Greatest RPG's ever

  • I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 7 and in my opinion it should be credited with the rise to popularity of RPGs as that was not a popular genre until the wide acceptance and popularity of FF7.

There was a series of games on Sega called King's Field and it had some offshoots such as Dark Tower and Eternal Ring.

King's Field was the first 1st-person perspective game that I played, and my friend and I really had a great time trying to figure out how to advance in King's Field 2.

  • In the spirit of the thread title, I would choose Final Fantasy 7 as the greatest RPG ever citing its success and profitability that led to the popularity and expansion of the genre.

Ultima IV for the PC is one of the toughest, most rewarding RPGs there is. I downloaded a flash version a couple of years ago and still find time to play in the winter.

Ogre Battle & Ogre Battle 64 are pretty damn good too.

Sweet. I'll have to look it up. I LOVED Ultima III--spent hundreds of hours playing that.

  • Played all of the games in this thread. Just finished Dragon Age II and I think it is right up there with any of them. Takes a while to get used to the interface but after you do it's a really well balanced game where, unlike Skyrim, it's hard to gain an unfair advantage.

    Don't post poop!

Oh, I'm not dogging it; FF6 was a sweet game. I actually like FF4 better, because it was slightly simpler (no need to "equip" magic via Espers or Materia like in 6 and 7 respectively) and the characters came and left as the story progressed. Though from pretty much FF6 on you could customize your party, I like that you actually permanently lost characters (I think 5 of characters you have "die" at some point lol) and only had access to certain abilities at certain times. Plus the main character was in his 30's/early 40's and undergoes a complete transformation from being a bad dude to a good one, complete with a character make-over and brand new abilities.

FF6 was fun, because it was just so BIG, especially for the SNES. The 2nd half was a little too free-form, though it was kind of fun to "get the band back together".

As far as stories go, FF4, 6, 7 and 10 had great stories. 12 was an MMORPG disguised as a single-player adventure. I do admit that I found the gameplay to be a ton of fun once I figured out the gambit system, though I spent so much time on the sidequests (hunts), that I'd often forget who the characters in the story were lol. Just finished FFXIII . . . . story kinda sucked quite frankly. Visually stunning, paradigm system was engaging, but man, I loved these games for the stories. Found 13's story to be lacking, though maybe 13-2 will build on it successfully.

12 has one of the best stories in my opinion but, as you said, can be diluted with all the side quests. Basch was a badass and Balthier had the whole Han Solo thing going for him. As for 13-2 seems kinda dumb. Replacing Lightning with here sister and Snow also missing just doesn't seem like it will be that good. What I'm really looking forward to is Final Fantay Versus 13.

Dragon age 3 sounds like it's going to be good from what theyv'e said thus far which isn't much. Though I wont be buying it as I am boycotting Bioware

  • It may not be the best and certainly not the most challenging but the most fun for me was always Super Mario RPG. I've played it (and beaten it) more than any other game. I also loved Chrono Trigger.

    Formerly Blade Runner.

I haven't played many RPGs since the rise of MMORPGs.

I really loved Shining in the Darkness, which I believe was the predecessor to Shining Force 1 and 2.

Dark Wizard from Sega CD was also a favorite, although more of a turn-based RPG.

Yes, shining in the darkness is the predassesor to shing force 1, 2, and 3

Sega really destroyed the 2 greatest things they had. Shining force, to this day, is worshiped by gamers but sega went and took away the turn based strategy RPGs making the games first person hackers.

If they made a new one along the lines of SF II or phantasy star IV, I'd buy a new system just to play that game. Especially a new Shining Force 2, god I've played that game hundreds of times

FF13-2 was actually ok for awhile if you forget some the stupidity. The ending was terrible however.

I imagine it was better than 10-2 though. God that game was such an abomination. I did like the whole dressphere thing, but other than that...

i bought the sega collection for my ps3 and was really surprised to see shining in teh darkness on it. Been enjoying playing through some of the old games.

By the way cause i missed this.

huge props to the guy that mentioned phantasy star 4. phantasy star 1,2,4 were some of the best rpgs ever imo. 3 was terrible. But phantasy star 4 was such an epic epic game... even if the hero was like 18

never played 10-2 beyond the intro. I liked the combat system in 13 although I've always been a atb type person i like having control over what each party member does.

We've got our NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS2, and intellevision hooked up right now and are going to start playing through our games. I'm looking forward to a lot of them.

Lunar: The Silver Star on Sega CD and Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete on PSX were great. As were the 'eternal blue' sequals.

  • Super Mario RPG? One of the best games of all time. Obviously Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross; FF VI, IX, XII as well. The music in CT, CC and FF VI was incredible. Knights of the Old Republic II had great potential. Unfortunately it was rushed out the door too fast by the publisher and the\ game suffered. Story was amazing for most of the game.

Overrated? FFVII- Story had a lot of plot holes, needed quite a bit of polish, maybe it was just a poor translation. Music was its only saving grace, great soundtrack. Gameplay was alright, a step back from FFVI IMO.

Yeah, that was lame. I think The Last Hope is a prequel though. Just forget III ever happened :)

The story started making no sense in KHII as well. I loved the combat system but the story got really tangled. With all the spin-off games and such I don't know how KHIII will pull it together story-wise. Hopefully it works out.
