Grades: 2012 NFL Draft (CBS Sportsline)

  • Grades for spartan2's

No. 51: Packers select: Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State Grade A
I love this selection. Ted Thompson gets it. Moving up to get Worthy to fill a spot that was a trouble spot when Cullen Jenkins left is a good move.

No. 102: Redskins select: Kirk Cousins, QB, Michigan State Grade C
Cousins is an accurate with good leadership and intangibles, but it's tough to see him developing into a plus starter due to his limited arm strength and athleticism. He's the polar opposite of RGIII and seems like the Redskins are drafting a clipboard guy.

No. 121: Texans select: Keshawn Martin, WR, Michigan State Grade B
Martin is an explosive player and can beat corners with speed and a near 40-inch vertical leap. He won't give the Texans much as a blocker or a threat over the middle, but could develop into a real downfield weapon to complement all-around stud WR Andre Johnson.

No. 180: 49ers select: Trenton Robinson, FS, Michigan State Grade C-
An undersized safety who can play centerfield and is a reasonable tackler, but who isn't likely to push for a starting role and lacks the quickness to drop down and cover the slot.

No. 183: Dolphins select: B.J. Cunningham, WR, Michigan State Grade B+
Cunningham won't burn you, but he's a smart and polished route-runner who excels at finding holes in zones and will also block downfield. The Dolphins need a world of help at wideout, so Cunningham could see some early playing time.

No. 250: Chargers select: Edwin Baker, RB, Michigan State Grade B
The Chargers lost Mike Tolbert in the offseason, and replace him with a somewhat similar guy in Baker. He's a hard runner between the tackles and a willing blocker but won't threaten Ryan Mathews for too many carries.

  • "Limited arm strength....." BS Cousins can throw the ball down field with accuracy and speed, proved it in games and at the combine. Hell, most of the scouts were saying they were surprosed by his arm, said it was better than Wilson. Something else is amiss.

I noticed that too. I was like WTF all these scouts were surprised by his arm strength and that is all they talked about at the Senior Bowl. Guess that is why he is a columnist and not a scout.

That's what kills me. His arm graded out better at every event than Osweiler, Weeden, etc., Every time you see someone talk about those guys it's all about their big arms, but they were all limp throwers in comparison.

I think it is was either that he is too smart or too religious, or a combination of both. Coachs in the league hate super smart guys.

He's going to replace Jacoby Jones, the Texans' current PR/KR/speed guy who just can't seem to stay healthy (hasn't for the last 2-3 years). The Texans are going to love Keshawn and will use his versatility well. Great landing spot for him.

  • And the Lions:

No. 23: Lions select: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa Grade A
This is a good pick. They need to replace Jeff Backus. This kid fell and they landed a need pick.

No. 54: Lions select: Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma Grade D
This is risk. He is coming off a bad knee injury and he wasn't a burner before the injury.

No. 85: Lions select: Dwight Bentley, CB, La.-Lafayette Grade B
The Lions need corners and this is a value pick. He is a former teammate of Janoris Jenkins in high school and does a nice job in man coverage. Good pick.

No. 125: Lions select: Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma Grade B-
Lewis is strong against the run on the edge and can defeat blocks to stop ball-carriers while providing reasonable pass-rush through tireless effort. How he'll fit in the Lions' 4-3 scheme is a bit of a question mark - hopefully he won't be woefully miscast at SLB the way Julian Peterson was.

No. 138: Lions select: Tahir Whitehead, OLB, Temple Grade C
He's athletically limited but a solid tackler who uses his arms well to defeat blocks but gets lost in coverage. The Lions could use him in tandem with Justin Durant, who plays the pass well and the run shoddily.

No. 148: Lions select: Chris Greenwood, CB, Albion Grade C-
The Lions roll the dice on a small-school prospect that no one knows all that much about. Seems like a better gamble in the sixth or seventh than here.

No. 196: Lions select: Jonte Green, CB, New Mexico State Grade C-
The Lions may have raided Area 51 for this pick. He's small, green, from New Mexico and no one seems to have any information about him whatsoever.

No. 223: Lions select: Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma Grade A-
Lewis showed great awareness and pursuit ability during his time in Norman, and stands a good chance of contributing as an outside backer and on special teams for Detroit.

  • So Kirk gets a C, but Osweiler gets a B+ ("In five years, he will be a good, quality starter") and Foles a B. whatev.

    oh, and....

No. 82: Titans select: Mike Martin, DT, Michigan Grade A
I love this pick. What a tough, feisty guy. He doesn't back down. He doesn't have the size you like, but he is a former wrestler who plays like it.

Osweiler will be an admiral in a submarine before he's a "good quality starter" in the NFL.

The grade isn't so much about the player as it is about the pick. If Cousins had gone in place of Foles they probably would've called it an A-.

  • The C for Cousins is because they already picked RG3, as I read it.

The rest of the analysis seems to be from somebody who has never seen him throw.

A lot of these guys use this information second hand, which is sometimes not even coming from a scout or coach... Take for example the "knock" on worthy for taking plays off... The guys who actually sat down and watched film said they never saw it, but it became the sexy analysis, even though there was no proof to back it up. Imo, todd mcshay is the worst in this regard, he will watch one or two plays, never put any context to it then perpetuate that from the beginning of the senior season on through the draft... Ala the "greg jones is not athletic" drivel he loved to spout.

  • Arm strength is negated when you throw off your back foot under pressure in the pocket.

I have no doubt it is something Kirk can fix, but it is a bad habit that he has struggled to break. That said, other posters are right when they said the grade has more to do with who did the selecting...it was a baffling pick for the Skins. He should have gone to Denver, just like Worthy. The Broncos are officially dead to me.

Yep. Fuck the Broncos and may they go to Hell for eternity. They singlehandidly fucked Worthy and Cousins in this draft. I hope Peyton takes one in the back on the first play and they need to play with that fucking draft pick. That is all.

  • Martin will have the most productive season of ANY of our draft picks: Worthy will be solid for sure, but Schaub and Kubiak will LOVE what Keshawn can do in the slot: he'll catch 40+ balls for about 600 yards in that offense and also provides an element of surprise with his arm. I said before the draft he should go in the 3rd but would probably be a steal in the 4th.....Texan fans have no idea what they just got.

    Who wrote that?

Julian Peterson miscast as a SLB?

Justin Durant bad vs the run but plays pass well? (reverse is true).

Julian Peterson would have fit in well as a 3-4 OLB, not a 4-3 OLB, who sometimes plays DE.

The Cousins grade was completely accurate, because the only team that would have been a worse fit long-term for Kirk was the Colts. Also, Redskins were really limited in draft picks, so drafting Kirk actually hurt them. The only reason the pick isn't an F is because he was the last 2nd tier QB to be picked, when a lot of people had him ranked as the 2nd best one after Weeden.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the Robinson evaluation. Robinson can play centerfield, but he played a ton in the slot over his 4 years, and did it pretty well. He is a hard-hitter too, but he is not the most reliable tackler. SF doesn't have a lot of depth at safety, so it was a good value pick.
