The outside shooting of this team has been a problem for years and it seems that players in the system, with a very few exceptins (Suton, Green) shoot worse and worse from the outside than they did when they came here. Ager, Allen, Summers.. now Appling as well. I think I know what is going on compared to previous years and it is missing the guy that is now behind the bench at IU. Crean was an expert on teaching shooting and working with guards and it shows with his product at IU this year....ability of guys to dribble drive AND bury jump shots... Spartans? haven't seen much to give me confidence in that area this year or previous years as well.

Don't get me wrong ..wouldn't trade Izzo for the world and there is a LOT that he developes with his players both on and OFF the court.. and that is something to be proud of...but developing shooters does not seem to be his forte....we've suffered in that department ever since Crean and Gregory left.

    Someone, PLEASE, make it stop.

Oh now you want FACTS to get in the way of a good Rocky....er "FortWayneDave" rant?

But they do shoot worse.....(than they did when they were playing in HS against smaller, slower and much less athletic opponents)

I have to admit I was in the 10% for a long time as to whose schtick/alter ego FWD is.

I actually met FortWayneDave at the BTCG in Indy. He did not rant then. I had to imagine that after the game he did ;)

So Appling's shot has gotten worse from last year to this year because Crean is at IU?

No...just saying that outside shooting is not something that seems to be taken care of here.. and that Crean left a void that was not filled by replacing him with Montgomery in years past and doesn't seem to be being fixed this year either. Shooting percentage of the team is pretty outstanding when you think about it given that the outside shooting by most of the team has been bad and Nix and others go through spasms making bunnies sometimes. So my frustration is not with the way runs the offense..but that how many decent shots they outright miss game after fame. I'd be shocked if this teams shooting percentage on jump shots was over 40 % this year.. would not be surprised if it was closer to 30 than 40 too... I don't know. just speculating. It would be one thing if this was a difficult task that other teams struggled with but I've seen game after game on TV where even mediocre teams, with deficiencies elsewhere, do not seem to have major problems hitting open jumpers, uncontested jumpers etc. It is the one thing that I think this program lacks that frustratingly keeps them from truly climbing into the "elite" class. Just look at Duke, and other of the perineal top squads.. ..year after year they recruit and get shooters.....Izzo by contrast loves to get "football" types. Don't get me wrong. they have their place too.. .but Damn I'd love to see the team have a real shooter/gunner with each recruiting class.

  • MSU is shooting just over 35% from 3.
That's not great but right about the national average and 5th in the Big Ten
Kansas is shooting the same %.
