Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar on Jerel Worthy

  • It's a podcast, I can't tell you exactly where it is (I'm not getting a minute/second reading), but it comes in after a lot of discussion of LB/DE draft prospects. Really, really good stuff on Jerel, especially on the "takes plays off" criticism.

Farrar says, "My overriding impression of him is this guy is a constant pain in the ass. He might not always get there, but he's always taking a double-team, he's always penetrating. Like in the movie Apocalypta where they call the guy 'Almost,' I wanted to call him 'Almost,' because he's always 'almost' there. He always seems to be in the play."

Cosell says, "I watched a number of games on Worthy, and the knock on him apparently had been that he doesn't play hard all the time, and in the games I watched, I didn't see that. This guy is pretty athletic, by the way. He's got natural athleticism, he's got quick feet, he's got agility, he didn't move like a 300-pound man, you really can't teach the kind of movement he has. He certainly needs work versus double teams, his quickness advantage was clearly negated. I would say despite his excellent movement he's not a strong pass rusher at this point. But for the most part, you saw the natural quickness and you saw the hand quickness, too. I don't know where he gets drafted, I think he's got the skill set to be a quality starting D tackle in this league. I think he's got plus athleticism. I think he could play 3 technique, I think he could play 1 technique as well, he could theoretically play nose tackle, as well. He could play a number of positions."

Nice to hear neutral observers looking at Jerel the same way I do.

Hmmm -- not sure the link will work. Let's try it here: http://media25.podbean.com/pb/7987bc598d2f86652bb3ad48c87a2cdc/4f9190e8/blogs25/329295/uploads/GregCosell41912.mp3

Has there been any word on Joel Foreman's draft stock? Foreman gave us 4 years of stellar effort -- would really like to see the big guy get paid!

I've seen/heard nothing about him, but then I haven't really considered him draft-worthy, so to speak, and thus haven't paid any attention to the analyses of offensive linemen in the draft.

I wouldn't be surprised if Joel ended up on a team's roster, but I would be surprised (pleasantly so, obviously) if he were drafted.

Edit: Dan Pompei (a fairly respected NFL writer), for one, disagrees with me: "14. Joel Foreman, Michigan State, 6-4, 315: His size is what should get him drafted. Foreman also has solid intangibles and was a producer over a long period of time against good competition. He is not the most athletic or powerful blocker, however."

NFL draft preview: Guards - Chicago Tribune

Fifth in a series exploring the April 26-28 NFL draft. Next: Tight ends. Waistlines aside, this is a thin class of guard. It is possible no guard will be selected in the first round, and only two

I believe this too (disbelieving the people that say he takes plays off). If you take a play off in that position, you will wind up standing back with the linebackers. I wish I knew where/when this sentiment started.

It's the criticism often dished out by draft "experts" when they can't really find huge weaknesses in a guy's game. For WR's, it's better route running or better hands, and so on.

Yep. I'd give good money to know where this started, and in what game. I've not seen it. They may be talking about conditioning, and specifically, 4th quarter conditioning, but when Jerel's in the game, you pretty much now it.

"Almost." lol I like the nick.

    Foreman is done with football.

Where did you hear that/how do you know? Not saying you're wrong, just that Pompei's article is less than a week old, and he's got Foreman in it.

Can't remember where i read it, but he's going into criminal justice. He walks with a cane outside of football because of how beat up his body is. Rexrode confirmed this in his last weekly chat

I don't remember where, but I've heard this as well.

I think the toll the game has taken on his body was cited as the reason.

  • I think the media's criticisms of Jerel are not on par with the leagues criticisms and he will be solidly in the 1st round.

I didn't even know the media was saying this about him. It's fucking absurd. The dude was a wrecking machine all year long. In fact, even in the last weeks of the season, the game commentators were touting how awesome he was and how he was a first-rounder for sure. Now all of a sudden they back-track and say the opposite? Puh-lease.

I think they were looking for an excuse to drop him after a "poor" Combine performance, and after Dontari Poe ripped it up -- after performing mediocrely on a CUSA team.

They wanted to elevate Poe, and needed a reason to drop Jerel, IMHO. That's the schtick they came up with.

Nice to see people actually watching the tape say, "Uh, no, he's great."

  • FWIW I have also heard Foreman is done. That's why we haven't read or seen anything about him. As far as I know he's not doing anything to pursue a career in the NFL because he spent most of his college time injured (even when playing) and his body has just had enough. Can't blame him. He was a great Spartan.

If that's official, we need a thread dedicated to thanking him. Last season was special, and he's a huge reason why. He's a true Spartan -- a warrior to the end. That kind of sacrifice should not go unrecognized!

I am so F*****G tired of the "takes plays off/motor questions" BS with Worthy.

Here is what we have. A guy, who EVERYBODY knows is the best and most important player on the DL. He gets routinely double teamed, and in the B1G (Konz, Molk, etc) you are talking about 620+ lbs of future NFL guys at least every other play slamming into you. When he fails to dominate every single play, they slap the takes plays off tag on him.

Then, you have a guy like Poe. He was fairly pedestrian in a crap conference. Didn't have the game tape or the numbers. But, get to the combine in shorts and Underarmour T and he dominates...against nobody. Thin air. And they all want Poe.

Worthy will slip. He will end up in Baltimore/NE/etc. Teams that know what to do with a talent like this. And he will thrive. Mark. My. Words. Poe will go to some team like Carolina and be the next workout warrior bust.

  • I already miss Jerel. That motherfucker was unstoppable when he needed to be. Whoever takes him will get a long-time starter, pro-bowl caliber DT. Mark it down.

I doubt Carolina takes him, highly doubt it. If they go DT, it probably wont be until the 2nd round at the earliest, unless an opportunity too good to pass comes up. I don't get where you think Carolina takes workout warriors from?

Peter King (and some other folks, I forget who) have Worthy going to GB in the 1st round. no Someone -- again, forget who -- was talking about flipping him to a DE in a 3-4, which made no sense in the world to me, but whatever.

If you listen to the podcast about Poe, Cosell and Farrar pretty much agree that he was poorly coached, and that if he gets someone like Dick LeBeau (or a few other names I've forgotten) to coach him, all the potential in the world was there. An interesting take, that also accounted for the "underwear warrior" tag people threw on him after seeing his Combine numbers and then looking at his college production.

As a Packers fan, I would jizz in my pants if GB was able to draft Jerel.
