How confident are you that we will beat UM?

  • VargMan said...

When I watch UM play, it seems that they are involved in unforced bad news bears style games. MSU doesn't play bad news bears style ball. They are disciplined and mature.

After watching last night's game, I am even more confident that MSU will win this game.

U of m's defensive player's don't miss nearly as many assignments as last year. Just watch the MSU vs u of m game from last year and last nights game vs northwestern back to back. That said, we're still better but I hope we cam put up at least 24 points Saturday. Difference might really be special teams. Gun to my head I'd say MSU 27- 24 right now

If we don't put up more than 24, I'll be shocked.

I was a bit shocked or I should say disappointed at how unprepared our o-line was at ND. Hope your right

  • I keep thinking 31-21. I can see them getting a fluke TD too, just not with their special (ed) teams.

  • I see this being an extremely close game. Michigan's defense is vastly improved and the offense is about the same. Michigan played very well against SDSU's pro-style which makes me optimistic. They key to this game is going to be the MSU offensive line. If they can pick up the blitzes and hold their ground against UM's defensive line, MSU should win this game fairly easily. If the line has problems, I see a close game till the end.

What really worries me is the bubble screens. When NW ran them it was an automatic 5-7 yards every time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like MSU also runs a fair amount of bubble screens. As long as Denard doesn't throw three INTs, I think Michigan should have a fair amount of success on offense.

Should be a great game, but I see this one going MSU's way 31-24. I think this is going to be Michigan's toughest game for the whole season.

They certainly did when Treadwell was calling the plays. Roushar seems to have gotten away from it a little bit.

I love when people say uofm has the better d cord. Those are the people that dont realize that he has a career losing record vs MSU.

I am a 7 on us beating them. If we play like we did vs OSU on D and Cousins doesn't make more typical bone head mistakes, we should make it 4 straight.

Oh, you just wait. Mattison's coordination will knock your socks off. Nevermind we actually have the BETTER DEFENSE, Mattison will single handedly be the difference maker in this one.

There is also a difference between a better coordinator and a better defense. We definitely have the better defense. Mattison could possibly be a better coordinator(resume wise he is, but who knows who really is better at this point), but that that doesn't mean nearly as much as having the better defense for next weeks game.

  • I believe it is the 2000 ND game where Heygood catches the game winner. That was a Mattison D, I believe.

We will burn him again and again.

That was and he did blitz on 4th and 11 and the safety who had help on Heygood slipped. It was beautiful. BTW he's learned a few things in ten years I'm thinking

He might have been a d-coordinator in the NFL, but the defense he coordinated instantly got better once he left, and they didn't even really add any playing talent.

are you suicidal? why would you give that low of a margin to a guy with a gun to your head?

It didn't do very well against osu either. Plus the lack of a second go to receiver and cousins throwing two interceptions a game now is cause for concern.

Let's not forget that this Northwestern team lost to Army. NU's defense is absolutely atrocious.

Despite completely gagging (and getting raped by refs) in the 2nd half, Northwestern still managed 438 yards of total offense against this supposedly vastly improved Michigan defense. The key to beating Michigan is actually quite simple- make Denard throw the ball and limit mistakes. As long as we value the football next week, I think we will be just fine.

Isn't that the key to beating msu too? Make cousins throw the ball to bj into tripple coverage?

I really know only one thing about UM's defense coming into this game, they are gonna blitz Cousins. Then blitz again. Then blitz again.

    Now, if MSU had:
    * A veteran OL
    * Cousins was showing an ability to read the defense and react properly
    * Roushar displaying an uncanny ability to stay "one-step-ahead" of the opposing defense

I'd be fine with the blitzing. Keep it coming, and watch MSU chew them up.

    IMO, MSU has:
    * Some veteran OL, but mostly new guys. Wait-n-see if can they pick up blitzes effectively

    * My confidence in Cousins went from a pre-season 9.5 to a current 6.0. Let's hope that with a bye week and a home-game that the real Kirk Cousins will please stand up. And I do agree with your concern, Cousins is keying on BJ.

    * Roushar - Actually, I liked much of the play-calling versus OSU. I fear that MSU will get a lead, then go conservative, allowing UM back in. UM has taken advantage of ND and NW during 2nd halves...

Of the 3 concerns - my largest concern is Cousins. I have a feeling MSU will need some 4th quarter scoring to win this game - Cousins will need to be sharp and mistake free.

That favors UM. We want Cousins (and more importantly, Robinson) to throw.

No Persa on the field this week. Persa is a nightmare to defend as you have to keep contain which opens up some of the screens. Cousins is good but does not force defenses to be as disciplined as a Persa.

  • Fletch, take off the green glasses for a minute.

"Joke" is a bit too harsh now. Say all you want about the excessive hype for Mattison, but it is clear that the defense is actually capable of making adjustments. Did they have some help from a couple Persa mistakes, drops, and refs? Yeah. But they are better.

I still think we win this game by 10. I would pick a blow out if our offense was clicking right now, but it has looked pretty mediocre against our two decent opponents so far this year.
