Ghost stories/Haunted Houses in Michigan

  • Well since I did start this thread I guess I better add my own story.

I and four other friends rented a house on Stoddard Street (between E. Grand River and Albert) our junior year at MSU. The house was set a slight distance back than the other houses as I recall. It was a two story house with three rooms upstairs. Shortly after moving in we all experienced things missing (text books, note books, calculators) that we all attributed to someone among us playing a joke. The items would eventually turn up but often times in the oddest places.

One night I awoke to the sound of a very eerie, and labored breathing that seemed to be coming from outside my room, on the outside of the house. As noted the rooms were all upstairs, and two of the bedrooms had access to the roof the covered a portion of the first floor. I just figured it was my housemates screwing with me and making noise. I got up and crept to the window expecting to surprise whoever it was, but to my surprise there was no one outside. The sound become more intense and I was getting really pissed at whoever was making the noise because it was the middle of the night and I was tired and just wanted to sleep. In my frustration I opened the door to my room and shouted at the top of my lungs, "Quit F#CKING with me!" Quickly my other housemates came out of their rooms, but the breathing sound continued, and every one of us heard it.

The guys I shared the house with were all hunters and we had an assortment of weapons, so we grabbed what we had and headed out into the backyard of the house thinking we would either catch the culprit or discover a raccoon or some other animal making the noise. There was nothing.

When we all re-entered the house the breathing sound was still quite audible, and as we headed back up the stairs the breathing sound suddenly stopped. We never discovered what it was but we all decided that this sound plus each of us having experienced things missing and eventually showing up in places we would have never left those items (inside the oven or refrigerator, on window sills in different rooms etc.) that the house was haunted and then affectionately gave it the name, Stoddard Street Ghost. Strange things continued throughout the year we lived there and again we attributed it to some unknown entity.

Okay, I tell you that story to set up this one.

The summer after our junior year I and two of the other housemates remained at MSU to take summer classes. It was fourth of July weekend and myself and one of the other guys went home to spend the holiday with our families. The lone remaining housemate stayed in East Lansing as he had a job at a local store and had to work. This is the story he told after we returned that weekend. He had finished working his shift on Friday night/Saturday morning and got home around 3 AM. He had already made arrangements with another friend to go out to one of the local bars Saturday night. He told his friend that he would leave the front door unlocked so that he could let himself in because he probably would still be sleeping until after noon that day. At some point my housemate was awoke to the sound of the front door opening. Thinking that it was his friend he didn't feel the need to get up and acknowledge his presence. He then heard the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs. He heard the doorknob to his room rattle and the door slowly open. Thinking that it was his friend who was going to scare his awake he decided to act as if he was still asleep and try and do the opposite. He could hear the footsteps approach his bed before they stopped and he could feel the corner of the bed sink as if someone was sitting on the edge. He waited a second or two before he quickly rolled over and shouted. There was no one there, but he said he could clearly see the indentation as if someone was still sitting on the edge of his bed. He said he exited the room and quickly ran down the stairs. He waited downstairs until his friend arrived later that afternoon before venturing back upstairs.
He said the experience really freaked him out.

In the two years I lived in that house I can honestly say that I experienced the same exact dream while I was asleep of being run over by a car. This dream occurred approximately the same month each time (August) and resulted in me sustaining bumps and bruises on my arms, legs and chest as if I had been hit by something.

Alright, I'll bite. I have two stories, both of which I remember vividly and still creep me out to think about. I'm sure my stories will be mocked by the people that don't believe in that stuff, but I swear by them. For the record, I've never been an overly strong believer in ghosts.

One night, when I was maybe like 8 or 9, a buddy and I were playing upstairs in my house. Playing explorer or something, we decided to leave all the lights off in the upstairs and go explore. We walked down the hall, exploring all the rooms in the dark. Its a long hallway with a slight turn at the end that leads to a bathroom and the final bedroom. The bathroom has a skylight in it. We rounded the corner and there was a huge dog laying in the doorway of the bathroom. The moonlight shining thru the skylight made it perfectly visible to us. Enormous black dog. Laying there with its paws crossed, its head laying on its paws. Looked like an overgrown Rottweiler. Vicious looking mofo. Didn't really react to our presence. Shifted its head slightly and glanced at us and that was it. Eyes were the deepest black I'd ever seen with a hint of red. My buddy and I took off, hauling ass downstairs to where my parents were, almost tripping over my dog (which confirmed that it wasn't my dog that we saw in the bathroom). We both remember it vividly and discuss it from time to time. Both swear by the story. Not sure why we saw a dog, but there are stories of others seeing these "hellhounds". Doesn't sound like the scariest story when I write it out, but it still freaks me out to this day. The upstairs is a balcony that overlooks the main living room. As you enter the front door, you can look up and straight down the turned part of the hall leading to that bathroom. To this day, looking up at that hallway is still the first thing I do when I walk in the house. I'm convinced I will see that thing just staring at me.

