Golf question. How much will an equipment upgrade help my score?

I bought new clubs last year after over 25 years using the same irons. Perhaps a new driver but it really is the clubber and not the club. Save money on the clubs and get a few lessons.

Lessons? Oh man, I don't know. I was shooting upper 70s and was desperate to hit par just once so I went and saw a pro for a few lessons. That effed me up... got me thinking about things I never did before and totally messed up my while-not-perfect-pretty-consistent swing. I haven't golfed the same since (it's probably a mental thing now). I would suggest if someone is comfortable with their swing, avoid the lessons.

I still think it is absurd that people honestly think a new clubs wouldn't help the OP. He said his woods were fit in 1988. Look at this info graphic and then tell me that upgrading won't help him a ton.

They said nice things about the old drivers, too.

No doubt it will help, but only occasionally do those extra 15 yards or so translate to saving a stroke. Where it might help most is in the confidence aspect of using up to date equipment.

I'll even gladly say that I would personally update my bag in that situation, but definitely not under the illusion that it would make a major impact on my handicap.

Distance is probably the least of the advancements in the last 20 years that would help the average golfer. It's the difference in forgiveness that makes the biggest difference. Hit a 1988 driver slightly off the sweet spot and you're screwed. Hit a 2012 driver slightly off and you'll likely end up in decent shape. Same goes for irons. Your average duffer gets saved repeatedly during a round by technology that bails them out.
