I hate Northwestern

    they play MSU like its their Super Bowl every year and then shit the bed after that

    I hope they never make the tourney

    MSU not getting any favors, gonna have to really earn the B10 title

  • They bumbled that game away in the second half. 18 points in the second half of a game you need? No excuse for them and their bubble probably just burst.

    This is my question.

    I'm not knowledgeable on bball strategy so help me out. I thought zone defense was good for keeping the ball out of the paint and forcing teams to play on the perimiter. and that the way to beat a zone was if you have good enough shooters to shoot over the top of it. Why would you try zone vs a team that shoots a ton of threes?

    There 2nd leading scorer Crawford was on the bench most of the 2nd half and OT. NW does not have depth for that margin of error. I do not know if he was hurt or not, but if he wasn't, shame on Carmody for thinking he can knock off a ranked team without him.

  • Northwestern's problem is they don't have the athletes to play defense. It's easy to find some shooters and some guys that can take it to the basket but it is another thing to find guys like that who can also play "D." They've had the same problem since Carmody has been there. They recruit good enough players to get the to the NIT and that is it.

    I don't know if they will ever get a Blue Chipper to go there. Carmody's system worked at Princeton but its not going to work at Northwestern. You gotta have some guys who can play "D."

  • NW's 1-3-1, one guy goes from corner to corner, Michigan just put one shooter in each corner (well one shooter and Novak). No way the back guy in the zone could cover both.

  • When your team (MSU) is the New York Yankees of the Midwest you have to expect the MSU game to be THE GAME on Big Ten home schedule for the rest of the Big Ten.

    Could be why MSU doesn't crack as much come tournament time.

    Because if they manned up Trey Burke wouldve abused them. Considering how Hardaways been shooting this year its not a bad strategy. At times they were getting out on the shooter well, but its hard to do that for 40 minutes. Hell, Michigan only had 49 pts after 40. The issue wasnt perimeter defense... it was their own lack of execution (e.g., turnovers).

  • Didn't read the game thread - was watching the game instead. Jeez, what an abomination. Northwestern played horrible defense almost the entire game - Michigan was open for the three all night. Then they play offense like Wisconsin without the flopping... boring as hell. If that was their gameplan, then the coach is an idiot.

    Agree 100%. The defense wasn't nearly as big an issue for them last night as the horrible offensive execution. They waited until 5 seconds left on the shot clock before they started running a play toward the basket. Turnovers and hurried shots killed them in the second half. Credit scum's defense and Carmody's lack of adjustments to the tight man to man. When dudes are over- playing ball handlers and passes, you've got to go right at the basket. Carmody had a bad night.

    It was just a mistake; I didn't mean to let them take away my soul. Am I too old? Is it too late?

    great points. the last 10 mins of the 1st half NU was attacking more and we saw what happened. and there were many possessions where NU ended up with a poor shot because they waited too long. True too, got to credit UM's defense... they had a lot to do with that.
