Full Freeh Penn State report released (link to report)

  • Deserves new thread.

"...total and consistent disregard by the most senior leaders of Penn State for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims."

"Mr. Paterno was made aware of the 1998 investigation of Sandusky, followed it closely, but failed to take any action."

Going to be very ugly for PSU.

Nothing wrong with judging a group of people who treat their psu football program the same way David Koresh followers treated their cult.

They know what they are enabling.

She's an adult and the nuru massage you would give her would be consensual.

And they literally did nothing with that incident. They took him at his word that nothing bad was going on. Don't forget that they tried to get him to stay on for 3 more seasons as DC after it.

  • The following statement was issued on behalf of the Paterno family through McGinn and Company, an Arlington, Va.-based public relations firm.

We are in the process of reviewing the Freeh report and will need some time before we can comment in depth on its findings and conclusions. From the moment this crisis broke, Joe Paterno supported a comprehensive, fair investigation. He always believed, as we do, that the full truth should be uncovered.

From what we have been able to assess at this time, it appears that after reviewing 3 million documents and conducting more than 400 interviews, the underlying facts as summarized in the report are almost entirely consistent with what we understood them to be. The 1998 incident was reported to law enforcement and investigated. Joe Paterno reported what he was told about the 2001 incident to Penn State authorities and he believed it would be fully investigated. The investigation also confirmed that Sandusky's retirement in 1999 was unrelated to these events.

One great risk in this situation is a replaying of events from the last 15 years or so in a way that makes it look obvious what everyone must have known and should have done. The idea that any sane, responsible adult would knowingly cover up for a child predator is impossible to accept. The far more realistic conclusion is that many people didn't fully understand what was happening and underestimated or misinterpreted events. Sandusky was a great deceiver. He fooled everyone - law enforcement, his family, coaches, players, neighbors, University officials, and everyone at Second Mile.

Joe Paterno wasn't perfect. He made mistakes and he regretted them. He is still the only leader to step forward and say that with the benefit of hindsight he wished he had done more. To think, however, that he would have protected Jerry Sandusky to avoid bad publicity is simply not realistic. If Joe Paterno had understood what Sandusky was, a fear of bad publicity would not have factored into his actions.

We appreciate the effort that was put into this investigation. The issue we have with some of the conclusions is that they represent a judgment on motives and intentions and we think this is impossible. We have said from the beginning that Joe Paterno did not know Jerry Sandusky was a child predator. Moreover, Joe Paterno never interfered with any investigation. He immediately and accurately reported the incident he was told about in 2001.

It can be argued that Joe Paterno should have gone further. He should have pushed his superiors to see that they were doing their jobs. We accept this criticism. At the same time, Joe Paterno and everyone else knew that Sandusky had been repeatedly investigated by authorities who approved his multiple adoptions and foster children. Joe Paterno mistakenly believed that investigators, law enforcement officials, University leaders and others would properly and fully investigate any issue and proceed as the facts dictated.

This didn't happen and everyone shares the responsibility.

What a convenient pile of bullshit. Screw the Paterno family. I hope the children and families that were harmed by Sandusky get every dime that Joe ever made.

My vietnamese fiance graduated from Penn State, so there's admittedly lots of that stuff around our places of residence. I have represented it from time to time being that she loves MSU too and does that for me, but I hear ya. I've put a complete stop on doing that since this crap, and she doesn't go out of her way to really talk about her allegiance to PSU anymore in casual conversation, nor does she wear as much apparel every weekend. A few months ago she said "that place (Beaver Stadium and campus) will never be the same to me" She's still proud of her education, but I think she's 100% MSU as it relates to sports at this time. I can't even imagine this happening to the school I went to, nor do I know how I'd react. Tough stuff.

  • "It is not known how Schultz learned of the incident involving Sandusky, but it is clear that he knew of it by the time he attended a meeting about it at 5:00 p.m. on May 4, 1998. In documents Schultz held confidentially in his office and that had been concealed from the Special Investigative Counsel (emphasis mine), Schultz had handwritten notes summarizing this meeting. ...

"Schultz's confidential notes dated May 4, 1998 state: a woman reported that her '11 1/2 yr old son' who had been involved with the Second Mile was taken by 'Jerry' to the football locker rooms; that taped police interview reflected 'Behavior - @ best inappropriate @ worst sexual improprieties;' the conduct was 'At min - Poor Judgment;' that Sandusky and child were in the shower, and Sandusky 'came up behind & gave him a bear hug - said he would squeeze guts out - all;' and that the boy's ten-year-old friend 'claims the same thing went on with him.' The notes conclude with the words "Critical issue - contact w genitals? Assuming same experience with the second boy? Not criminal.' "

"Schultz's confidential notes also show that sometime before 9:00 a.m. on May 5, 1998, [the University police department chief] reported to Schultz that the victim had been re-interviewed and had provided additional details about the incident and demonstrated 'on chair how Jerry hugged from back hands around abdmin (sic) & down to thighs - picked him up and held him at shower head - rinse soap out of ears.' The notes also state that ... the police interviewed second boy who reported "Similar acct. Locker room. Wrestling. Kisses on head. Hugging from behind in shower. No allegations beyond that.' Schultz's notes end with these questions: 'Is this opening of pandora's box? Other children?' "
