Got into the Michigan State Honors College!

  • I lived in Mason my first two years. I thought it was a great dorm. Not cookie cutter, had great RAs, and it was small enough to meet nearly everyone. I met many/most of my best friends those first two years in that dorm.

  • Go for Rather, get a buspass and suck up the extra commute time. Lived in Rather my freshman year and it was the time of my life. Thousands of freshman all together. Best way to meet both friends and "romantic interests."

Sorry if we sent you into panic mode.

JMC student body breakdown is something like this: 75% cool, regular kids. Play videogames, watch sports, party, toss the football around, etc. The rest are either nerdy, socially awkward, or both. They exist in relatively small numbers... but are much more noticeable than the normal people. They give JMC kids a weird reputation.

Case Hall is mostly JMC kids. A small minority of which are in the Honors College. It's really not hard to meet non-JMC/HC kids. It's a huge campus and you'll be taking non-JMC classes too. You'll have plenty of opportunities to meet people. And when the people you hang out with meet people, they'll sort of mingle into your circle of friends. Just find a group of close friends you mesh with. It's not hard at all. Your friends from freshman year will most likely be your closest friends throughout college. For a lot of people, the kids on your floor freshman year are they people you'll be drinking with while wearing caps and gowns 4 years later.

Good luck! If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help.

    Thank you!

Now I have options for housing. If I am looking to go into Business, what dorms do you suggest I choose as my 1st, 2nd and 3rd options? The choices are Case, Mason, Rather, Snyder-Phillips, or Yakely-Gilchrist.

    Any help?

Congrats from a really old Alum of the Honors College! I would never have been able to afford college if it wasn't for the MSU Honors program.

30 years after I graduated, my Son also was accepted into the Honors College. He majored in Economics which, at the time, was part of Broad. I don't know if that is still true (he graduated in 2003).

He lived in Armstrong for 2 years; and loved it. My advice is to get a bus pass for the winter and either walk or get a bike for fall and spring. I recently visited the new Brody cafeteria; and its unbelievable!

One recommendation my kid would give you is to choose elective courses that are taught by the best profs no matter what your major. For example, Ballard in Econ. He didn't find Honors to be difficult; and it absolutely was a benefit to have the Honors College listed on his resume.

He and I will always be grateful to the Honors program in that neither of us had any debt on graduation. Great great program!
