Has MSU ever had Four 5 star basketball starters before?

  • It's funny seeing Draymond and Chris Hill all the way at the bottom shows what little value the star systems have. It's crazy how well Draymond has worked out.

  • They are pointless. I'd take Chris Hill's carrer over Kevin Torburg any day.

Kelvin Torbert didn't have a bad career at all. He was MSU's premier defender over the last couple of years that he was there. Unfortunately, his injuries really affected him early on. Chris Hill started off strong and fell victim to the Spartan Senior Slump.

Just for reference with 5 stars

    2012 Gary Harris

    2011 Branden Dawson

    2010 Adreian Payne

    2008 Delvon Roe

    2004 Marquise Gray

    2003 Shannon Brown

    2002 Paul Davis

    2000 Marcus Taylor Zach Randolph

It's crazy when you compare to this:

    2012
    Alex Poythress
    Archie Goodwin

    2011
    Anthony Davis
    Mike Gilchrist
    Marquis Teague
    Kyle Wiltjer

    2010
    Brandon Knight
    Terrance Jones
Enes Kanter (Didn't ever really play)
    Doron Lamb

    2009
    John Wall
    Demarcus Cousins
    Daniel Orton
    Eric Bledsoe

Then there was pre-Calipari was much more aligned with how real recruiting goes.

For reference, here is the list of RSCI top 100 players in the Izzo era.

(The Izzo era and the RSCI era are pretty much perfectly lined up)

Shocked Wolfe was rated so high.

Interesting to see it laid out like this. Obviously there is some correlation between ranking and NBA/professional productivity, but it we ranked everybody on college production, there is going to be very little correlation to the rankings.

If Wolfe hadn't blown out his knee, he would've been an All-American candidate. Unfortunately his senior season was ripped away from him. Same thing happened to Adam Ballinger. That's how we ended up starting 2 or 3 freshmen in.. 2002 is it? Has that been a decade already?

What about the Flintstones....did they even have national rankings back in those days? I can't find 'em.

There were individual recruiting services, but no RSCI as far as I know.

Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

  • I think Kolferd Tolbein is a good man. Not on the level of a Drew Naymick, but quite close.

Closest might have been 2000-2001 with Randolph, Taylor, and J-Rich...but Randolph only started 8 games.

Yes, and IFIRC Charlie Bell would have been a high four star had star ratings been popular in 1997. Don't recall seeing Andre Hutson rated as highly.

Could you imagine if Taylor and Randolph had stuck around. Even now, it still is something I think about sometimes. Just think about that 2003-2004 team and what could have been.

    STARTERS
    C- Davis SO
    PF- Randolph SR
    G- Hill SR
    G- Brown FR
    PG- Taylor SR

    BENCH
    Torbert
    Anderson
    Ager
    Andreas
    Bograkos
    Rowley
    Namick
    Johnson

A little lacking in depth up front, but man...what are starting 5! Oh well...wishes in one hand and crap in the other. See which one fills up first, right?

Can't really predict what would have happened with Lorbek. He had a great tournament run and a couple good games during the season. I can't remember the circumstances at the end of the season that got him a lot of minutes though. If you look, he went from about 9-14 minutes a game to 20.

One of my favorite plays was during the tournament. I forget which game. Lorbek acts like he's running down court after MSU scored. He then cuts back right as the other team makes the in-bounds pass, steals it and lays it in. Love that guy.

That's not evidence that the star system has "little value." That's evidence that there are exceptions to the rule.
