Full Details of Nix Arrest

The counting backwards problem was probably due more to the MSU math department and not the drugs.

Probably DPS but that was my same thought.

I don't think there's anything to see here. Hell, I remember last summer you could lease a Cadillac CTS for like $230/month and that's a much nicer car. I think it's just every state of Michigan sports fan's natural reaction to look into the car after all the Fab 5 stuff.

  • Are people seriously hung up on the Dodge Charger? They give car loans to anyone with a pulse and some source of $ or cosigner. Financial terms might not be great but they are out there.

If it's registered to his mom, that's one thing. If it's registered to his Aunt, it gets pretty damn fishy. Still though, a black kid from Detroit with a single mom already makes this kinda fishy. It's not like she had a college fund for him that now because of the scholarship can be spent in other ways.....

How the fuck do you know if she had a college fund or not?

Not sure if Curmudgeon read this article or not, but I think his point about Nix not having a college fund is probably true. Around tourney time an article came out that said how his mom Delia has always worked 2 jobs and struggled to make ends meet. He also has like 5 other siblings, making it even more unlikely.

However, I agree with everyone that Curmudgeon is in large part just trying to be a racist troll. He doesnt actually know what i just posted. I don't think Nix is receiving benefits by any means. That car is not difficult to afford. Nothing dirty to see here.

Is it really racist to assume that a single mother in an area where only 11% of people have a bachelor's degree likely doesn't have a college fund for her kid?

It's just playing the numbers, that's all.

Have you ever thought of a parent saving money or working hard to improve their children's future? I am the first person in my family to graduate from college. My dad has an associates and became an exec at GM, but that was a different time. My mom worked at a Ford plant and helped me more with college then anyone. My Stepdads two daughters also graduated from college and he also worked in a factory. Some parents that work in that environment work to make the future of the children better. By helping with college costs or giving there kid some money even if they are on scholarship. That is why the whole Weber thing was stupid. He couldn't afford a cheeseburger, however his parents where saving money on not driving him to school and feeding him at home, I am sure they could have sent him some money once a month. There is also the tax money that I am sure his mom gets as he is probably still her dependent. My mom claimed me as a dependent until I graduated so I could stay on her health insurance and she would give me the money that she figured she got back in taxes because of the ability to claim me. For all you know she set aside some money, when a kid leaves for school and his food is paid for and she doesn't have to drive him all over it saves them money. Maybe she is giving him the money she is saving by having him away at school. I am sure Nix ate more then two or three hundred dollars in food a month not to mention clothing. I know my grocery bills are about two hundred dollars a month higher with my 3 year old and he doesn't eat anywhere near what Nix would eat.

  • In this day, you have to ask about the cars. I don't get why some people are getting their panties in a bunch. I will be shocked if the compliance office isn't on top of their cars. Cars should be concern #1. I don't think anyone should be worried about the truth.

Even if you get to the point it is "unlikely". That doesn't prove shit as to what the facts are in this particular case.

  • Derrick Nix is black and was driving an average car.

He probably stole it or in the very least, some white guy is paying for it. I mean, Derrick Nix is a black kid and he's from a city with lots of other black kids. No way could he or anyone he knows be able to afford an average car that many Americans drive.

You know that he also has like 5 siblings? Yeah, there's no college fund there.

5 siblings = more tax write offs, plus I am sure she gets child support. I don't know how much but I am sure she does. They didn't say she was on welfare, you are assuming an awful lot based on his race and city he grew up in. Plus kids can take out student loans even if they are on scholarship, for all we know he payed for it with that.

Well, the car isn't even registered in her name, so there's a pretty solid chance she didn't buy it. Unless she used "Barbara Pettway" to get some kind of Chrysler discount...

  • Has any one even thought that it might be a girlfriend's car or a friend's car? It's not that uncommon for college kids to lend cars out to their college friends while in school.

This doesn't mean any thing yet. I will say that Izzo may want to nip this in bud, so to speak, before it gets out of hand.

Exactly, the compliance office has to watch for side-door benefits to players and relatives. Those too young on the board to remember the accident involving Mateen Cleaves in 1996 may not know it began with reporters looking into who owned the car, which lead to the aunt of Maurice Taylor, and on it went to the Ed Martin/Fab Five scandal. Living through that period, when you read about a player involved in anything to do with a car, you can now expect someone to look into ownership if that car is new or has value. I understand why it is being questioned in this case, and given the trust that Coach Izzo has earned, I'm confident that we'll have a clear and proper answer. In the meantime, if you want to blame anyone for this thread or this level of suspicion, it's another legacy of Ed Martin and the Fab Five.......

This angle of the story is such bullshit. I wish Izzo would say, "we'll tell you why Derrick was driving that car the day every other Big Ten player is required to disclose how they got permission to drive every car they have operated over the last school year. "

  • Does anyone realize how much basketball players get as part of their scholarship? It isn't like MSU just pays their bills. They get either full room and board (i.e. dorm and meal plan) or the monetary equivalent. And athletes are also eligible for summer assistance by petition. For a standard two semester dorm and full meal plan, it costs roughly $13,000. That doesn't even include the summer assistance or their per diems ($75/day) when they are on school breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring) or on the road.

In all, a basketball player may be getting $15,000 or more on top of their tuition and books. Include summer, and you could be looking at $20,000, and it is not taxed. That is a shit ton of money for a college student, considering relatively cheap housing and food. So, driving a $300 car isn't much really. It is also why the idea of the poor athlete is a little exaggerated. The only athletes who are screwed are those in the dorms as they don't see the money, and they are forced to live in the dorms and eat in the cafs--outside per diems during break.

As far as the registered name, I would assume most college kids don't have cars registered in their name. Whether it is for insurance, better loan/lease terms or otherwise, no one is going to sell a car to a kid without a job.

Again, and again, and again.....I have not suggested, in any way, shape, or form, that there is anything to truly question here, nor have I suggested that the Izzo program is anything less than completely on the up-and-up. All I've said is that supporters of other teams will question the type of car he was driving and some reporter will explore that issue. That's it. Full stop. Period......

and all anyone else has said is who gives a flying fuck what scummers or tOSU hypocrites have to say about anything?

Actually, I'm CONVINCED that it was a girl/friend's car. I remember reading an article (re: compliance) a year or two ago about Izzo and how bad he felt that he couldn't even give Nix a ride home after an away game (after a blizzard hit that night) because it would have been in violation of the NCAA compliance rules. I wish I could find the link for this.

Also the fact that Summers and Allen had beaters tells me that, without a doubt, that MSU is clean. I know this. You know this. Frankly, most of America knows this.

And, yeah, it would suck if Izzo were to have publicly defend Nix. But getting stopped for smoking herb has now put Nix in an uneasy situation that may require (unjustly perhaps) defending himself and the program. All I am just suggesting is that it might beneficial for Izzo to kill this now before more pressure and/or more distractions prevent Nix from focusing on getting through this as unscathed as possible. This is NOT what Nix needs to focusing on at this moment.
