We may have a portion of the NYC market for ad money, but not for BTN money (which is the big payday). As I explained before, BTN has negotiated deals with each major cable and satellite company. They are based on a state by state basis. For any cable company outside the big ten footprint, if a subscriber has BTN, they are only charged 10 cents per month. States inside the footprint of the big ten, that rate climbs to $1.10 per month AND BTN gets moved to basic cable in that state
Rutgers is in NJ so it doesn't add NY to the footprint. Adding Syracuse puts NY and its 7.2 million households into the footprint. If you figure 90% of households have cable or satellite, that's 6.5 million subscribers. That equates to $85.4M a year to BTN.
Remember, its not JUST about markets. It's about states.

GT message board talking/panicking about this, if you're interested. Sounds like GT fans grudgingly want to join the B1G, for stability if nothing else. They also show some love for MSU in there.
I say take GT if you can get it. World-class academics, good football program with great history, huge TV market-all that matters-, great if not elite basketball program, etc.

Atlanta is filled with transplants from all over the south. For college sports, heavily dominated by Alabama, Auburn, UGA, and Florida fans. GT probably counts for 10-15% of college football watchers in Atlanta, I would guess based on what football saturdays look like on/near campus.

Read my posts about why the TV market argument is shit.
Great/elite basketball program? Are you kidding? Maybe 25 years ago. While I was there, students got in free to basketball games. They won 11 games last year. Making the tournament is a big deal. You got in free to football games too, if you just went to the football front office on the monday morning before each game. I got to the stadium an hour early against rival Clemson for a nationally televised night game... and I was the first person there. That is a normal occurrence at GT.
GT is a Northwestern clone. If we really want that, then fine, but lets stop looking at a girl who is a clear 6 and telling everyone she's a 9.

You are right. It is by cable provider. But the cable provider knew thst BTN was going to be more poplar in some parts of the country over others. BTN originally wanted to be on basic cable across the country for a flat fee of $1.10 per subscriber each month. The cable companies didn't want to agree to that because of the unbalanced geographic interest in the network. The compromise deal was to have the $1.10 per month rate for each subscriber in states in the big ten footprint with BTN on basic cable. Outside the footprint, subscribers had to buy a special package to get BTN and the fee was only $.10 a month per subscriber.
I wasn't implying that state governments were involved.

This may be, but everything that I've heard is that negotiations vary between cable providers, by individual markets (not just state by state), and will likely be re-negotiated on a continual basis if the conference would expand.
Example: If KU or Mizzou were added, these contracts would include parts of both Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO...but not necessarily both of KS or MO respectively.
The BIG would be short sighted to expand based on adding $1 per subscriber, based on a 2008 contract.

Pssst! It's not about the media this time...it's about expanding the recruiting base of the conference.
