Georgia Tech next??

Ton of Big Ten alums here. Big Ten Pub Crawl drew nearly 2k people. Expansion is based on football and GA is #6 state for NFL talent. Coach D told me he only plays in two golf tourn with ours being one of them. Very important recruiting area, already have four players from here. Lastly, ATL top ten TV market.

once again: sweet for recruiting. Definitely agree.

However, this is about TV dollars. Just being in a big market isn't enough. Georgia dominates GT in % of college football watchers in Atlanta. I'd wager that there are more Auburn and Alabama fans in Atlanta. GT will not cause enough Atlanta residents to all of a sudden watch the B1G, and the demand for GT football is not large enough in Atlanta to force providers to put BTN in a more accessible programming tier. Rutgers makes sense because they're the largest college football following in NYC. Even though NYC is a pro-sports town, the shear number of people still makes it worthwhile. You can't make the same argument for Atlanta.

I think Clemson and FSU are the next dominoes to fall. Neither has ever been a good fit for the "tobacco road-basketball first" mentality of the ACC and both have the resources to be attractive candidates for one of the new super conferences. I'm sure both would prefer to get into the SEC, but would take an offer from any of the majors.

The rumored replacements for the ACC don't look good. UConn, East Carolina, Central or South Florida, are not going to improve the league.

As long as they have Duke and UNC, the ACC will always be major in basketball, but they are soon going to be left out in the cold in the new world of college football.

UConn is an upgrade over Maryland.....except for Field Hockey. I don't know how the ACC will survive without Terp field hockey.

  • If the B1G expands again, the preferences would be as follows (in order):
    1. University of Virgina
    2. University of North Carolina
    3. Georgia Tech
    4. Syracuse University (i.e., if you can't expand south from Md, go northeast)

    Neither fit the B1G profile.

    1) Terrible academics. Easily would be the 2 worst schools in the B1G.

    2) They offer nothing in the way of market expansion. We already have Ohio with OSU and Kentucky is not a big market.

    3) Subpar athletics do nothing to enhance the B1G brand.

We would literally lose money as a conference letting in either of them.

Rumors floating around that GT desperately wants to join the B1G too. IMHO this would be a terrible move if it happens. GT bring nothing other than good acedemics. GA market is dominated by UGA and SEC schools, they are terrible in football and basketball, and have one of the lowest student-athlete graduation rates. I also don't want to see gimmicky triple option every week

While I agree on pretty much every point ghost I'll play devils advocate here. I'm only concerned with MSU first, B1G second. We've spent tons of time recruiting Georgia and have reaped some rewards recently. Having GT should give us an even better foothold in that state, which incidentally ranks either third or fourth in recruit production. May be bullshit for the league but as I mentioned previously, could help is.

It would take a major culture shift at Texas and ND to get them to join the B1G. ND's hand could be forced if the ACC breaks up, but they could just go to the Big 12 just to spurn the B1G. Texas seems to be pretty comfortable right now, and I don't see any current Big 12 members trying to leave.

Well yes, but gotta remember, anything that helps B1G helps MSU. getting Ga Tech in would for sure our national perception more than it has now. And MSU plays in the B1G and will hurt our national perception even more. I agree that getting a foothold in GA is important, but Ga Tech sucks. Most people in GA don't even watch Ga Tech. hell I'll be surprised if 5% of the total population cheers for them. And even if they do join, do you really think we can pry away a GA kid if he has offers from UGA let alone other SEC offers? Nick Tompkins is awesome but that's 1 recruit in our class of 20 or so last year

only if UNC comes with it

I would love to grab UNC and Ga Tech. I could go watch MSU play in Chicago, NYC and ATL in one year. So much nicer than having my choices be Iowa, Nebraska, Happy Valley, etc. Atlanta market would be huge for MSU with the inroads they've made in Georgia. I only hope that Ga Tech is in our division if they join.

Syracuse and UVA offer little to nothing to the B1G.

NYC? You mean like for a November hoops game in Madison Square Garden or the new Barclays Center?

No I mean a Rutgers game in November. I'll stay in NYC and take the NEC train to Rutgers. It's like 35 minutes.

