Give me your top 5 dunks in MSU bball history

Magic's dunk in the 1979 Finals. It was on the cover of SI and is iconic.

This is by far the best dunk in MSU hoops history.

  • So many great dunks in MSU history. We have had some extremely freakish athletes in our history. People are forgetting the dunk that JRich had off a missed free throw his freshman year. Think it was against Carolina? Him and Brown were seriously the greatest Dunkers at MSU. They threw it down with authority. They also represented the NBA well with their dunking ability. JRich was challenging Jordan's record.

It was "in your face disgrace" during one of the greatest games in Basketball History.

Im with you on this one.

JRich vs the Globetrotters was a great dunk as well

I'm shocked the ref didn't call him for something on this one.

    Ref: TWEEET!!!
    Izzo: What's the call?
Ref: I don't know, but you just shouldn't be able to do that to another team.

  • From one column recalling the MSU's dunk-a-thon in practice before the '79 semi final.

"Rohan (NYT writer) pointed to the tunnel where Pennsylvania was watching while waiting its turn on the floor. ”If I’m coaching, I’d get them out of there right now,” Rohan said. “They don’t need to see that.”

Tough to trim it down to 5 as there are so many great MSU dunks over the years to choose from. Leaving off Mo Pete over Ken Johnson was a tough decision. That and J. Rich's reverse putback might be a tie for #5 imo. Anyways, I tried to go for dunks that were not only spectacular, but played a meaningful part in big games.

    5. 2000 - J. Rich's put back reverse slam vs Zona. This wasn't a big game like the rest on my list, but man if it wasn't the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

    4. 2005 - Mo Ager over JJ Redick in the Sweet 16. How did that taste JJ?

    3. 1979 - Berkovic's dunk off the opening tip vs ND in the Elite 8. This really set the tone early for the epic beatdown of Digger's boys, who were the biggest obstacle en route to the title.

    2. 2009 - Summers over Robinson at Ford Field. No explanation needed here.

    1. 2000 - Mo Pete's alley oop from Mateen vs ISU in the Elite 8. This dunk sealed the victory vs ISU, who was the toughest remaining team in the field. From that moment I KNEW without a doubt we'd take it all.

Perfect list....the only one I "might" put in there is Mopete's dunk at home against OSU over Ken Johnson. That was ridiclious. '99 I believe?

  • The 1979 dunk by Kelser against Illinois at Jenison.

If there's any video evidence to support this, all bets are off as to this being the most incredible dunk in MSU program history. What made it so amazing was Magic's pinpoint friggin' BEHIND THE BACK alley-ooop pass from MIDCOURT to a skyrocketing Kelser for the backboard rattling dunk. I remember it as a kid thinking "What the hell did I just see?"

Magic & Kelser were to college basketball in the 70's what the electric guitar was to rock and roll in the 50s...way ahead of their time.

    Im literally [lol-ing out loud]

I forgot about this one. damndamndamn. Such cool memories from those years.

I love these new kids, and especially the team this year, but these young pups have no idea what they missed back in our day.

  • As far as degree of difficulty, nobody can touch the JRich vs. Arizona dunk. That is the ridiculous. Andy H's highiight video has great footage of this dunk. If measured by pure dunking prowess, JRich stands alone with probably the 5 best dunks.

My personal fave though is Peterson over Ken Johnson. I sat under that hoop and am in the highlight. Mo Pete has such an "FU" look on his face from about half court that the whole world, even Ken Johnson knew what was coming. By the way, for you young ones, Ken Johnson was the leading shot blocker in the country that year.

  • Anybody have the JRich video on the putback vs Indiana? That's one of my favorites.

MoPete over Johnson was awesome. I remember thinking "He's not going to go at Johnson, is he?" "Oh, Damn, Johnson just ate some leather!!!"

There was one alley-oop JRich had vs Wisconsin at home (Must have been 2000). I think he was 2 feet above the backboard when he grabbed it. Was simply in awe of how high he could get up.......and he made that dunk look easy.

  • Dawson's windmill was awesome.

Between him and Harris, MSU will have some nasty dunks next year.

Got to get Mo Pete over Ken Johnson. There was so much hype about Johnson being the best shot blocker in the country and one of the best in a generation and Pete took it right at him.

I was at that game and I have never heard Breslin louder.

Love the little arm shinny at the end by mopete

It's not what Izzo, Dantonio and Hollis are accomplishing, its the way they are accomplishing it

  • I think my top 5 would all involve Magic somewhere around half court to Kelser at the rim.

I think my next 5 would all involve Mateen somewhere around half court to Peterson at the rim.

I think the breakaway dunks are great, but there's nothing like an alley oop out of nowhere to let the other team know that you own them.

Wasn't a big game but Shannon Brown's dunk against Stanford back in 04 at the Palace was crazy.

Ah, the silver unis. I loved them and can't say I know all that many that feel the same.
