I urge President Simon NOT to support the new playoff proposal

  • Historically, Big Ten teams do not finish in the top four. If the semi-final sites are rotating among the major bowls, that means there could easily be no BT participant in Pasadena every other year. Frankly, I don't really care what playoff system they come up with, AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T INTERFERE WITH MSU's CHANCES OF GOING TO PASADENA.

I hope President Simon does what's best for MSU and urges the president of NU to vote against this give-away to the $EC.

  • Don't know what she'll do...but I doubt it matters.

While LAKS is pretty intune with Athletics, most University Presidents are not and basically do whatever their AD's want, or in many cases, what the conference commissioner wants. They believe that making athletic decisions are why they hire these people in the first place and really do not like to be bothered with Athletics.

  • So has the B1G caved on everything now. On campus games-gone, Rose Bowl-gone every other year, conference champs as participants-weighted but not sole criteria..

  • now that we have a conference championship game, i think a big ten team will undoubtedly end up in the top 4 barring a major upset in the conference title game.

  • I don't see why it's in any Big Ten institution's interest to vote for this deal. Why couldn't they have come up with a system that excluded the Rose Bowl? What, exactly, is the BT getting out of this?

Do you really think a two loss MSU would have been in the top 4 last year ?

    WBill19542

  • I disagree. While I agree with the tenor of your sentiment, this is a step in the right direction. By your logic, historically Big Ten teams don't finish in the top 2 either. So this gets us closer to a shot to play for a NC, instead of not having any shot at all.

That wouldn't have happened last year.

wrong, the opposite will happen as it gives teams another chance to lose. To be top 4 in the ball licking polls you will need 1 loss or less. As it stands now you will have 2 SEC teams every year and the other 2 spots going to everything else.

Prepare to be disappointing as an undefeated or 1 loss MSU team that wins the BTC gets left out. We don't poll well. Not sure why we would ever sign on to this considering we get 2 of 8 BCS teams right now

Man, too bad polls aren't being used anymore.

  • President Simon will not have a vote.

The Big Tens representative on the NCAAs Presidential Oversight Committee is Harvey Perlman from Nebraska.

Committee Members that will vote on the plan are as follows:

•Scott Cowen - President, Tulane University
•Rev. John Jenkins - President, University of Notre Dame
•Bernie Machen - President, University of Florida
•Max Nikias - President, University of Southern California
•Duane Nellis - President, University of Idaho
•Harvey Perlman - Chancellor, University of Nebraska
•John G. Peters - President, Northern Illinois University
•Bill Powers - President, University of Texas
•James Ramsey - President, University of Louisville
•Gary Ransdell - President, Western Kentucky University
•Charles W. Steger (chair) - President, Virginia Tech
•John Welty - President, Fresno State

The BCS commissioners support a four-team playoff, but the model must be approved by the Presidential Oversight Committee.

let us not forget that the proposed system will choose a top 4 based on a comittee, not just by computer rankings and voting.

How is this not better than the current set up?

If, as you say, we don't poll well and, as an undefeated or 1 loss team, annoy make it into the top 4, why even play with the current set up, as we could never get into the top 2.

This is going to be the best bet, short of an automatic beatty every year for the big ten champion (which will never happen at 4 teams).

The highest Big Ten team in BCS points, before the Bowls was Wisconsin at #10. You think any committee would jump them over 6 teams to a 4th spot.

  • It really makes me wonder what's going on behind closed doors to make delaney fold on this. He's always done what's best for the conference. This is clearly not it.

My opinion is different. Delaney seems to always do whats best for Ohio State and Michigan.

Delaney gets a ton of credit for starting the Big Ten Network, but lets not lose sight of the fact that Delaney made that decision out of spite! It was a casual conversation with ESPN-ABC about renewing the contract and Mark Shapiro threw a lowball offer out there that apparently pissed off Delaney, so he basically was like "Eff it, we will start our own network!"

He got lucky it worked or he would be viewed totally different right now.

That being said, he certainly looks out for the Big Tens two "flagships" and will screw over any other conference team if it is favor of one of his golden gooses.

  • B1G fans should LOVE the new format. It literally couldn't be any better.

    Consider this:

Current system: SEC champ vs. 3rd place SEC team play for the championship in a rematch

New system: A selection committee ranks 4 teams, taking biased media members and coaches out of the loop.

This is a huge, huge win for Delany and the B1G. The only reason the B1G/Pac12 went along with a playoff format is because the BCS went overboard in rewarding the SEC and giving them mulligans. Slive (SEC Commish) is being given credit for pushing for this, but he's a moron for wanting it at this point. His conference was just gifted BOTH slots in the MNC game, and now he wants it changed?

Keep in mind, Slive and SEC ADs said that they would NEVER cave in and allow a selection committee. They LOVE the way the BCS rewards pollster preseason bias, and mulligans for the SEC.

    Wow, are you completely wrong.

What's to prevent two $EC teams being ranked in the top four in the new system? Or three?

So because the SEC played the SEC last year (and the only time 2 teams from the same conference made the BCS title game), that means it was going to happen every year?