I also like an out of the box idea that might work for the 9 game schedule that a guy at work said today. Play 4 at home, 4 on the road and rotate a neutral site non-rivalry game against the other division (i.e. Rutgers v. Michigan State at MetLife stadium or Michigan State v. Maryland at RFK). Every team could have a "closer to home" neutral site.

    Michigan State - Detroit
    Michigan - Detroit
    Northwestern/Illinois - Chicago
    Purdue/Indiana - Indianapolis
    Ohio State - Cleveland/Cincy
    Penn State - Philly/Pittsburgh
    Rutgers - NYC
    Maryland - DC
Iowa/Nebraska - KC (this is the worst one, fucking Iowa and Nebraska literally have no place close to them that i'd be interested in EVER visiting)
Minnesota - bleh (the pro stadium is worse than the college one lol)
    Wisconsin - Green Bay

We already have NY market with Rutgers. Syracuse only gives us the poor areas of NY state. Buffalo, Niagra and Rochester...ever been there? fuck those places.

We already have the heavily populated areas of Va in suburban DC with Maryland. We don't need the rest of it.

Ga Tech gives us Atlanta which is BY FAR the biggest and most talented area that we can logically expand into. UNC is the biggest name and offers probably the 2nd biggest market we can get into.

Absolutely. He just added the #1 and #8 tv markets in the country.

Rank Local Market TV Homes % of US
    1 New York 7,384,340 6.47% - Rutgers
2 Los Angeles 5,613,460 4.92% - out of our region
    3 Chicago 3,484,800 3.05% - Illinois/Northwestern/Rest of B1G
    4 Philadelphia 2,949,310 2.58% - Penn State
    5 Dallas-Ft. Worth 2,588,020 2.27% - out of our region
    6 San Francisco-Oak-San Jose 2,502,030 2.19% - out of our region
7 Boston (Manchester) 2,366,690 2.07% - no school that fits
    8 Washington, DC (Hagrstwn) 2,359,160 2.07% - Maryland
    9 Atlanta 2,326,840 2.04% - Georgia Tech (hope)
    10 Houston 2,215,650 1.94% - out of our region
    11 Detroit 1,845,920 1.62 - Michigan/Michigan State
    12 Seattle-Tacoma 1,818,900 1.59% - out of our region
13 Phoenix (Prescott) 1,812,040 1.59% - out of our region
    14 Tampa-St. Pete (Sarasota) 1,806,560 1.58% - out of our region
    15 Minneapolis-St. Paul 1,728,050 1.51% - Minnesota
    16 Miami-Ft. Lauderdale 1,621,130 1.42% - out of our region
    17 Denver 1,566,460 1.37% - out of our region
    18 Cleveland-Akron (Canton) 1,485,140 1.30% - Ohio State
    19 Orlando-Daytona Bch-Melbrn 1,453,170 1.27% - out of our region
    20 Sacramnto-Stkton-Modesto 1,387,710 1.22% - out of our region
21 St. Louis 1,243,490 1.09% - Mizzou is unavailable now
22 Portland, OR 1,182,180 1.04% - out of our region
    23 Pittsburgh 1,165,740 1.02% - Penn State
    24 Raleigh-Durham (Fayetvlle) 1,150,350 1.01% - UNC? (hope)
    25 Charlotte 1,136,420 1.00% - UNC? (hope)
    26 Indianapolis 1,089,700 0.95% - Indiana/Purdue
    27 Baltimore 1,085,070 0.95% - Maryland
28 San Diego 1,075,120 0.94% - out of our region
29 Nashville 1,014,910 0.89% - Tennessee is not ever going to join the B1G.
30 Hartford & New Haven 996,550 0.87% - Not going to go after UCONN

With the addition of Rutgers and Maryland the B1G now has 10 of the top 30 TV markets in the country. They just added 10.7 million viewers to the footprint. If the B1G could somehow add GT and UNC they would add another 3 of the top 30 markets and another 4.6 million viewers to the footprint. No other schools could add over 2 million viewers unless we went way out of our region or took a team way different from the rest (BC). Obviously I think GT/ND would be the best but I don't buy ND ever in the B1G (maybe in the Big 12 if the ACC collapses).

18% are college football fans. 18% of 7 million is the biggest tv market for college football in the country. How many actually watch is totally irrelevant though. You don't understand the economics of tv contracts.