Story 2: One night, probably age 13 or 14, I was laying downstairs watching TV at about 2 am or so. The couch is set up so I can see the TV, or roll over and look into the kitchen which has a door leading into the living room. I'm watching TV and roll over. I'm just staring blankly into the kitchen, thinking about whatever, when a man walks into the kitchen from the living room. He walked, almost gliding (like the runners in NCAA 12 where they are doing the running motion but are more or less gliding across the field). The man walked over to the table we have in the kitchen and looked down at something on the table. Creeped out, and in hopes that it was just my dad, I said "uhmm...dad?". The man abruptly looked up, as if startled by me, then vanished. I freaked the fuck out. I didn't tell anyone about it. A few weeks later I got home from school and was talking to my mom. She was telling me how just a few minutes earlier she thought she saw a ghost. She was in the kitchen cooking when she said she felt like someone was behind her. She said she turned around just in time to see a man basically glide out of the kitchen into the living room. She followed him out the door and by the time she turned the corner, he was no longer there. This creeped me out because it essentially confirmed my encounter with whoever the heck this guy was. I haven't seen him since, nor has my mom as far as I know. But that was seriously freaky.

Also, I hate when dogs are laying there at night and suddenly perk up real quick and stare intently into the dark. It scares the living shit outta me. Makes you wonder what is right there that we cannot see.

Frankly, it's probably something they can hear either far away/really quiet or at a frequency we don't pick up so well.

  • I posted this on the old board. I'll type it up again. You guys will think I'm crazy but I've told enough people now that I don't really care. Here goes...

    First encounter:

I was about 18 and living with my sister (no pics d-bags). I was laying on the couch asleep and it was the middle of the night. At this time I was a bit depressed with my life. I didn't know what I was doing with it after graduating high school and just taking some classes at OCC. Anyhow, I'm laying there when I suddenly awake. My back is to the TV which is off and no lights on in the house. The only light is coming in from the back sliding glass door. I turn around and look up. Above me is standing a black figure without much of a shape. Just kind of a black hood with a darker face that I can't make out. Around its head are these black orbs kind of circling. It was about as tall as the ceiling. I get a terrified feeling, scaredest I've ever been. Nothing has come close to the feeling I had then. I am not a religious guy. I will sometimes attend church with my parents if they make me. At this time I was extremely unreligious. I immediately start praying even though I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm just saying, "please God help" over and over. After about 2 seconds, the thing shoots away. The orbs shoot off and it follows. Craziest shit I've ever experienced. I went upstairs to the bathroom and put the lights on. There were double mirrors in there so I could see behind myself.

What is really weird about this story was that a couple of days before my sister was getting all religious and stuff. She was marrying a Catholic so of course she had to convert. I told her I was giving up religion for Lent and just messing with her about God/religion/Christianity all that. I asked Minnie what it may have been and she told me it could be a "shadow person". I looked them up and the all black/hood thing that other people have described is exactly what I saw. There are tons of people out there that claim to have seen the same thing. I was shocked.

    Second encounter:

I was sleeping at my sister's house but at this time I was now going to MSU. It was winter break. I was again sleeping on the couch when I woke up. Above me were two old people just looking at me. No expressions on their face, if anything they looked confused. I wasn't necessarily scared, just kind of staring back at them. They were surrounded in a pinkish light. After about 5 seconds they just vanished. After that I got kinda freaked out but I wasn't terrified or anything.

Fast forward until last Christmas. My sister and her husband were selling that same house and moved into a new one. One of the things they found out during this process (I don't know how) was that an old couple used to own a ton of property out in Clarkston (where the house is) and they had died like 100 years ago. They were legitimately buried just a little ways down from their house. I haven't looked up what those people look like but I am pretty sure I saw them.

Disclaimer: I'm not a crazy wacko Christian guy. I just now believe their may be something beyond this world that maybe science and religion can't quite explain. People may think I'm crazy but I just can't explain both of those things.

  • How do we know if any of these ghosts or good or evil? That's my biggest concern.

I watched this documentary once about ghosts and hunting them and these 4 ghost hunters were in the New York Public Library and saw a ghost. It looked nice at first but then when they approached it, it turned really scary and like blew them back with this like supernatural wind stuff. It looked pretty terrifying on the file footage they used.

