I sure don't miss JLS.

I don't mean the day he got here, but over time. Winston wasn't a JLS recruit? The guys who robbed the guy? Beat up the Hockey player? Seems a lot of those guys were recruits of the Janitor.

Winston was most definitely a Dantonio recruit.

Winston was purely a Dantonio recruit. And you're referring to Miles Williams and Hugh D'Imperio, JLS guys.

  • Some folks will never admit that JLS was hired to be Mr. Clean-up.
Some will ever admit how broken MSU football was when JLS was hired. Dantonio had to get the winning thing started when he got here but he didn't have to re-establish order, decorum and cease the lack of order that was MSU football when JLS arrived. Players not wanting to play where needed (Charles Rogers not wanting to return punts and getting away with it was dangerous precedent), weight training optional if you were considered one of the chosen, class optional, study table optional, substance abuse rampant (more than just Smoker).

But 5 universities all got it wrong with JLS? He cleaned up Louisville before MSU hired him.
JLS has a skill set that is great to start a rebuilding program. He didn't understand the jump to Big Ten football and I suspect if he had been hired to do the same job in the SEC, Big12 or PAC10 he would have cleaned up the inernal portions of the program and would have been shown the door just like what happened at MSU.

Then we should have hired someone to not only clean up the program but to improve it and compete with our rivals

  • He's gone. Good bye, good luck. We've got coachd, and he's he best to happen to Spartan football in my lifetime. Not only is he a honorable guy, he's a hell of a coach, a fantastic recruiter, and he's climbed up UM's ass and laid eggs. We have the best pair of football/basketball coaches in American. I pinch myself at night thinking of MSU sports. Best f**king time in history to be a Spartan. thumbsup

You are playing a looking back in hindsight game. The fan base was led to believe by Mason we were going to get a big time hire and we didnt.

GRR is playing revisionist history. By Mr. Clean up standards JLS did a decent job if that is the measure and purpose of the hire.

Dirty little secret was MSU was in such bad shape when JLS was hired no one wanted the job without escape clauses, major money or both. Hindsight is great.

I was surprised by the hire at the time (No as surprised as the Louisville players who found out while their last game with Smith was still being played) and was hopeful he could improve things on the field. That never happened. After 2 years it was clear JLS just didn't "get it" when it came to Big Ten recruiting.

Like we had done before with - altogether now - Nick Saban.

And please don't bring up Robert Newkirk and Billy Greene...those were Perles recruits.

Dmitrius Underwood and Hubert Thompson? OK. Two bad eggs in 5 years isn't bad.

I am not a JLS fan but MD didn't get rid of any of 'JLS's thug recruits'...I don't remember him booting anybody. And there were a few that were already in trouble with the law before September of his first season.

TJ Williams, Sir Darean Adams and Roderick Jennrette come to mind.

Well we did take UM to overtime twice and should have won one of those games. We had OSU down before the horrible kick play before half. And we took it to ND pretty well those years except for the major collapse game. Yes, UM killed us in his final season...but, we were pretty competitive against our toughest rivals. A few breaks and we have a lot to be proud of. Where we failed was winning games we should have won....LaTech, Rutgers, CMU....and a slate of purdue, illini, NW, etc. games....

I'm always shocked how many people seem to still look back on JLS romantically. The man was a fool.

This x100. The man embarrassed our program from top to bottom. Losses to LA Tech, Rutgers and Hawaii, and numerous big-time choke-jobs. "Slapgate", tailspins after good starts to the season, blowouts @ doormats, getting our asses kicked in the B10, recruiting 10 JUCO players a class, not ever firing Smeland, slapping Lamar Woodley the list goes on and on. I'm sure he is a good guy and did clean some stuff up. There was plenty of embarrassing crap he pulled that cost him his job.

MD is a professional, real head coach. There is no comparison.

We were 2-10 combined against UM, ND and OSU under JLS.

We are 8-5 combined against them under MD.

That's "competitive". JLS was a joke.

My comment was in reference to MD coming in and getting rid of JLS's troublemakers right away, which wasn't the case at all. TJ and SirDarean were not booted right away despite being in trouble. Both were given a second chance, didn't work out obviously.

Coach D lost to CMU, not slappy.

yes, and with a couple of breaks we would have been 5-5, which would have been better than we had been the previous 5 years. Just saying - it wasn't a major drop-off and was close to being decent. In the end, glad he's gone and Coach D has become the new kick-ass sheriff in town. But sue me if I recall having hope and excitement in those seasons and games. Of course that was quickly followed by disappointment and anger. frustrated

    I remember that..

Sirderean Adams was da man at MSU. I remember all of his runs..he was the fastest player I have ever seen at MSU. He tore Hawaii and Michigan apart that one year. Unfortunately our defense was so bad that we didn't get the job done.

He was like RichRod, like a fish out of water. The Big Ten was not the right fit for JLS. He didn't know the talent base in Michigan & Ohio and was consistently beaten in the recruiting wars in those states.

Didn't know the talent base? He need directions to get from Lansing to Grand Rapids!
