Hollis tweets advice to Trey Burke

    It does seem odd that he would use Twitter in this manner. I personally don't like the fact that our AD is even attempting to interact with other teams' players over the Internet.

    To belabor the obvious:

    When someone posts on Twitter, or Facebook, etc, one is speaking both in reference to a person, and to thousands or millions.

    So the kid cries out in a very public forum, essentially, "Let me make my own choice."

    Hollis advises that the kid listen to his trusted advisers, go with what you and your closest think is best.

    I don't think it is the place for the AD to advise a player at a rival school, but the advice was well intended.

    In a public, social media forum, what you say is intended for the recipient and for the world. However well intended, I would not want the U-M AD, or the Kentucky AD, or whoever, I would not want an AD advising MSU students in public on their future.

  • I also don't think an AD should tweet advice to a student at his own school. There is a recent trend to have prominent people use social media. OK, cool, that is great. I do not think it is the role of an athletic director to advise student athletes via social media - if at all. I don't think the AD should advise students at his own school, let alone others.

    Would you be okay with an AD tweeting advice to a student at his own school though?

    I was an A.D. at the H.S. level and I realize it's Waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy different. However, in my role, I often advised our ahtletes on many things. I thought that was part of my job discription because I was responsible for those athletes and the school that hired me thought I was capable of doing that. I don't know that I'd call another kid and advise him anything from a different school, that might be out of my pay grade. I do agree with your "silent" comment. My goal was to be able to be anonymous at every game. Not needed, a non etity. Just part of the background. That meant everything was going fine.

    One of the roles of the AD most certainly is to advise athletes. Athletic Director. Director of Athletics, which involve the athletes. On a job level he directs the athlete into which way he sees benefits the college the most and on a pure human level he seeks out the best for the athlete. I seriously think had this been a player from, say, Purdue, no one here would have cared and everyone would applaud him for being a stand up guy. But since it's Michigan and they are our "enemy" it's a sin to help them out.

    I agree wholeheartedly. If Trey Burke has any self respect at all he one ups those two jerks and leaves after his freshman year (was Harris a junior when he left?).

Word around the campfire is he threw Hollis under the bus by working his media puppets (planting the infraction seed and making the apology public). My hatred towards UM manifests itself in Brandon. Whether he is calling Delany on his bat phone, working the media or belittling MSU, the guy sucks. Do not underestimate this clown. He is working the BTN, ESPN, the Detroit media and the B1G offices. He is a marketing and PR expert who is desperatley trying to sell UM and their brand, at times at the expense of MSU.

    Funny thing, Hollis is twice the AD and from what I've seen from the both them, 10 times the person.

  • Isn't Michigan one of the top three "brands" in college athletics already? I guess Brandon doesn't want to lose that identity. If I were a Michigan fan I would love him.

    I've picked up on some of this guys position.

    It seems whenever there is a controversial issue about, he is to the first to distance himself from any blame.

    I recall the complaining about not getting 7 (or 8) home games every year as a potential reason to soften up his schedule.

    Then the uniform deal - where they whore the Ronald McDonald suits and he made some comment that the decision was either not his or that is had nothing to do with MSU's Pro Combat package.....to avoid any copycat blame.

    Sorry I can't recall more details or have more time to seach - just know that I have seen the marketing-at-any-expense side come out of him a few times in a short period of time.

    Oh yes, and the hockey game at the big hole was a "we didnt initiate this, they came to us"........to avoid a copycat label.

    He will be a great marketer for UM but not the best standup person.
