Home Brew Crew....Getting Started

  • I searched for a thread like this but nothing came up. I apologize if I missed it.

I want to jump into the world of home brew so I am looking for any tips to get started. I have done a small amount of research online but I figured some of you here would have some good information.

What is a good starter kit? I don't plan on making a large amount to start off, I would like to just make something small to see if this is something I am going to enjoy.

I have found a few websites that sell starter packages, do any of you have any recommendations?

Any information in general will help. Thanks!

  • Starter kits for 5 gallon extract are pretty reasonable. $100 or so IIRC.

Online places like northernbrewer.com are good but look for a local shop to support and as a place to meet other brewers and ask questions.

  • I have found that Midwest Supplies has the most reasonable kits online. I would recommend getting the kit with a plastic fermenting bucket and a carboy. You don't need the one with two carboys though. That kit will have almost anything you need accept for a kettle and bottles. I think Midwest sells a kit with bottles too, but you are better of just beginning to save all of your non twist off bottles or getting donations from friends.

Edit: BTW, there is more discussion in the other general homebrew thread, but good luck finding it. This thread will be good because the question has come up a few times.

  • For a beginner, I might recommend going to a local home brew shop vs. buying online. That way you can talk to someone with some knowledge to help get you started. Where are you located? If in the Lansing area, you could try Michigan Brewing Company out in Webberville. Their home brew shop is called Things Beer. That's where I went when I first started and the guy I spoke with was very helpful.

Looks like there is a place called the Beer Depot at 114 E William St. Or Adventures in Home Brewing at 6071 Jackson RD. Haven't personally been to either, but most places are happy to assist newbs.

Edit: Welcome to your new life as a home brewer. You will get hooked the first time you taste your own brew.

Buddy of mine who lives in Ann Arbor always goes to Adventures in Home Brewing. I know he's been pretty happy with their service.

Cap n Cork in Macomb Twp (21 and Garfield) is the best homebrew shop around. They have everything and are really helpful. There is also Hopman's in Waterford. They are also a good shop. Those are two that I know of that would be closest. None in Rochester that I am aware of.

thumbsup You will enjoy it. Something very gratifying about drinking a good beer that you made yourself.

  • Also, there's a few homebrew clubs in A2 that love new members. Interweb search for some.

  • Northernbrewer has great recipe kits when you get started. Max of $7 shipping costs on their orders too, so if you get a group ofpeople together to order some kits/supplies, you can come out ahead as you don't have to pay tax.
