When you start looking at houses, you'll be strongly tempted to "buy more house than you need". Don't give in to that. I did - once. We had to sell the house soon after building it. It cost too much payment+taxes when my third child showed up.
Also, look carefully, very carefully, at what taxes you'll be paying. Property taxes are a killer on more expensive homes.

Depends. Do you want to live in a house that makes you strapped for cash or in a house that allows you to drop a couple of grand on vacation without feeling guilty about it? I'd rather be under on the housing budget allowing for more freedom in other things.

We own a house right now, but bought it significantly under what we could have afforded because we were just out of college. We want our next move to be the house we are in long term. Probably won't move for at least 2 years, but we wouldn't mind trying to look into setting up an account for down payment or looking at areas, etc.
I tried a calculator on CNN money, but it gave me a ridiculously high number. Any general rules when trying to decide how much house you can afford?
