of!" -- Brian Ellerbe on Mar 4, 2000, the night of scUM's 51-point loss to MSU.

I am inclined to believe their sophomoric and amateurish coverage of MSU (esp. compared to UM) can be considered "warfare".

MSU is a large, dynamic and globally respected university. The sports programs alone warrant better coverage from these "journalists". The fact they do not recognize this strong suggests they are UM slappies.

  • It's painfully obvious what happened here. Jabba cHoke finally got wind of Benenoch (couldn't see past the star ratings), took a look at his incoming OL class and got a massive case of buyer's remorse. Believing that letting State get the best OL recruit of either school would be an embarrassment and unexceptable, he gave the orders to the scUM lackeys at the freep to start trashing Benenoch in the hopes that they can scare him away.

Expect more and more articles like this as NSD approaches. Watch, the next one will be like "Benenoch got a C in freshman math! WILL HE EVEN QUALIFY TO PLAY???" lol
