  • 320lbs and he still looks very lean. If he stays low and uses his technique to avoid the drawback from his height, he's going to be a beast.

I think Hoover can potentially be a very, very good player inside. People forget just how good he was in 2010 when everything seemed to click for him as a junior. Some flat-out dominating performances, and the road win at Northwestern that year really stands out in my mind. Hard to fathom MSU now has a better option at DE in Rush.

Your average UofM fan and I have something in common, neither of us went to UofM. Though we do share One major difference, I got Accepted.

  • Yeah just amazing how MD has built the depth and talent on this team. Hoover could be a dominant force down there alongside ARW and the ferocious DE's running along side them.

  • We could actually run a "Giant" lineup with Gholston and Heath at DE's and Hoover in the middle. Throw over at bitches!

Ummm.. Senior Defensive END Tyler Hoover ?!?!

Mr Kilbridge, I do believe he's moved to the inside of the defensive line this year.

Gotta put LT in the giant package somewhere too. Denard Robinson wouldn't be able to see the sun, let alone his receivers.

My mistake, thanks for pointing that out. Still working out the kinks in fall camp, will be polished and ready to go three weeks from now for the opener against Boise State.

LT could see time in the Delta package this season considering Rush and Gholston are pretty solidified at DE. LB Jamal Lyles has worked there as well and Dantonio seems to find ways to use different guys in 3rd-and-long situations like he did with LB Adam Decker in 2009.

Do you think there is a work ethic issue with LT? I don't want to read too much it, but it does seem like he is always over his target weight. He was always heavier than the staff wanted as a LB, and he's still too heavy even now that he has moved to DE.

Nah, I think he just wanted to play linebacker and the staff didn't want to force him into a DE position. Doesn't look too heavy for DE right now by any means, he carries his weight well.

Yeah I figured it was probably nothing, thanks for the reassurance though. I'm psyched to watch him get on the field this year and tear some people apart.

  • I'm back and forth on Hoover. On one end, he's really tall for a DT, making it hard for him to get good leverage. On the flip side, he's so long that if he uses his hands correctly, the OL is going to really struggle to get their hands on his body, and he can really cause some problems, not to mention the possibility of batting down passes. I think he may have the highest risk/reward factor of any of the defensive starters this year.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Well said, I can absolutely see him knocking down passes all day against scUM, but I can also see a guard getting under his pads and blowing him up on a key goal line stand at some point.

I was encouraged by the number of really tall DTs that went high in the draft this year, I didn't realize there were that many 6'5" defensive tackles out there.

Yea, there's some precedent for him to move to the outside on the goal-line, a la Cameron Heywood at tOSU. JJ Watt did pretty well at 6'6 moving to the inside and outside, and Crick was a beast as a 6'6 DT as well (when healthy). Doug Worthington for tOSU played DT at 6'6 as well.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • I don't know if MSU does this, but why not have Hoover put both hands down instead of just the normal three point stance. Back in high school we had guys who did this, they basically just bear crawled into the line and then trip up the running back as he tried to get by. With that kind of height, if Hoover can just get those arms out, he should be pretty disruptive.

Yep, but he may not opt for it. We'll see after the season.

  • Hopefully Hoover never comes back for his 6th year cause he's a high draft pick and making money in the NFL.

  • It does not appear that Hoover suffers from manticulitis: the inability to be the man.
