French Canadians

  • Tanfan said...

Just go back from Mt. Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. Enjoyed the trip but found the French Canadians to be rather rude. For example, lines are irrelevant, they just walk up and pass you to get what they want. They don't say excuse me when the do this behavior. At one point, I was moving in line to go up the ski lift and this Frenchy decided he was going cut in front of the wife and kids and I saw him in the corner of my eye making a move. I immediately turned and looked in square in the eye and said, "Don't even think about trying that." When they bump into you they don't say excuse me or pardon me. Anyone else share this experience? Now, don't get me wrong, they were nice people for the most part, but certain things that our culture appreciates, like respect for a line or saying excuse me are just not practiced there. You have to be prepared for it.

They're French, what do you expect?

The last and only time I went to Quebec City, I couldn't help but be impressed with how attractive the women there were though.

But that french canadian accent makes you go limp in a heart beat. It's god awful.

  • I love French culture but they are largely irrelevant.
They became irrelevant in North America before they became irrelevant in Europe.

  • When my grandparents moved back to Michigan from Massachusetts in the mid 50s they went up through Quebec. They stopped at a diner and when they started speaking in English the entire place went silent. The waitress told them that they should probably leave before something happened to their car or them.

  • I was in Montreal back in 2001 and they drive like maniacs and they hate the English language. I went to a Mcdonalds and ordered a Big Mac and they just stared at me. Come on a Big Mac is a Universal word.

  • The province of Quebec is a foreign country inside a foreign country. Just ask the rest of Canada eh!

Per capita Montreal has the hottest women in North America. Easily true

  • I skied at Chamonix in France a few years ago and your experience sounds very familiar. Cutting in line, standing on your skis - someone smashed into my buddy & didn't even say a word.

  • Wait, so you flew all the way from Florida just to ski on an average hill and get pushed around by French Canadians? Why didn't you just go to a real mountain in Colorado or Utah or something?

I've done Colorado, Utah, Stowe. Wanted to try sumthin different. Skiing was actually pretty good. Lots of family stuff. Tubing, ice skating, etc. really beautiful topography. Cool place. Three hour direct flight.

  • I found my experience with French Canadiens was quite the opposite.

Quebec City was one of the most eclectic, diverse places I've ever been. I stayed at my buddy's house in Vieux-Québec, right in the center of the action. Most were extremely friendly, perhaps that's because we were engaging (in English and French). The women were stellar and we ended up partying several nights with randoms. They were goofy, open, and I ended up getting Smirnoff "iced" by a guy from France....it was surreal.

Everyone was all smiles from my experience and they are people I've kept in touch with years later.

Sidenote- Boréale might be the greatest beer I've ever had in my life. Unfortunately, it's not exported because they don't put preservatives in their beer.

If I can suggest...Interlaken, Switzerland might be the most beautiful place in the world. Go there.

You're like the 3rd person who's been to Quebec City, what's up with that? I've never even heard of the city let alone met anyone who's been there.

  • Yea I am sure there are plenty of stories like this but I have yet to experience it. I have been to Montreal 3 times, for a week each time, and my experiences have been great.

I find if you approach things with the right mindset it tends to go along way. Before I go I always brush up on what little French I know. I would address everyone with "Bonjour, good morning/afternoon/evening, do you speak English?" in my best French. I never had any issues. You can't just go there and speak English louder than normal and expect everyone to be happy about it. French is the official language of the province after all.

  • If you don't want to or can't get to France, Quebec City is the closest you will ever get to it.

It was founded in 1608. Lots of old architecture and great dining.
