I've been thinking about Gholston's future in the NFL. Could he play OLB in the 3-4 defense? It seems that versatile defensive ends are very valuable at the next level.

Well, he's essentially Mario Williams part II right now. It worked O.K. when they moved to the 3-4 (before he was injured), but he (and Gholston) are really 4-3 DEs.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I was standing next to Gholston in the Library yesterday. He is every bit of 6'7 275 and he is most likely going to kill someone this year.

He seems like a grounded person and a team player; really neat to get that sense from a stud player who is going to be talked about a lot. I can't wait to watch this guy live and then again for replays on the video boards at Spartan Stadium!

Question for the experts: do you think we are in less of a need of a defensive leader this year to direct the team? Since the entire defense was so young last year, they needed Bullough to tell the front 7 what to do, and Robinson to lead the back 4. But looking at some of Gholston's comments, they ALL understand their assignments for each play since they are no longer a young defense, but a very experienced one. Not saying we don't need leadership, but won't need as much direction from others.

Should be interesting with Gholston likely to play a bit of LB Saturday. He was incredibly impressive there in high school as a very raw talent, and I'm still surprised he's been able to thrive at a totally new position this early in his career. Not one to run wild with future predictions, but i honestly think he has the talent to be a top 10 pick in the draft.

Definitely the kid is a beast and this defense is going to be ferocious.
He gets the double teams this year that Jerel took last year. Someone else is going to be open- Rush, White or the LB on his side Flying Denicos???
Big Will is certainly going to be a high pick- I don't think the Georgia game was a fluke, but more a sign of things to come. Damn imagine how good we could be with this kid in 2013! Oh well bring on the next stud Coach D!

While I like the idea of seeing Will SOME at LB, I dont want to see it become habit.
Rush End is one of the 4 "franchise" positions in the NFL and one of the positions that gets PAID! If you are building a team around D, you build it around your rush ends and corners. In order for Will to get paid at LB, they will ask the same questions they do about the kid from Boston College right now. Beast, heck of a football player, but you dont pay a linebacker (or even take one in the first round) if there is no film of him running in coverage.
I get the fact that we have some great DL players and playing Gholston at LB is a way to get another DL on the field, but you can bet your you know what, that when Will is at LB, he is rushing the QB.
I guess long story short, Gholston at LB would be a nice change of pace, but his future is as a rush end for sure!
