How effing clueless is Paterno?

  • Spartan8Ball said...

He was brought up in a different time. You guys assume too much. Do you think of male on male rape everyday?

so knowing of it's existence = "thinking about it every day"? lol

Don't make this about you. I don't care.

I didn't say he shouldn't be fired. I said, show him some respect for what he did for 50+ years. The millions of dollars he has donated to help KIDS! His whole life was about kids. He makes one mistake and people jump all over him. Why do you think all these alumni fight for him? They know him better than us.

Sandusky is the peice of shit, not JoePa.

I made my point numerous times. Have a good night.

A "mistake" is coloring outside the lines. Or spilling your beer. What Paterno did is allow a child rapist to continue to prey on young boys for 9 more years and ruin god knows how many lives.

  • Paterno was clueless because he chose to be. I have no doubt that his wife like many wives of that era (she's about 10 years younger) ran the house, the finances and let her husband bury himself in football/fund raising/etc.

As far as his "I told my boss" thing I understand. Don't condone it but that is what you get with a 1950-1960's mindset. We see what happens when you have a what was pretty much an 80 year old despot who just a few years before had as much as dared those same bosses to fire him when they approached Paterno about retiring 3-4 seasons ago.

Now he is an 84 year old guy with a broken hip and lung cancer who is also a former football coach. I do feel sorry for him because in his mind he was focused on "his" program choosing to be oblivious. I'm sure those around him worked hard to keep him oblivious. (That's a common practice with political staffs protecting their US Senator, Congressman or President).

I believe Paterno when he says Sandusky was told he wouldn't be the next PSU HC because Paterno thought Sandusky was unwilling to give the football program the attention it needed. What he wasn't asked was if he felt anyone was qualified to follow him at PSU. Based on the last 15-20 years no one was qualified in Paterno's mind.

Sorry Joe pa but your legacy will always be thus and not the 50 years of bridges you built.

He told his boss, He did what he thought was right. You can't hate on the guy for making one mistake in 55 years.

We must have abunch of perfect people on this message board today.

It's a pretty big mistake and he should be ashamed of himself for his lack of action.

So if you find out someone who works for you is raping children you would simply tell your boss?

And then after nothing happens but a forced retirement and you continue to see this individual around your program/school with children you think "I did my part" and let it be?

And JoePa didn't not do anything to help kids, he coached young adults and clearly did not care about kids based on his handling of this whole Sandusky situation. So he gave money to the university to build a library, does that give him a pass to not reporting atrocious acts on children to someone who would do something about it? I mean, if you don't want the police involved, don't you give the guy a "Don't ever come back or we will call the cops" ultimatum? (which would still be the wrong solution to the problem, but I could see this happening due to their friendship) I used to be a JoePa guy. When this happened, I lost all respect for the man.

This Spartan8Ball better be a schtick

JoPa should have followed up to see what was done about the events.
Sandusky was his friend and colleague that was accused of sex with boys.
Not like it was a trivial accusation.

Sandusky was not a colleague of Joe's in 2002 and I don't think they were very close at all. Seems like Sandusky was much closer socially to the AD and Schultz.

Say you just drop your kid off at daycare and when you leave the guy working there fucks your kid. Another worker sees and tells his boss who then sweeps it under the rug. You continue going there while your kid has to blow the worker and slowly become more reserved and introverted. As an adult, your kid is now psychologically damaged.

What would you think about the workers that didn't do anything? Still innocent?

Spartan8ball, you're likely an 18 year old punk ass. Just look at your Family Guy avatar. Your opinion is dog shit and it's that toxic thinking that has infected this great nation. You are part of the problem.

He looked the other way and allowed it to continue. He did it only to protect himself and the program - nothing more. Now he is trying to keep the only thing he has left (his legacy) from being flushed down the toilet, where it belongs. The idiot actually thinks we are supposed to believe he didn't know what child rape was. Like it's some kind of new fangled phenomenon like the internet.

You're like one of those imbeciles that went to his house when he got canned. You don't seem to fully grasp how despicable his "one mistake" was, and the deplorable acts his "one mistake" directly lead to.

  • Paterno had the authority, and has had it for 40-some years, to have anybody he felt like banned from the Penn State campus, the city of State College, Centre County, probably the state. I mean "banned" as in, "you never set foot in the city again, MFker."

If in 1998 Paterno got word that his long-time trusted assistant Sandusky was raping boys in showers, and Joe Paterno ordered Sandusky to have a slug pumped in his dome and the corpse dumped in Lake Erie, it would have been done within 15 minutes.

Probably everybody would be a lot happier now.

  • Very disappointed in JoePa's explanation.

I had held out some hope through his 2 months of silence that when he finally spoke we might hear something about how he followed up with the AD and VP about what they were doing following their meeting with McQueary and was told by them that it was being investigated, but they couldn't talk about it, etc.

Instead, when finally given the chance, he plays dumb and confused.

So, for 20-some years since Paterno reached retirement age, we've heard constant stories about how in touch and in control he has been of his program, what a tight ship he runs, he doesn't let anything get past him, he runs the cleanest program in college football, etc., "despite his age".

And now he wants us to believe he was just a confused elderly man who didn't know how to handle a difficult situation he stumbled into.

So it is now clear that all this time his PR (and PSU's PR, which he was in control over) was just total, made-up, feel-good BS. He was little more than a cardboard cutout that visitors to his amusement park could pose in front of for their keepsake picture.

    Excellent post. +1

It was incredibly selfish for Paterno to grant that interview when PSU has just hired a new coach who is scrambling to assemble a staff and preserve a recruiting class. I wanted to read about the new coach. Do a Google News search for "Penn State coach" and Paterno and his damn defensive interview dominates still.

Get off the damn stage, Joe.

Your closest assistant coach is under investigation a few months in 1998 for raping a boy a in a shower and he never caught wind of it?

I'm thinking a player wouldn't get a speeding ticket without his knowledge, yet I'm suppose to believe him not knowing about 98??

You don't think there were people on his staff and at PSU that made sure Paterno never heard about that stuff? Many would be that same people who never spoke up the conflict between Sandusk, his foundation and the charges.

Being oblivious took real effort on Paterno's part and also took real effort by those around him to keep him in the dark because Paterno didn't want to know about it.

The speeding tickets and fights directly involved the football team and football program. Paterno wanted to know about that stuff. It affected his football team directly. Go back to when he told Sandusky he wouldn't be considered for the next HC position. It wasn't because of allegations. It was because Paterno felt Sandusky was spending too much time fund raising for his foundation and wouldn't be able to spend enough tme with PSU football.

Judging from Paterno's recent interview, the only way Paterno would have wanted to find out about Sandusky's other activities was if Sandusky would have sexually assualted a player. Then it would have been in Paterno's selected area of concern.

  • Paterno speaks about this situation as if he were only speaking to the Penn State community. For decades, he's been the grandfather to the students and alumni of Penn State, and what he's saying in this article resonates for them. It add to their vision of Paterno, Sandusky, their board, etc. But what happened is not just being viewed in that bubble of State College. And what's clear is that the bubble isn't just a physical one as we see more of this "if you're not Penn State, you wouldn't understand."

Paterno lives, and will die, within that bubble. If you're outside of that group, it's clear that Paterno only added to the problem through a lack of leadership in what's easily the most disturbing story we've seen in college athletics. For Penn Staters, they want to see Paterno as the fall guy, fired by an incompetent board for the failings of Sandusky. This can be talked to death, but whether you're in the bubble or not completely changers how this story is viewed. The word "cult" is too extreme, but it gets close to the point.......
