Hipsters: More hijinx and counter culture insanity

  • Finally got my new bike so I'm hanging around the bike store while dude putting my bike together I asked about a bike (with no suspension) and guy said "yeah that's the new trend, rigid on trail 100, no suspension" lol

Guy is a total hipster. So now the hipsters are riding the trails on bikes w/o suspension lol have fun with that

    Cool story bro

People were riding trails without suspension for a very long time before front suspensions were common and inexpensive. It's nothing new.

This. Back when I was taking mountain biking 101 at Michigan State, I was riding a Specialized Rockhopper and I definitely couldn't afford the suspension on a student budget. I was pretty envious of the rich kids rocking big Gary Fishers that were all tricked out. Those kids typically drove Jeep Wranglers on their parent's dime.

Honestly, I'd rather ride a bike with a good frame and no suspension than a shitty Wal-Mart bike with a cheap frame and cheap suspension. Everyone gets so hung up on the bells and whistles when it comes to bikes, but a quality frame, crank, and brakes are more important than anything else.

  • When I was 15 years old I rode my 10-speed Schwinn Continental with 7 other high school kids from Detroit to Niagra Falls. No shock absorbers, no helmets, no specialized riding gear. Only one of us ended up with some moderately serious injuries.

  • You could easily ride w/o suspension on trail 100. But ghost you and i both know you're gonna venture onto some better singletrack.... go 29er and full suspension!

Not being really into bicycles, I've always wondered about the big price tags on bikes. If you're not a competitive bicyclist, what exactly does a $1500 bike do for you that a $500 bike wouldn't? Does it have a motor?

dude we shredded that trail... lol... me on the old school non suspension Cannondale. The difference, however, is that I didn't pay $1500 for a heavy mountain bike without suspension... lol... dude I hit Los Reyes de las Tortas the other day, remember we hit that place? LOL

Hey, you still in Phoenix? I got my new bike.

Components. The lower end mountain bikes have shitty components. The fork on my new bike runs about $300. You can buy a low end mountain bike for $500-600.

It was funny I saw some hipster riding a fixie on the trail tonight. I was bullshitting with the guy for a few minutes and I hadn't noticed it was a fixie. I said "dude not as hot as I thought" and he replied "yeah, I'm riding a fixie this shit is tough" and instantly I thought he was an idiot. He was riding at least a $1,000 mountain bike with one gear. Makes no sense.

Sadly no longer in Phoenix. I hope to move back in August, but we'll have to see what the job situation is. Nice bike, looks like you got some solid components. How are you liking it? If I'm back in Phx we need to smash some reyes de la torta, I took some friends there and they freaking loved it. Monsterous sandwiches. I need moar.

lighter, tougher, smoother. Hydraulic vs Disc brakes. more travel in the suspension. etc.

More often it's best left for hardcores or people looking for something that will last. I think it's like swimming - some are happy swimming with boardshorts and goggles. The more hardcore you get into it - you feel the difference when you do mods like shaving/bodysuits. It's about how much time and money you wish to invest and is it worth the results.
