Golf Vacation Recommendations in/near Michigan

  • some different options.....
could try the Grand Rapids area...I have golfed Pilgrims Run and Saskatoon most recently..Pilgrims is dry ( no booze) but that was a couple years ago, very nice course; Saskatoon has 4 9 hole courses, very nice all distinct..stayed at a buddys house so I cant comment on stay and play...but many other upper scale courses in the area....also could try the Oscoda Area.... althought I did not go, a buddy of mine did a golf package up there..I think Lakewood Golf ( 4 courses) and said it was just fantastic.... most others would say the Traverse City area or the Grayling/Gaylord area i.e. Tree Tops. Any of those you cant go wrong.

  • They are building a 24 unit hotel at Forest Dunes this summer. Eventually it will be open only to members and those who stay on the property.

Agree with these. I've done golf trips to Treetops, Boyne, and Shanty Creek. All three were very nice, but in terms of quality Treetops was probably equal to Boyne (if you play bay harbor)

  • So many great options. Treetops, Boyne Highlands (I love the Ross Memorial), Shanty Creek, Bay Harbor and others. A good option is to stay in Traverse City and play Lochenheath, drive up to Charlevoix and play Belvedere or any number of great courses in the area. Out of the box option is Lakewood Shores in Oscoda. Closer than the other options and the Gailes is as close as you can get in Michigan to true Links golf. The Blackshire course there is really nice too and you aren't too far from Red Hawk. Also less expensive than the west side tracks. They have on site housing.

  • I'm a college kid, so me and a couple other buddies did a cheap one to a-ga-ming last june. Paid 200 bucks a person for 4 rounds and 2 nights through lessonongolf.com.

  • on an unrelated note

got the chance to play the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island near Charleston, SC (site of this year's PGA Championship) back in December. Course was absolutely breathtaking but by far the toughest course I have ever played.

wind was easily blowing 30 MPH off the Atlantic

  • A-Ga-Ming is a good trip. We did a weekend trip there after having a wedding there a few weeks before, good times. Also Hawks Eye is a nice course.

My answer is to stay in Petoskey and play Bay Harbor, True North and the Boyne Highlands Heather and Arthur Hills.

Footnotes: True North is now private this year. If you play Bay Harbor, try and play Links and Quarry if you are given that option.

  • Richland (Kalamazoo) and play the courses owned by the Scott family. They own 5 courses all a short distance from their motel or stay in their condo.'s .All are resonable in price and always in great condition.

  • Great suggestions already (True North, Bay Harbor, Black Lake, Arcadia Bluffs). Couple more: El Dorado (Cadillac, MI) and Little Traverse Bay. Might check out Hidden River as well. Fun course.

  • You can get onto Point O' Woods if you rent a house on the property. One of the great old CC's in MI. Place is frozen in time, mid-1950's
    Unfortunately not 1950's prices.

If you're a mid-handicapper and just want to golf your brains out for 2-4 days Garland fits the bill. They have decent packages and 4 courses. Park the car and never leave.

Bay Harbor is a little overrated. The Links 9 is fantastic. The other two I could skip.
When did True North become private? I played it in the fall and there was no mention of it.

They have new owners. Found out about it at the Novi Golf Show. Their web site indicates the same thing.

You are referring to the Gull Lake View Resort and golf courses. For years we've had a group going there in the spring for a golf weekend. The Gull Lake courses are decent, with a number of quirky holes. The Stonehenge North and South courses are excellent as is Bedford Valley. Very good rates and nice townhouses.

    Thrillho

  • Crystal Mountain. They have lodging and a couple different courses there, and there are a lot of good ones close by. Arcadia Bluffs isn't far from there.

    ROtown Sparty

  • Rent a house or a condo somewhere up there in or near TC or Petoskey, maybe on the water. Torch I guess could work, too. Day trip to play golf in the morning. Head back afterwards for drinks/water/sun/nightlife.

    Knibb High football rules

    WhiteBoyHatcher

  • Stay at Boyne Highlands, you have 4 courses right there, Several more in Petosky or Harbor Springs, Little Traverse Bay, Bay Harbor, Birchwood Farms.

How much do you want to play a day ? Playing 36 gets tough by the end of August as the days get shorter. Cutting down on drive time between courses is good way to make that happen. It can be tough to make the 1;00 pm tee time when the morning round is delayed by rain.

Have you ever played Lochenheath? Looks interesting every time I drive past it. Not sure if they'll make it.

  • I'm looking at shanty creek...they have a three day unlimited package with a nice suite. Any thoughts on shanty creek?

I'd hit Treetops or one of the Boynes for an unlimited play before I'd go to Shanty. If you go to Treetops, tell Rick I said hi.
