Getting Tired of Always Drinking - Turn in Man Card?

  • Every party, every gathering, every event, every moment. It is getting so it doesn't have to happen on the weekends, it just has to happen. Even if the night starts out at the school or at the church or at the golf course it always seems to have to end at the bar or at their house having a drink.

I never thought I would get tired of it, but I am getting tired of it. Am I the only guy that is slowing losing interest in alcohol?

I will be 52 in a little more than a month. I have spent my entire 9-5 life in Corporate America. I also run my own business as well. Alcohol used to be the universal lubricant. Now it is just becoming universal.

Sounds like you are getting tired of events. I pretty much cut out drinking unless it is a Friday or Saturday. Try sitting a craft brew at home on the weekends. Good shit. If it was not for craft brews and some red wines I would not drink at all.

  • It sounds like you're not drinking the right type. Keystone will bring back your love for alcohol. Don't worry. I was sick of drinking for one weekend, but then I realized I was just sick of spending too much money on Bud Light, so I had to cut back. Try that out. rockon

And you'd have to take a minute or two to change your avatar. So you have that to consider.

This guy is tired of drinking. He's at the wise old age of 21? 22?

Try drinking something other than 10 bud lights on a Thursday or getting smashed every weekend.

Things will change as you get older.

I find myself less tolerant for the bar scene compared to how I once was. I don't go out for St. Patty's Day, the crowds annoy me. I avoid bars where there will be a bunch of college kids on certain nights.

Today i golfed, had about 6 beers over the 18 holes. Came home after, I'm sitting on my deck and smoking a cigar with a beer in my other hand. The fireflies are just starting to come out and they are all over my backyard. As I type this, I am at piece, enjoying the silence, and I realize I have to cut my grass tomorrow.

When you get older, you will figure it out as we all do. I rocked it hard while at MSU, and to a degree after. There comes a time where you can't do it anymore, and your body will tell you when it's time.

I guess that is my point. I am getting older and no longer find comfort in it. It might be the recent drunk driving slaughter...the Holt kids, the Jackass guy, the never ending stories of lives lost. Life is so precious that when I see it get snuffed out so easily due to alcohol, I question it in myself.

I was at an open house yesterday for a high school graduate and all the adults were slowly but surely getting tanked. Again. At a kids open house...

    A curmudgeon I have become.

  • I will always believe that there is nothing wrong with drinking, but more and more often I see people who have set getting drunk as the end goal for the night. That, at my age, to me is pathetic. If I am out with friends, doing whatever, and I end up drinking too much and having fun, that's great, but I will never ever say to myself something like, "I'm getting so wasted tonight!" It leads me to believe that there are way too many 35+ year olds who still haven't learned to let go of the party party party mindset of college.

    Always Smooth.

52? I'm 56, and it happened to me about 25 years ago. I still love a cold beer after a hot September football game. But, that's about it. I drink, maybe, about once a month or so, and then maybe 2-4 beers. I can't remember the last time I drank a lot. Really, it's not "fun" anymore. Fun is waking up feeling good on a beautiful morning--like today.

  • I just cant take the hangover the next day anymore. Even just drinking a few beers is terrible. I guess I'm just getting old.

  • I'm 27 and I'm ready to settle down. Sick of the bar scene. I'd rather drink a nice six pack with an awesome meal and just hang.

There's a toilet in the kitchen!

    Itoclown

  • I drink because I enjoy the taste and yes, I use it as a drug to unwind. Getting drunk? Not a fan. The idea of being hungover is not in the equation - having three small kids at home doesn't help. The exception is tailgating at MSU on Saturdays - the more I drink, the more I rev up section 1 and the team plays better. That's just being a good Spartan.

    BH Spartan

  • I've transitioned from getting absolutely shitty on cheap beer to being able to appreciate a nicer beer and do it in moderation.

I can still put them back, just not like I used to and I'm okay with that.

Everything in moderation. Drink for taste, not to "get tanked". The comfort in it, for me, is having a beer or two while I grill and I leave it at that. Drunk people annoy me as well, and I'm not going to be that guy. There is nothing curmudgeon about being a responsible adult. I thank God every day that the dumb shit I did when I was younger didn't rob me of the chance to see my kids grow up, to coach their basketball teams, or drive them anywhere without having to blow into a breathalyzer.
