Two very important elements in my opinion to be a tier 1 school. 1) Good coaching including staff stability. 2) Recruiting--This is what has kept Iowa and Wisc from really getting to tier 1 and staying there. They seem to be able to rise up on 1 and 2 year intervals but slip back. Iowa and Wisc recruiting is pretty good and they both have coachign stability but they do not get as many impact recruits that the top programs get around the country. I would put MSU in this category as well. Good coaching with stablity and good recruiting but room for improvement in that area. Nebraska and PSU have the ability to recruit with UM and OSU and have done it before. Look at what PSU is doing this year with a new coach, but they do have the advantage of being in a talent rich state with little recruiting competition. Over the long haul and taking a historical perspective I think you have. On a year to year basis teams move can move up or down a teir but ultimately recruiting and coaching will dictate the order. Illinois is the most underachieving program over the last 40 years given the talent base in Illinois. But a lot of that has to do with coaching instability and facilities.

Tier 1 OSU, UM, Neb and PSU Tier 2 MSU, Iowa, Wisc Tier 3 Ill, Pur, NW Tier 4 Minny and IU.

I respectfully disagree. Michigan is not a tier above MSU. It's been years since we've even won a game versus you guys. The scoreboard is a pretty honest indicator of how good a program is. Tier 1 programs don't lose 4 straight to Tier 2 programs.

It really bothers me to listen to my fellow Michigan fans disparage MSU because we are out recruiting you guys currently. If anything, its even more of a testament to the great job Dantonio has done developing a system that works. We need to shut up and win games.

I agree that our new scoreboard is going to be very nice, in fact, Tier 1 nice. Thanks!

+1 sir. Thank you for being a rational contributor around here.

It will definitely be interesting to see how the recruiting pans out because most of Hoke's amazing all-star recruits won't see the field for another 2, maybe 3 years. Everything indicates that Hoke and his staff will be there for awhile (certainly 2-3 years to develop the current recruiting classes) so we'll see how many of those kids pan out and see where each program is at that time. Without making any predictions I think we can both agree it should be interesting to see MSU and UM develop right next to each other.

So, just 10 times in the last 30 years. When I hear teams from those schools talking about "restoring the order of the big 2 little 8" it makes me laugh. Great programs, but they haven't exactly locked it down between themselves since Reagan beat Carter.
