That was the undoing of the circuit and the Indy 500. It's never been the same. That happened as NASCAR was increasing in popularity nationally. NASCAR soon overtook the Indy car circuit(s) and hasn't looked back. Indy car has toiled in near anonymity since.

One of the sport's best drivers was incinerated on the track within the last year.. Yeah, good quality racing.

Mainly, the CART-Indy spat screwed the sport over, but open wheel racing was kind of a fad that was brought to the forefront by a few high-profile drivers and now that those drivers are gone the sport as a whole has lost a bit of its appeal IMO. I think the last time I ever watched that race was when Tony Stewart did both the Indy 500 and the Coke 600 in the same day.

I thought it was tomorrow. When I get done watching golf this afternoon I may flip over if it is still on.

There's better racing in the 500 than in any Nascar event.

It was going downhill regardless.

I love baseball, but some people don't like it because they think it is boring. I totally understand what they mean, but I love it anyway. I grew up with it. They say there is too much down time and no action.

Now, imagine watching a car gradually turn left for 500 miles.

Watching that last lap you will NEVER convince me that Indy has better racing than Nascar. Its different and its interesting, but in no way is it better.

that looked like one of Sato's F1 races. the guy would drive well, and then make a race-ending mistake. he had 3 more turns to work the leader...

as for winning under caution, it has to do with the improved safety of the cars. in the old days, they knew they would die if they tried something like sato did. same goes for nascar, look at the last laps caution rules to prevent 50% of the races ending under caution. drivers take crazy chances on the last lap, resulting in a yellow flag.

the 60's and 70's, when racing really began to become popular, were dangerous for drivers. over half of F1 drivers eventually died on the track. you want to talk brass balls, drive 200 mph through the woods at nurburgring in a flimsy car surrounded by fuel in rubber bladders in the walls of the cockpit. they didn't wear seat belts because they thought they had a better chance being thrown from the car. i think that had something to do with the rise in popularity. these guys literally put their lives on the line and the thrill and romance of it all was quite a spectacle. now it's corporate-ized, sanitized, and monetized.

Coca Cola 600 will blow it out, just because it's in primetime.

And the ending to that race was a complete sham. Franchitti won the race by crashing Sato. It was a dick thing to do, but he was playing within the rules (i guess?). It's just stupid that as soon as the yellow went out, he had won the race. NASCAR doing the green/white flag ending is way better, as it encourages drivers to not crash people in the last lap.