Do you own an unlicenced nuclear accellerator? Cuz if not I think it's important to know whether these shadow people are malevolent demons or time travelors/aliens otherwise you're powerless to stop them.

I also saw this documentary about this kid who almost got killed by an airplane engine but got out of his house just in time. Then traveled back through a wormhole from an alternate time line and when he got back the people from the alternate timeline that didn't know each other in the main timeline appeared to vaguely recognize each other, so maybe the shadow people, if they are time travellers are like that and if you ever saw them you might vauguely recognize them?

    We need answers.

  • 1960's . July between 3rd and 4th grade. 20 year old male cousin stays home while the rest of the family takes the week to go "Up North". The family leaves on Saturday. Sunday morning we are driving to church and my mom say we should stop by and see if Sam wants to ride with us. My dad says if he want to go to church he'll drive himself. No reason for us to bother him.

Rest of the day is the typical hot MI summer Sunday. Come home from church, Sunday dinner, listen to Tiger game. Around 7:00 (pre 60 minutes) the folks took my sister and I out for ice cream. Got home about 8:00 and we hear the phone ringing. I go to race to pick it up and my mother tell me that she'll get it. She picks up the phone and my cousin's older sister who had joined the family for the first 2 days is screaming "Auntie, Auntie, Sam killed himself" You could hear it 30 feet away.

The next week is a blur with his family getting contacted and getting home and the funeral. A week later my cousins asked if I could stay at their house with them.

The 2nd day there I open the door to go to the basement and shoot some pool. I see my dead cousin Sam at the bottom of the steps laying on his back. Scared shitless, I slammed the door and told my cousins what I had seen. They didn't laugh at me. They didn't say anything except "Just don't go into the basement" .

Following day I stay away from the basement. I wake up early a couple days later and leave the bedroom while my cousins are still sleeping. I walk to the end of the hall and before I turn right into the kitchen I look left into the livingroom and see my dead cousin Sam sitting on the couch leaning over a coffee table with his elbows on his knees reading an opened Scientific American magazine. I beat feet back to wake my cousins and they won't even leave the bedroom to come out and look.

My mom called to ask how things were going I told her about seeing Sam at the bottom of the steps, what he was wearing and she cut me off. About an hour later she calls and tells me to get packed, my dad would be picking up me and my cousins because we were going to my grandmother's cottage. I later tried to talk to my folks and Mom told me I was just seeing things.

10 years later, I'm a HS senior when my mom dies from cancer. (In a hospital) About 3 months after she passed my dad and I were going through family photos. We came across pictures of my long dead cousin Sam. That's when I first heard they suspected he had committed suicide after a fight with his mother because he wanted to go away to college, she wanted him at a junior college and stay at home. It was kept a family secret.

It was then when my father told me that the reason why my mom had been in such a hurry to get me out of there was on that Sunday night when she and my dad beat the police to the house they had found my cousin Sam laying at the bottom of the steps like he was sleeping. The only people who had seen my dead cousin were his sister, her boyfriend, my folks and the police. I had given a too accurate description of what he was wearing and how they found him although I hadn't gone to the house until 72 hours after his body was taken away and no one had ever talked about how he was found. He added that one of my cousins had also seen Sam in the living room as I had and they had been told by my aunt and uncle to tell no one.

My aunt and uncle stayed in the house for another 20 years, my oldest cousin went backk to school, graduated from college got married 10 months later. The youngest cousin got married at 17 and left home and the other enlisted weeks after graduating from HS. All gone within 30 months and as soon as they could go. I never went into that basement unless there were other living people down there ever again.

    ps
Have never seen mom after her death or my father after he died 15 years ago.

  • Memorial Day weekend. 1992. Spring term. I just came back early from a canoe trip because I was having a pretty bad "drug experience" and the dorms were pretty empty. I lived on 6 West Holmes. There was no one on the floor...not the sister or brother floor. I had a room pretty close to the elevator. It was about 3:00am...I wake up to what sounds like a lady crying. So I go to open my door, and I notice that the hallway lights are off. You all that lived in the dorms know you can't turn those off. So...it's pitch black in the hallway except for the light from my door and the elevator area. But the light in the elevator area is intermittent. So I take five steps towards the fire door leading to the elevator and I notice the light in the elevator lobby is also turned off, but the elevator door repeatedly opens and closes (hence the intermittent light). I went to turn the knob of the fire door and all of the sudden it got really cold...I FREAKED and ran back to my room, locked the door. Sat in the corner of my room until the sun came up. This was easily the most I've ever been creeped out.

I've heard other stories about that floor and the West side elevators, but I've never heard of anybody dying there or anything like that.
