As much as I enjoy the occasional coney or Chicago-style dog, plain on a bun with yellow mustard is the standard. And another vote for boiled/steamed.

Grill brats (soaked in beer and onions) char most sausages, but cook my hot dogs in hot, not boiling water. You can put a little heat/grill to them, but do not char my dogs. I like the quarter pound all beef dogs.

Mustard (yellow and deli), then lite with the relish, onion, tomato and like 2 sport peppers.

Have a couple beers and repeat.

My favorite way to cook hotdogs is when I'm camping, poke something sharp into one and hold it over an open flame. Cook it a little bit, then char it up, and put right into a cold hotdog bun, eat.

Grilled with french fries, onion, cheese and ketchup. You gotta throw the bun on the grill too.

I have to agree with this. Dogs at home, I through them on the grill, then a toasted bun with spicy mustard and dill relish.

At the ballpark though, the steamed/boiled dog is tough to beat.

When I was in HS I workd at a fast food joint that sold dogs. If there was a mad rush you could quickly catch up by throwing some dogs on the deep fryer. They actually are really, really good and cook in about one minute. Caveat, if they are in a casing be real careful cause when then skin cracks. grease is gonna fly. Trust me on that. Oh, and mustard and onion is the only way to fly with a steamed bun. Cold buns suck.

And to quote Anthony Bourdain, if you put ketchup on your hot dog, I will kill you.

Boil for 2 minutes, then grill for 5 minutes, toast in indirect heat for 5 minutes, and for the coup de gras...finish off with 5 minutes of steaming.

Koegel Viennas, steamed
Nino Salvaggio's hot dog buns, lightly toasted (seriously the best hot dog/sausage bun I've tried...has a little chew to it)
Plochman's or French's plain yellow mustard (spicy versions are okay if onions are not available)
White onions

Ketchup is only good for two things:
1) French fries
2) Cocktail sauce (heavy on the horseradish)

Grilled is the only way unless I'm at a coney island.

Recently tried a Jersey-style fried dog, flash-fried to make slightly crisp exterior but juicy interior. Was really good.

If you are in Sandusky OH (Cedar Point, etc) hit Hot Dog Tony's...get the fried dog. Great beer selection too.

Yeah I dont get it. Why do you care what I put on my hot dog? Ketchup is excellent. Saurkraut is excellent. Mustard, mayo, relish, cole slaw, chili... I never stick with just one style.
