Actually, I'm CONVINCED that it was a girl/friend's car. I remember reading an article (re: compliance) a year or two ago about Izzo and how bad he felt that he couldn't even give Nix a ride home after an away game (after a blizzard hit that night) because it would have been in violation of the NCAA compliance rules. I wish I could find the link for this.
Also the fact that Summers and Allen had beaters tells me that, without a doubt, that MSU is clean. I know this. You know this. Frankly, most of America knows this.
And, yeah, it would suck if Izzo were to have publicly defend Nix. But getting stopped for smoking herb has now put Nix in an uneasy situation that may require (unjustly perhaps) defending himself and the program. All I am just suggesting is that it might beneficial for Izzo to kill this now before more pressure and/or more distractions prevent Nix from focusing on getting through this as unscathed as possible. This is NOT what Nix needs to focusing on at this moment.

Does anyone realize how much basketball players get as part of their scholarship? It isn't like MSU just pays their bills. They get either full room and board (i.e. dorm and meal plan) or the monetary equivalent. And athletes are also eligible for summer assistance by petition. For a standard two semester dorm and full meal plan, it costs roughly $13,000. That doesn't even include the summer assistance or their per diems ($75/day) when they are on school breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring) or on the road.
In all, a basketball player may be getting $15,000 or more on top of their tuition and books. Include summer, and you could be looking at $20,000, and it is not taxed. That is a shit ton of money for a college student, considering relatively cheap housing and food. So, driving a $300 car isn't much really. It is also why the idea of the poor athlete is a little exaggerated. The only athletes who are screwed are those in the dorms as they don't see the money, and they are forced to live in the dorms and eat in the cafs--outside per diems during break.
As far as the registered name, I would assume most college kids don't have cars registered in their name. Whether it is for insurance, better loan/lease terms or otherwise, no one is going to sell a car to a kid without a job.

So are you monitoring all fan bases to know which ones rally and which ones don't?
With the increase of message boards and other social media outlets, IMO, it seems like most fan bases will have the vocal minority that do pile on and the quieter majority that do rally around their players. It's just that the vocal minority now have different forums to voice their opinions so now we hear more from them.
Besides, I've only seen a few (vocal minority) question Nix's ride, whereas most (the quieter majority) either said nothing to see here or understand that other media outlets will look into it. But I guess cause the vocal minority is louder, to you that means the fans are piling on.

How is basic accountability piling on? I see other stuff at least inferred, so maybe you're talking about that. Impermissible benefits, however, is a big deal and people shouldn't turn a blind eye because the program is successful. Accountability and transparency is a big part of the reputation MSU has recently earned.
