why do you say that? nicer?

From a straight golf perspective (on an unlimited play package), I'd go with Treetops. You can play a Fazio course, and a Jones course (which can be brutal). Rick Smith's Signature course is pretty nice, they have another (Traditions) course, and you can do the Par 3 for fun.

Edit: It's been awhile since I've played up north, so I'll defer to anyone that has better knowledge of recent playing conditions at the courses. I've always preferred Boyne Highlands to the Mountain. Don't have a ton of experience with Schuss/Shanty.

Have you ever played Lochenheath? Looks interesting every time I drive past it. Not sure if they'll make it.

I played Lochenheath some years ago when it first opened and before it became private (now public again). It's an outstanding course. I don't know the conditioning these days which may have suffered due to their precarious financial situation.

Unfortunately some of these high end courses are having a tough time the last 3-4 years. High Pointe down the street from Lochenheath and Grand Traverse closed a few years ago. It was a wonderful lay of the land course and was the first by the now famous designer Tom Doak.

I've played the Summit course which is nothing fancy and the Cedar River course which is outstanding. The Legend looks great.

I think Treetops has a better variety of courses and my favorite is the Smith Signature by a small amount over the Fazio and Jones courses. The Tradition is just that, walkable and interesting. The Par 3 course is great fun.

Boyne Highlands is my favorite of the 3 resorts as I love the Ross Memorial. I haven't played the Hills but the Heather is a northern Michigan classic.

Treetops has more elevation changes than the other two resorts with Boyne Highlands being the flattest if that matters at all.
