Full Details of Nix Arrest

  • One Eyed Jack said...

Actually, I'm CONVINCED that it was a girl/friend's car. I remember reading an article (re: compliance) a year or two ago about Izzo and how bad he felt that he couldn't even give Nix a ride home after an away game (after a blizzard hit that night) because it would have been in violation of the NCAA compliance rules. I wish I could find the link for this.

Also the fact that Summers and Allen had beaters tells me that, without a doubt, that MSU is clean. I know this. You know this. Frankly, most of America knows this.

And, yeah, it would suck if Izzo were to have publicly defend Nix. But getting stopped for smoking herb has now put Nix in an uneasy situation that may require (unjustly perhaps) defending himself and the program. All I am just suggesting is that it might beneficial for Izzo to kill this now before more pressure and/or more distractions prevent Nix from focusing on getting through this as unscathed as possible. This is NOT what Nix needs to focusing on at this moment.

What's with all of these full of shit scenarios people are manufacturing here?

Bottom line is this. MSU has one of the best compliance staffs in the nation lead by one of the most proactive and informed athletic directors in the nation and a basketball coach that has a strong reptation for compliance to the rules and regulations of the NCAA.

They don't have to make any statement...and the idiots out there talking and making shit up aren't owed a thing from this school.

  • No one at MSU needs to defend Nix. He doesn't need defending. He screwed up, he'll do what he needs to do to make it right and Izzo will decide if he'll rejoin the team.

The car is a separate matter. He's documented driving this car and there are questions about it. If the owner of the car is a simple situation, MSU should respond to the media inquiries and end that story. If an answer will result in more questions, it would probably be best to let the media do their own leg work. If they find something, deal that info specifically. I doubt the NCAA is going to give a rat's ass unless something is uncovered. Public relations 101.

Has any one even thought that it might be a girlfriend's car or a friend's car? It's not that uncommon for college kids to lend cars out to their college friends while in school.

This is the most probable, logical, and reasonable explanation, but apparently tRCMB would rather freak out and make baseless accusations about a Spartan athlete. no

Whether it be Rather Hall, Rucker, Payne/Appling....the way MSU fans throw fellow Spartans under the bus, due in part to their sense of self righteousness, is amazing to me. Much of these "fans" are being foolishly fueled by UM fanboy trolls and media hacks.

Does anyone realize how much basketball players get as part of their scholarship? It isn't like MSU just pays their bills. They get either full room and board (i.e. dorm and meal plan) or the monetary equivalent. And athletes are also eligible for summer assistance by petition. For a standard two semester dorm and full meal plan, it costs roughly $13,000. That doesn't even include the summer assistance or their per diems ($75/day) when they are on school breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring) or on the road.

In all, a basketball player may be getting $15,000 or more on top of their tuition and books. Include summer, and you could be looking at $20,000, and it is not taxed. That is a shit ton of money for a college student, considering relatively cheap housing and food. So, driving a $300 car isn't much really. It is also why the idea of the poor athlete is a little exaggerated. The only athletes who are screwed are those in the dorms as they don't see the money, and they are forced to live in the dorms and eat in the cafs--outside per diems during break.

As far as the registered name, I would assume most college kids don't have cars registered in their name. Whether it is for insurance, better loan/lease terms or otherwise, no one is going to sell a car to a kid without a job.

But he went to (code word) Pershing!

It really is disgusting. MSU fans do more to hurt MSU than the Blue Wall, UM fans or any other perceived enemies.

  • The Walverines are already latching on to this. Just had a douche come up to me at work and say "gee, I wonder how Derrick Nix drives a nicer car than me?"

I told him its because Nix is well known to be the biggest drug dealer on campus. He didn't catch the sarcasm and said "no surprise there, I hate these hood-rat athletes"

So in the span of 30 seconds I proved this guy was both an idiot and a racist. Walverines really are the gift that keep on giving.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

Despite the success of recent years, we're still at heart a self loathing fan base. At most schools, the fans rally around their players and teams during difficult times. This one is the first to pile on.

So are you monitoring all fan bases to know which ones rally and which ones don't?

With the increase of message boards and other social media outlets, IMO, it seems like most fan bases will have the vocal minority that do pile on and the quieter majority that do rally around their players. It's just that the vocal minority now have different forums to voice their opinions so now we hear more from them.

Besides, I've only seen a few (vocal minority) question Nix's ride, whereas most (the quieter majority) either said nothing to see here or understand that other media outlets will look into it. But I guess cause the vocal minority is louder, to you that means the fans are piling on.

Fair but I've been a Spartan along time and tend to agree that our fan base piles on. Long before the internet and message boards, Spartan fans were self loathing and even a bit paranoid in my experience. Think Tanfan without the forum.

How is basic accountability piling on? I see other stuff at least inferred, so maybe you're talking about that. Impermissible benefits, however, is a big deal and people shouldn't turn a blind eye because the program is successful. Accountability and transparency is a big part of the reputation MSU has recently earned.

Let's see - in this very post you took the completely unsubstantiated leap from Derrick Nix being arrested for marijuana possession to Derrick Nix possibly receiving impermissible benefits. And you're wondering why I think MSU fans are MSU's own worst enemy??

I said nothing about his arrest.

I'm talking about the documented fact he was driving someone else's car. Who's car is that? Why is he driving it. Two very valid questions that are being asked.

My question is, who the fuck cares? I didn't own a car during college, yet I drove at least 7 or 8 cars that immediately come to mind. I borrowed them from friends and roommates to go places and run errands. Crazy idea, I know.

At some point the program and department will address the issue. Based on what Hollis said yesterday, that will happen after the legal proceedings.

You asked why I think MSU fans are our own worst enemies. The fact that you would utter the words "impermissible benefits" about one of our own players when there hasn't been even the slightest hint or allegation of such a thing taking place is Exhibit A in making my case.

When most fan bases would rally around their players during a tough time, ours are competing with the Blue Wall and UM fans to be the first to trash fellow Spartans.
