GREG WILLIAMS/SAINTS DEFENSIVE MEETING JANUARY 13, 2012 Above is a 4 minute sample from the 12 minutes I recorded during the New Orleans Saints defensive, conducted by Greg Williams, meeting in San Francisco on Jan. 13th, 2012. This was edited for time but you can listen to it in it's entirety by going to, www.theusof.com and choosing "The Blog" in the drop down menu and clicking the link on the right under Resources.

  • How is that Peyton guy able to hire the interim when he's suspended for the year? I'm hoping the commissioner adds another year for violating the suspension...if that's indeed what he's done.

Because he appealed the suspension. I think while on appeal, the suspension is not in effect.

The Rock's biography has a pretty good chapter about what the Miami lockerroom was like. This stuff has been happening for a long time. Think the Steel Curtain players didn't talk like this? I think they are overblowing all of this. Football is a rough game. It's not Pop Warner.

Anyone who chastises the Saints but loves MSU's defense is a hypocrite. What about Kill Bubba Kill?

    Further pussification of society.

I think the difference is that nobody chanted "kill Bubba kill" while actually meaning "kill" and offering Bubba money to do so. Listening to that audio, there was little difference between it and what I heard in high school football. Heck, I had a HS football coach tell me to spear an opposing running back in a pile as he was ripping us to shreds. He meant it; I did it; he screamed in pain; I'm still embarrassed by it. No flag, just for the record. The difference with the Saints is the tough talk and analogy became literal, with cash to back it up. "Let's get into Gore's head and let him know where there" became "I'll give you $500 if you hit Gore in the head." In a professional game where people make their livings, you can't have a team running around paying people to injure their opponents. Yes, war is the language of football. Paying people bounties for their head and ACL hunting activities is not.......

I am sure this has been happening forever, but I don't think it should. There is no way a coach should be encouraging injuring players through hits to the head, or twisting ankles, or whatever. There is nothing wrong with being tough, but playing dirty is not good.

Why do you have to agree with dirty play to like MSUs defense? I want to see hard hits, if there is an injury because of it too bad. I don't want to see helmet or ankle twisting though. It is like a boxing match, who does not like a brutal KO? Does that person then have to like a low blow or a cheap shot after the bell?

  • Funny thing is, the OL and offense in general for the saints admitted to playing dirty against det in the first game in order to try to get det to retaliate, so you can bet the O got a similar pep talk.

Idontno. I'm fine with everything except when they say to go after Crabtree's ACL. Everything else isn't that bad, mainly football talk IMO.

Huh? ACL injuries occur from cutting quickly, not getting hit, unless it's a total knee blowout and those are totally random events.

All he was saying is that Crabtree is a giant primadonna pussy, who refuses to play through pain or fear, all of which is true, so hit him low and hit him hard because there's a good chance he goes crying to the sideline afraid to get hit.

Every coach and player (and fantasy footballer) knows the other teams injuries and goes at them. This is such a hypocritical non-story. It's football... You want a real story, how about how every player is so juiced up on HGH and steroids they've become a bunch of Incredible Hulks out there, and the league is allowing the players to postpone testing over and over that testing is basically off the table.

You want less injuries and brain dead QBs? Strip the opposing defense of their chemicals not their pep talks or token chump change rewards.

There are two MAJOR things wrong with what Williams was saying:
    1) I'm fine with 90% of what he says. It's all Knute Rockne, fire up the boys stuff. It's the 10% when he talks about going at guys ACL's, twisting guys ankles in the pile, and going after the head of a guy that's had concussion issues. That's what is getting him in trouble.
    2) You have to remember, he says all of this AFTER the NFL has already done a preliminary investigation, He know's it, and he knows they are still investigating him and the team for purposely injuring players. It is just beyond stupid.
So, he's wrong in #1, and stupid in #2, and going through life wrong and stupid is not good.

Grrrrrr. I never thought I'd get over the '98 debacle when the Vikes blew home field advantage and were upset by the Falcons. That was the most difficult game to ever get over as a Vikings fan. Until now. The loss to the Saints was even more painful, IMO. That game was dominated by the Vikings. 31-15 first downs. 475-257 total yards (165-68 rush and 310-180 pass), and time of possession was 37 minutes to 26. The Saints won one category - and won it big. Turnovers was 5-1. I vividly remember that game and thought the officials needed to throw more flags for late hits - specifically on Favre. The one I remember most was when he was hit high and low (remember, this was when the emphasis with the "Brady rule" was in effect) and threw an int. The official just looked at it and no flag. It reulted in a interception for the Saints. Had the flag been thrown, it would've been first and ten at the Saints 15 yd line. You can see I am still not over that!!
