Greatest RPG's ever

The story started making no sense in KHII as well. I loved the combat system but the story got really tangled. With all the spin-off games and such I don't know how KHIII will pull it together story-wise. Hopefully it works out.

A lot of the story happens in all the DS and PSP games. KHIII might be really hard to follow since I haven't worried about any of them.

  • I had forgotten about the Lunar series.

I remember how much I liked that company, Working Designs, and some of the games that they put out.

They did the Arc the Lad series, which were awesome. They didn't have anything on FF: Tactics or Ogre Tactics, but still fun nonetheless.

  • Man, I always thought it was pretty universal that FF2 (for SNES) was the best ever. I stand corrected. I think FF2 was the last RPG I ever played through.

  • Some not mentioned: Deus Ex (original), Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The original Fallout, Divine Divinity, Icewind Dale, and Nox. Played them all, and all were very good. Then, there was Dungeon Master and Black Crypt on the Amiga. Both excellent. Dungeon Master, while at times tedious, was one of the all time classics.

They were a good company - put a lot of TLC into their games/translations.. pretty good sense of humor as I recall too.

Yea, it didn't know if it was supposed to be a platform hack n' slasher, or a true RPG. Now, I'm a big fan of Devil May Cry, but KH just got caught between genre's. I played the first 2 games; I had to read the synopsis of the "in between" story to make 2 make sense lol

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Dude, I'm with you. I played it for the first time when I was 9; I had no idea what I was doing except holding down "A" to get through battles. That got me . . . not far.

Since then I've played it through probably 10 times. Every couple of years I'll dust it off; it still feels like a huge game. Great story, btw.

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV There's the wiki; apparently it's widely considered not only one of the best RPGs of all time, but one of the best games, on any system. Wow.

  • It's a great game. But RPGs are generally considered the greatest games of any counsel

    Sega - phantasy star
Genesis - shining force / herzog zwei
Snes - secret if mana / legend of Zelda / Cronos trigger
    Ps - final fantasy VI
    Nes - final fantasy II

    Get my point

I once wrote a book report in middle school loosely based on the events up until the meeting of Tellah. The teacher had no clue it wasn't a book.

herzog zwei! I thought I was the only person aware of that game, haha. More of a strategy then an RPG though, in my opinion.

Herzog zwei is a strategy game. But it is considered one of the best games genesis ever did along with the phantasy stars and the shining force series

  • I never could tolerate Japanese RPG's. Here are my favorites:

    Fallout original
    Fallout FPS's
    Balder's Gate 1&2
    Everquest
    Skyrim, Morrowind, Oblivion
    Planescape:Torment
Gold Box AD&D games (yea, they're pretty damn Nerdy)
    City of Heroes
Mass Effect 1&2 (have not played 3)

There are a ton of games with RPG qualities I like, such as Baseball Stars (NES), Zeldas, Crystalis -- I like any game that let's you develop a character

    Wizardry? Ultima? Bard's Tale? biggrin

Ultima IV and V plus Bard's Tale I and II for me. Not the greatest of all time, but awesome to play. Might and Magic, too.

Does anyone here remember a game called Deathlord? Came out a little after the time Bard's Tale/Ultima was popular. Deathlord rocked, and was surprisingly difficult for its time. It used to auto-save at random moments, usually during or right before your entire party got waxed.

    1. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
    2. Morrowind
    3. Pools of Radiance - graphics were ghetto as all f but still fun to play
    4. FF VII
    5. Utlima IV

  • True story. Though doesn't, I believe, fall into that category. Still fun, where the google eyed turn-based games bore me. Give me one or the other, but not both

Great collection. And, another vote for Planescape: Torment. Freaking awesome game. Tons of reading, but an amazing storyline.

  • serious quesiton: RPG = Role Playing Game correct? I always assumed this meant things like Dungeons and Dragons and other non virtual games where there were complicated set ups, protocols, characters each participant inhabited, and scenarios they had to navigate. so that has transferred to game systems too?

Yes i'm an old fart. I played D&D in Junior High for a couple of years with my brother and his friends in the early 80s. it was fun but not really my thing. I did, however, love a game called Top Secret that a few buddies and I would play in high school once in a while. if nothing was going on that weekend we'd load up on Jolt cola, cheetos, and various other snacks and play all night. it was a james bond kind of thing. and it kicked ass. Anyone remember it?

DD&D games were more strategy games wrapped around fantasy characters. True computer-based RPGs were very literal in that the games had story arcs and character development--along with a good dose of strategy based combat. To me, the best of the RPG games were the Baulder's Gate series. They had amazing depth featuring excellent stories, difficult combat, great musical scores, excellent graphics, and a huge variety of character development options. One game could take a couple hundred hours. Quite a difference to the 15 hour FPS of today.

  • Played Shining Force 2 back in the day on the Sega Channel. Thought it was pretty good.

For PS2, I thought King's Quest VIII was a good game. The only one in the series that I've played.

For the PC, I liked Darkstone.

I've said it a hundred times

Shining Force 2 is the best game I've ever played. There is so much going for that game.

That said, there are some who argue that it is not a true RPG, its a strategy game. But the character development makes it an RPG to me
